About

Decearing Egg is a faulty translation of the Japenese letters "えぐえぐえぐえぐえぐ" (Egu egu egu e guegu) discovered by An Odd World of Mine in a video. The nonsensical phrase has led it to become a catchphrase of critique for Google Translates methods.

Origin

The phrase "Decearing Egg" first appeared in the An Odd World of Mine video titled 'えぐ' on April 12th, 2017.[1] The contents of the video depict the user translating 'えぐ' from Japanese to English where the first anomalous result was Decearing Egg after entering the phrase five times. The video has garnered 3,212,302 views as of the 23rd of September, 2017 (shown below).

Spread

The same day, a GIF of the translations in the video was uploaded to Imgur (shown below).

Less than 24 hours after the video was posted, a thread appeared on Reddit's r/videos board regarding the video.[2] Before being closed, it amassed 1275 points (91% upvoted). On June 26th, 2017, Urban Dictionary user Kenoscirneh submitted a definition of "Decearing Egg" to the site's database.[3] On the April 16th, 2017 a thread on languagehat.com about the "Decearing Egg" phrase was made;[4] massing 35 comments as of the 17th of September, 2017. The creator of the An Odd World of Mine channel created a shirt[5] based off the video as well (shown below).
