Since I've been shamed into updating my LJ by catlove, all complaints about the following bit of nonsense should be forwarded to her ;)

So... I haven't got a clue what to talk about, which is why I don't update this thing that often. I don't know how many other people have posts spanning two years on the same LJ page. With me, there's no need to keep skipping pages. Shouldn't you be thankful for that, Pato? I'll never be accused of being a spammer, that's for sure.

I'll refrain from being a typical Brit and talking about the weather, so I'll move onto TV instead since that's something I'm watching far too much of at the moment. Oddly, I find myself watching Celebrity Big Brother - even though I actually can't stand the normal show. There's something strangely reassuring in a "thank God I'm not like that" kind of way about watching these so-called celebs throwing hissy fits over cigarettes, fur coats and being told to remove high heels. And that's just the men.

Anybody else enjoying the Australian Open as much as I am? No? ;) I do love my tennis, as I'm sure everyone around me will attest to. Shame about the time difference though, nothing ever starts earlier than midnight over here so I often end up just catching the first match or two and then taping the rest overnight. I was hoping to catch Mauresmo's match live tonight but, for some inexplicable reason, Eurosport have decided (at the last minute) to start their live coverage over an hour later than usual, so I guess that's not going to happen. Very annoying. Oh well, hopefully they'll at least air Hingis' match later on. It's been great to see her back in action after all that time away from the game. Who would have thought she's still just 25?

So, catlove, there you have it. My monthly post. See you in February ;)

catlove? I'd do your meme, but I can't. I simply suck at picking favourites, plus I tend to only listen to one album at a time until it bugs the crap out of me and I never want to hear it again *g* But I'm updating, so that's something right?

So, since I have nothing much to talk about I'll talk about TV - namely season finales.

CSI: I laughed. And laughed. And laughed. Maybe that makes me an evil bitch, but the faces Nick was pulling were the funniest thing ever.

The OC: Meh. To think I spent hours - days even - downloading these episodes. Don't think I'll even bother with next season unless it's on TV.

Lost: I liked it, but for the first time this season I thought it was less intriguing than...

Alias: Who doesn't want to watch next season now after that ending? It felt like the "old" Alias again. I just hope they follow through with it properly, and not suddenly decide to change the revelation by the time S5 starts.

Desperate Housewives: Never thought I'd love the show as much as I do. Poor Rex. Who knew I'd actually care.

WaT: Still need to sit down and watch it, which I guess says something about my lack of interest this season.

Summer hiatus does suck, especially when you watch way too much American TV. It wouldn't be so bad, but with Doctor Who finishing soon too ::sob:: there's not much else I watch each week. Yes, I need a life but until I get one I'll have to find some new shows to keep me occupied. I've started watching Veronica Mars, which I'm enjoying so far. Only up to episode 3 though, so I guess it can still go all horribly wrong. I can't quite think of who, but Kristen Bell reminds me of someone. And it's not the Smallville chick, because I've never watched that show.

Oh, and cherrycokerocks, darlakane and ficbitch82? We seriously need to get together this weekend and book the hotel rooms, otherwise we'll either be in a dump or an hour the other side of London.

2. Alias - Sydney chili_powda Although Vaughn may have seemed likelier choice for me, there's just something about Sydney - her drive, her determination - that makes her my absolute favourite.

3. Lost - Katecherrycokerocks Well, someone has to like her ;)

4. Dead Like Me - George cantinera The moment she uttered the words "ahh, shit" just before the toilet seat hit her, I knew she'd always be my favourite.

5. CSI - Sara cherrycokerocks and chili_powda I guess Sara is one of the characters I feel some degree of empathy towards, not just because of her past but also the way in which she is treated. She's tough, fabulously snarky and so smart. None of the other characters on the show come even close to my love for this character.

6. Without a Trace - Samantha chili_powda</b> She looks for things in all the wrong places and that endears her to me in a way that I can't explain.

7. The O.C - Summer cherrycokerocks and chili_powda I adore Summer. She has such a wonderfully sarcastic nature that I couldn't help but take to her straight away. She's sweet, sensitive and simply the cutest little thing ever.

8. The West Wing - Donna chili_powda Some characters you love instantly, others slowly sneak up on you as you find yourself liking them more and more. With Donna, it was the latter.

9. ER - Carol catlove If we were talking about a current favourite, I'd have said Abby, but throughout the entire show I'd have to go with Carol.

10. Angel (Okay, so I no longer follow it but I got stuck at #9 and gave up) - Cordy cherrycokerocks The first character I ever really loved on any show. She both made and killed the show for me.

