- Ecuador had 16 shots on target without scoring in their opening two games of the tournament.
Germany are looking to earn a share of national team history as they round out their Group E fixtures at World Cup 2026 against Ecuador at New York New Jersey Stadium on Thursday.
Die Nationalelf are already guaranteed to top the group having followed up an opening 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao with a last-gasp 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side were far from convincing against the Elephants, and were trailing at half-time thanks to Franck Kessié’s 30th-minute opener.
But substitute Deniz Undav proved to be the hero, levelling things up in the 68th minute, before coolly placing home a 94th-minute winner to secure safe passage through to the knockout rounds.
As such, Nagelsmann may ponder resting a few regulars as they complete their group obligations, but he has the chance to help Germany secure a record-equalling 12th straight win in all competitions.
They previously achieved such a stretch of wins between May 1979 and June 1980, and are quietly building momentum as they look to win a fifth World Cup.
Undav has three goals for the tournament, all coming off the bench for Germany, and is averaging a goal or assist every 11 minutes at the World Cup, with his three goals and two assists coming from just 56 minutes of action.
No player has ever scored in their first three appearances at the World Cup as a substitute, while the only German players to score in their first three overall are Gerd Müller in 1970 and Miroslav Klose in 2002.
Having won their opening two games, Germany are looking to win all of their matches in a group stage at the World Cup for the fourth time, doing so previously in 1970, 1974 (second group stage), and 2006.
Ecuador’s last-32 hopes are hanging firmly in the balance, with Sebastián Beccacece’s men having followed up a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast with a drab goalless draw against Curaçao.
It means they will need to earn a first-ever win over Germany to progress to the knockout stages, and the omens are not looking particularly good.
Ecuador have failed to score in both of their World Cup 2026 games so far, and the only CONMEBOL team to go through an entire World Cup tournament without scoring is Bolivia, in both 1930 (two games) and 1950 (one game).
La Tricolor have had 16 shots on target without scoring in their opening two games of the tournament. On record between 1966 and 2022, the most shots on target a team had without finding the net once in a single tournament was 18 by then-reigning champions France in 2002.
Veteran forward Enner Valencia could make history for his country in this game. If he plays in this match, he will become Ecuador’s record appearance holder at the World Cup, overtaking Édison Méndez.
He scored three goals from eight shots in 2014 and three from nine shots in 2022, but has had eight shots without scoring in 2026.
Ecuador vs Germany Head-to-Head
Germany have emerged triumphant on their previous two encounters with Ecuador, which includes a 3-0 victory in the group stage at their home World Cup in 2006.
Their other victory was a 4-2 friendly win in May 2013, a match that coincidentally also took place in the USA, in Boca Raton, Florida.
Moreover, Germany remain unbeaten across their 10 World Cup group-stage fixtures against nations from South America (W7, D3), conceding just five goals in those matches.
For Ecuador, since beating Portugal 3-2 in February 2013, they are winless in their last nine encounters with European opposition (D5, L4). However, three of the previous four games have been drawn, including most recently in March of this year when they drew 1-1 with Netherlands.
Ecuador vs Germany Prediction
Germany are considered slight favourites by the Opta supercomputer to make it three group-stage wins from three.
Their chances are rated at 48.8 per cent, with Ecuador’s win probability at 28.2 per cent, and the draw a 23.0 per cent shot.
