Tutorial 01 - HSM

My first tutorial and it was suggested that I do it by: jade548_. This tutorial is for the coloring of the majority of my High School Musical icons. It will be done in 15 of steps, I know I lot but I want to be thorough. But I did recreate an icon for show purposes. The program I use it Photoshop 7. Oh if you like what you see, you should friend me, I'll friend you back of course. <3

1 Start with your picture get it down to 100x100 size obviously. I don't sharpen mine unless I feel it needs it, and if I do sharpen it I will later, just not on your main image.

2 Duplicate your background image twice. The one on top put to soft-light the one in the middle put to screen. So it looks like this:
background image copy 2 - set to soft-light
background image copy 1 - set to screen
background image

3 Now desaturate [turn it black and white] the soft-light layer and bring the opacity of that layer down to 50 percent. After this is done you make to Auto Contrast it, it makes the blacks, blacker, the whites, whiter.

4 Depending on the image, if I feel its way too light, I take some edge off the screen layer and bring the opacity down to 90 percent or so. Again if it looks like your subject is too white, then you should bring it down a lot more, it really depends on the subject. But just use your judgment. If you feel the need to sharpen your images do it on the screen layer, but fade the sharpen some.

Layer palette so far looks like this:
background image copy 2 - set to soft-light - desaturate - opacity 50 percent
background image copy 1 - set to screen - opacity enough to take the edge off, not making them too white [for my Adam Icon it was 59 percent]
background image

5 After all that is done you will flatten your image, so make sure you like you image before you do, all though you can go back but it's time consuming. So now you’re left with just one image again.

6 Now you add five new layers, one because you will use them all, and two I like to get them all out before I start.

7 New layer number one: you will add a tan color in the D4BB90 - D0B890 range. It looks like a nice flesh color. Now you will set this layer on multiply, leave the opacity alone for now, until the next layer is done.

8 New layer number two: you will add a nice dark blue layer in the 07122D - 010E2E range. You set this layer to exclusion. Now the whole icon may look a little greenish so this is when you play with the opacity of this layer and the multiply layer. You want the icon to look old and worn, you don't want it to look like your subject is getting ready to hurl. So play with the opacity on both of these layers until you have a nice blend of both colors, making the icon look antique.

Layer palette should look like this:
layer number two - dark blue color - set to exclusion - opacity depending on image
layer number one - tan color - set to multiply - opacity depending on image
background image copy 2 - set to soft-light - desaturate - opacity 50 percent
background image copy 1 - set to screen - opacity enough to take the edge off, not making them too white

9 The next three layers [layers three, four, and five] will all be gradients. With the HSM icons I used a lot of colortone Autumn and Candy gradients, there were others, but mostly Colortone's.

10 Layer number three: pink gradient, set to soft light, opacity to 50 percent. [from colortone's candy gradients]
11 Layer number four: purple/white gradient, set to soft light, opacity to 37 percent [from colortone's candy gradients]
12 Layer number five: ivory/green/teal gradient, set to soft light, opacity to 65 percent [from colortone's candy gradients]

Now there isn't enough color for me so I am going to add a new layer, layer number six. And after much thought I added a seventh layer.

13 Layer number six: light orange/dark orange gradient, set to soft light, opacity to 67 percent [from colortone's autumn gradients]
14 Layer number seven: olive green/mauve, set to soft light, opacity to 35 percent [from colortone's autumn gradients]

Ok I'm done with gradients this is what the layer palette looks like so far:
layer number seven - olive green/mauve - set to soft light - opacity to 35 percent
layer number six - light orange/dark orange gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 67 percent
layer number five - ivory/green/teal gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 65 percent
layer number four - purple/white gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 37 percent
layer number three - pink gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 50 percent
layer number two - dark blue color - set to exclusion - opacity depending on image
layer number one - tan color - set to multiply - opacity depending on image
background image copy 2 - set to soft-light - desaturate - opacity 50 percent
background image copy 1 - set to screen - opacity enough to take the edge off, not making them too white
background image

15 Layer number eight: After all that is done, go down to your background image and duplicate it. Drag it all the way to the top of everything, now you should have the image you started with above everything, and you are not able to see the gradients. You will desaturate the image, and then auto contrast it again. You will then use the brightness/contrast option [all three of these thing: desaturate, auto contrast and brightness/contrast are found in the Image/adjustments section on PS7]. When you use the brightness/contrast you want to contrast it well, this will make the blacks blacker in the image, in this makes the image too white[or bright] you can use the brightness option and lower it making it more gray, which is what I did to my Adam Icon, the same goes for a more gray image, use the brightness option to make it lighter. You will then either set the layer to Overlay or Soft-light, for my image I use overlay, made it brighter.

Layer palette:
layer number eight - duplicated image - desaturated& auto contrasted - brightness = -12 contrast = +16 - set to overlay - opacity 86
layer number seven - olive green/mauve - set to soft light - opacity to 35 percent
layer number six - light orange/dark orange gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 67 percent
layer number five - ivory/green/teal gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 65 percent
layer number four - purple/white gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 37 percent
layer number three - pink gradient - set to soft light - opacity to 50 percent
layer number two - dark blue color - set to exclusion - opacity depending on image
layer number one - tan color - set to multiply - opacity depending on image
background image copy 2 - set to soft-light - desaturate - opacity 50 percent
background image copy 1 - set to screen - opacity enough to take the edge off, not making them too white
background image

And you will come out with this; maybe not exact to the HSM icons, but pretty close I think.

If you want the icon just credit, it's Adam Lamberg from Lizzie McGuire. Feel free to comment about this tutorial, I want to know if it was helpfull, or if there are any questions.