Happy Birthday, ficbitch82! Hope you have a fantabulous day, and lots of drunken LJ posting ;) I can't believe it's been two years already. It's gone by so fast.

So, what else to say? Well, I'm still alive for those wondering where I'd disappeared to. Sorry if I haven't emailed/replied yet. I've not been able to use the PC much recently, so there are loads of messages I still need to work my way through. I'm seriously considering starting a Pharmacy what with all the offers of cheap drugs I've been receiving. I guess with the guaranteed loans and not-at-all fake degrees it should be a piece of cake ;)

Cake, however, is one of the things I've been avoiding today, even if it is for my niece's birthday. I figured I really should make a bit of an effort to lose some weight and, so far anyway, it's been easier than I thought it would be. I've also started going to the gym three times a week, which I've actually enjoyed, aside from the aching muscles. Still, no pain, no gain as they say and since I've lost 12lbs in just over three weeks, it's not something to complain about.

Because I'm a sheep...

So true, even if I do say so myself ;) Does anyone know if there's a new episode of the O.C tonight? I can't see anything about it, but then I do keep away from the forums now as I always get spoiled. Or rather, I spoil myself as I can't keep out the spoiler threads. I hope there is one, although there's so much to download on Thursdays anyway. And Wednesdays now. Or maybe I just watch too many shows - take your pick. It'd be nice if one of the shows was on a Sunday though, especially now that it appears Alias will be airing on Wednesdays too.

Anyway, I finally got hold of a copy of Charisma's pilot, "Like Cats and Dogs". It runs for about 20 minutes in total, which isn't bad. It's pretty funny in parts, although I'm probably being a little too generous since Charisma had the lead role. Not sure if it's the type of show I'd watch without her. She's cute though, and looks great. Nice outfits too. I'd make some clips and screencaps if I could get my computer to actually recognise there's something on the actual disk. Making VHS copies might be an option though. I'll have to try that out.

STORY LINE: The CSI crew follow up on the death of a transsexual, LOLA, and discover an underground world of desperately unhappy people and unscrupulous doctors only to willing to prey on them...

[LOLA] Late 20s to early 30s, a stunning woman with a trace of male features, Lola's an exotic dancer at the Tropicana, who's about to be married to a nice guy, Aaron Laner, when she's discovered murdered in her car on the side of the road. As the facts surrounding Lola's murder are discovered, it's revealed that Lola is a transsexual who had inhabited a sad underground existence before her change and engagement to the unsuspecting Aaron gave her a shot at normalcy. However, upset because she still hadn't healed from her latest surgery, Lola is determined to get the goods on the unlicensed surgeon who did her surgery, and her determination costs her her life.

[MIMOSA] She is mid 20s to early 30s. A gorgeous showgirl. A woman with a trace of male features.

[MERCEDES] A tough chick (preferably Hispanic) with the body of a woman but the face of a man, a denizen of a transvestite hustler bar, she's initially very hostile/aggressive towards Nick and Grissom, but she drops the hustler schtick when she hears they're looking for the butcher operating on transgenders who are turned down by mainstream surgeons. Articulate and angry, Mercedes tells them, "We're not the monsters, trust me," and gives them a name to go after.

[PINK HEADPIECE] Late 20s to early 30s. A man who looks like a woman, this dancer at the Tropicana wearing a pink headpiece talks with Brass and Catherine about Lola. Like the others, she's unfazed by anyone getting surgery of any kind--plastic, transgender, whatever.

[PURPLE HEADPIECE] Late 20s to early 30s. This female dancer in a purple headpiece backstage at the Tropicana talks with Brass and Catherine about Lola. Like the other dancers, she's unfazed by the sex change operations of some of her colleagues.

[BEV] 40s to 50s. A woman who used to be a man. One of Dr. Bower's first successful transgender patients, she's now an instructor at Dr. Bower's lifestyle class for his transitional gender reassignment patients. At a class observed by Grissom and Catherine, she gives some tips on watching out for that tell-tale knuckle hair.

[DINA] This MTF (male to female) gender reassignment patient sits with her fiance, Ed, in therapy. She wonders what to do about their Baptist church, where their pastor doesn't know about her sex change.

[IRV] This angry pre-surgical man in Dr. Lavelle's therapy class rips off his wig, revealing male pattern baldness, a shocking contrast to his stylish plucked eyebrows, sweetheart lips and ample bosom. He's near tears as he complains about his difficult process.

[RASPY TRANNY] This raspy-voiced transsexual/transgender with the body of a woman but the fact of a man at a dive for tranny hustlers has a face that's collapsed into monstrous, asymmetrical bulges due to street level botox injections. He/she claims it gives you good cheekbones, but nothing lasts forever.

