About
Dunesday is a portmanteau of the words "Dune" and "Doomsday" in reference to the 2026 movies Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Messiah that share the same scheduled release date. Both set to open December 18th, 2026, the event is a direct reference to 2023's Barbenheimer and was inspired by the trend of major dual movie releases with the same premier date, such as Saw Patrol.
News of the shared release date sparked conversation on various social media platforms throughout 2025 and 2026, such as Reddit, X / Twitter and TikTok, as well as the creation of fan material, photoshopped movie posters and memes. While Barbenheimer was more organically formed by the internet, many argued that Dunesday was forced.
Origin
News of the joint release date first surfaced online sometime in late May 2025, with the "Dunesday" name coined around the same timeframe. The exact first use of Dunesday online is unknown, but it saw a notable spike in usage around May 22nd, 2025, when the release dates for both films were confirmed.
One of the earliest known examples of the term appeared that day in a tweet from the X[9] / Twitter account ScreenTime announcing the release dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, with numerous users in the replies using the term. It also began appearing on Reddit[10] the following day.
Usage of the slang and hype surrounding the dual release date for the two highly anticipated movies notably increased again in late 2025 and early 2026 as Dunesday spread online.
On December 29th, 2025, TikTok[1] user @jesus_delacruzz posted a video expressing excitement for the double-feature. The video received about 442,200 views and 95,200 likes in less than three months.

On January 15th, 2026, various news and entertainment publications reported[2] on a Q&A with Timothee Chalamet, moderated by Marvel actor Robert Downey Jr. During the event, Downey remarked that the two had competing movies opening on December 18th, stating, "I’m officially kicking off my Avengers campaign … I just want to let it be known that we’re … we decided because … we both have films opening on December 18th, and we decided to coin it. We’re thinking 'Dunesday.'"
Spread
The reference to and acknowledgement of Dunesday by RDJ and Timothee Chalamet in mid-January 2026 subsequently led to increased awareness of the term in early 2026, including discourse and memes about it.
On January 15th, 2026, the official Fandango TikTok[3] account posted footage from the event, which received about 386,000 views and 36,400 likes in less than three months.

The same day, Redditor DemiFiendRSA posted to the /r/dune[4] subreddit about Downey's Dunesday proposal, stating, "Robert Downey Jr. & Timothée Chalamet Want To Make 'Dunesday' A Thing." The post received 1,500 upvotes and sparked conversation among Redditors, who felt that the Dunesday gimmick was too dissimilar to Barbenheimer to work as a promotion.
The next day, fans of both franchises began posting about their excitement for the event. On January 16th, 2026, TikTok[5] user @valyrethh posted a fancam edit using footage from the event, which received about 579,000 views and 72,800 likes in under three months.
