About
Ethically Modified Memes is a parody meme format based on a paper published to Evolutionary Human Sciences that examines race-related memes, but does not show the memes in question, instead showing recreations of the memes that have been "ethically modified" as to not expose readers to racist memes.
The paper was published on June 17th, 2026 and became the subject of attention that month on X after user @sentientist shared examples of the ethically modified memes. This inspired further edits, where users modified racially charged memes to fit the format of the ethically modified memes in the paper.
Origin
On June 17th, 2026, a paper was published in Evolutionary Human Sciences titled, "Memeing Scientific Racism: The Digital Reframing of Racialist Ideologies."[1] The description of the paper reads, "This article examines how racialised memes circulating on X revive scientific racism, demonstrating that hybrid formats reconfigure biological essentialisation within contemporary digital culture."
The paper includes references to racist memes, but does not show the memes themselves. Rather, the paper features "ethically modified" recreations of the memes, as to not expose readers to the racist memes.
On June 19th, X[2] user @sentientist posted the four examples of ethically modified memes from the paper, writing, "A new paper in Evolutionary Human Sciences examines race memes on x but doesn't reproduce the original memes so readers don't have to be exposed to racism when reading a paper about racism. Here are the 'ethically modified' memes," gaining over 12,000 likes and 1,300 reposts in three days.
Spread
X users began making their own ethically modified memes out of offensive, racially charged memes and images over the following days.
On June 20th, 2026, X[3] user @tricknologics posted an ethical edit of the Happy Merchant meme, garnering over 5,400 likes in two days.
Later that day, X[4] user @DalitDetector posted an ethically modified version of the "Iryna Zarutska" stabbing image, garnering over 15,000 likes in two days.
That same day, X[5] user @idealettuce posted an edit of "Pepe the Frog": following the format, that gained over 3,800 likes in two days.