It's surprising that when you've prepared yourself that something will suck, you actually like it a lot more than you ever thought you would, or can at least accept it. Of course, this doesn't always hold true - nothing will ever remove the icky feeling caused by the sight of that Connor/Cordy scene, but it's been generally accurate with me.

I didn't hate S5 of the West Wing as much as others appear to. Sure, some things were pretty bad, the dialogue can be lacking, and you spend some time wondering if there'll be some inexplicable helicopter crash or a tank rolling down the street because that's just something Wells would do, but I generally liked it. It's certainly not at the same quality of the earlier seasons, but I wasn't expecting it to be. Maybe when you start with such low expectations, you find yourself surprised. Or maybe I'm just too forgiving, which might be the case, as I was even okay with that WaT scene.

Is it sad that finding a trailer for the Season One DVD set of Murder One makes you happy? ;) It's taken eight years but at least they've finally decide to release the thing. I'm amazed how cheap it is too, for UK standards anyway. Usually they'll try to fleece you when it comes to American TV shows. Shame there's so little on the extras front though.

Sex, Lies and Larvae

The rapport between Grissom and Sara is warm enough to invite questions about their past, but not too cozy to rule out simple friendly attraction. "I don't think Billy and I knew what we were playing at the time," Fox recalls. "There was some tenderness throughout that entire episode...moments of vulnerability that hadn't really been shown before." The scene in the parking lot "was a turning point," says Donahue, "after which the relationship, instead of suggesting itself through chemistry, it would be consciously addressed. We could see that they had a mutual attraction and we knew that Grissom's character being distant, and her character being vulnerable, that of course they'd be drawn together.

Burden of Proof

"Grissom has a marionette-ish control that he used on Sara in a way he doesn't use with anyone else." William Peterson explains. "There's a personal thing with Sara that make it harder for her and more interesting for him." By the same token, however, Sara is uniquely skilled in getting under his skin. "Grissom can't be hurt by Warrick, or even by Catherine. He can be hurt by Sara." Petersen says.

"With a rift opened up between the two characters, Grissom receives counsel from Catherine in the episode's epilogue. "I find it a very interesting scene," says Fink. "I like its sense of the sadness that exists underneath Grissom's life, the loneliness." Of course, Catherine's completely aware of Grissom's pained obsession with Sara and his inability to get past his own fear.

His way of following her advice is to call the florist and to send Sara a peace offering. He sends not flowers, but a plant, and not to her home, but to the office. Donahue comments, "When the woman on the phone says, "What's the sentiment?' the very word sentiment just baffles him. And he could say a million things - 'Take care,' 'I love you' - but he just says 'Grissom.'"

Blood Lust

"The sequence also marks one of the season's few pairings of Sara and Grissom. "There's an intimacy between the two of them on this show that I think is very pleasant," says Jorja Fox. "What I loved about that show is that it brought back some of that closeness from season two; when it's about the work, they can finish each others' thoughts." Berman concurs, "The personal stuff sometimes gets between them, but when you have a dead boy, they throw out all the baggage and bring to the job all their attention and focus."

Playing with Fire

Petersen and Fox were opposed to the script's original indication that Grissom would turn her down decisively and for good. "I said, 'you can't do that. We have chemistry together,'" Petersen recollects. "We have so little interaction between the characters as it is." Grissom gently turns her down but not without expressing some ambivalence, both in his words and in his actions' he stands outside his office, pauses, and then appears to walk in her direction. Shankar agrees with Fox's and Petersen's take on the situation, "When you work with somebody and you have feelings for them, you can't just end it; it's not possible. It was really about bad timing. Grissom is sitting there worried that he's going to go deaf, and she's coming here and saying, 'Hey, let's get together,' and he's kind of saying, 'I can't deal with this right now.' There is some value in keeping that door open just a little bit."

This week has been pretty quiet, with my time spent between catching up on numerous DVDs (Spooks, the West Wing etc) and trying to find a job that I'll enjoy and will fit in with my plans. The one thing I liked the sound of turns out to be in a smoking environment and I can't stand smelling like an ashtray. That, and I don't fancy inhaling smoke for hours on end for just a few quid. I'm not in a rush to find something though so I can be pretty choosy about it.

Our new neighbours invited us to their son's Christening this week which is not exactly interesting unless you consider the fact that they'll be giving their child fifty godparents (heh, I was bored enough that I actually counted the names on the list. I clearly need a life) It'd be worth going for just the amusement value alone to see how they'll manage to fit everyone up near the front of the church.
