Ages ago, turlough won my help_pakistan auction. I was ridiculously stoked to work on it (old school fandoms! then-brand-new MCR! GUNDAM WING.), but life conspired such that I wasn't able to actually finish until recently. But Killjoys need no apologies! Nor do Gundams!

Oh boy, sorry I've been MIA for so long! renquise and I actually moved to New Zealand in the past month (you know, as you do), so things have been all a'flurry. We were sans internet for a few weeks there, so now that we're connected again, I've been soaking up Inception like a crazed sponge.

My gosh, I leave the internet for a bit, and suddenly I am behind on everything!

Real life: I finished up work! By the end, I was started to get a bit frayed, so while I will miss the rather nice paychecks, I am looking forward to a little bit of time to myself. Also, as of this weekend, I am graduated from university! To be honest, I am surprised by how nice the whole thing was. I didn't expect to be so moved by all of the ritual, but there were some very nice things said and done. Graduation was balanced out by a certain bittersweetness as all of my friends were leaving town for places unknown. My roommate has moved out, and there's literally a giant hole where her things once were. It is Very Strange. I did manage to drive a few friends to the airport and see them off, but it's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that I will not see them for quite some time.

Fannish things: I haven't had any time to look at BBB stuff, but my fanart was posted for Cadesa's Caress by the excellent figilio_vampire. A story about storytelling! Worlds colliding! Some of my pushbutton fic kinks! :Db

So now that I'm just sitting around for a bit, I'm looking for things to do. My current list includes:

+ Clean my room, or at least make the roomie-shaped hole slightly less conspicuous
+ Finish my little skater dude
+ Write up a commissions post and see if anyone is interested. (Alternately, spend the time making indulgent little dudes and see if anyone wants to take them out of my hands.)
+ Learn to bookbind(???). One of my crew works at a well known paper store and she says she'll teach me how. I'm excited about this. :D
+ Get ready to PACK.

+ Gundam Wing fans! Did you know that Shinigami.org is saved on the Wayback Machine? Amazing! Also, do you remember that Heero is Not Toast? To this day, when I open up a new tab, I sometimes find myself typing in "GWA" because I checked that site near daily for a quarter of my life!

+ Did you know that Death Note is currently the 25th most popular fandom on Fanfiction.net? *waves cane*

+ Remember how dreamy Tamahome was? And what was up with Chichiri, no da? (True fact, up until about five minutes ago, I was calling him Chihiro, but I'm pretty sure that's the kid from Spirited Away.)

+ Who thought that House of Kittens was a good name for the florist front of four assassins?

+ And I KNOW that someone, years and years ago, sent me this Escaflowne AMV set to Apocalyptica. (Which, if you haven't seen it, you should. Instrumental badassery! Mecha! Granted, it's also the movie, but that is okay!)

And in a slightly less dated point, I am re-obsessed with Saiyuki manga. Rather than post the lengthy essay I am in the middle of thinking my way through, here are links to places where you can read it!

+ Gensomaden Saiyuki, the start of the series, is available up over at OneManga. Introduces the Sanzo Ikkou and their wacky hijinks while traveling west. It starts off as pretty standard shounen fare, but once it finds its feet, it becomes absolutely heart wrenching. Beautiful art and really strong characterization.

+ Saiyuki Gaiden, the prequel that takes place 500 years before the current story arcs, has since been completed (and apparently greenlit for an OVA) and the scanlations are available over at MangaFox. I am entirely unable to articulate how much I love Gaiden and how successful I think it is, both as a standalone series and as a precursor to the current story. (Also, I nearly cried.)

+ Saiyuki Reload, which directly follows Gensomaden Saiyuki, is also available on MangaFox. Reload is less episodic and, I would argue, works a much vaster scope. If I have my chronology correct, Minekura had put Gaiden on hiatus for a bit, but she started it up again at about the same time as Reload. Not surprisingly, the two storylines build on each other and make for a wonderfully realized universe. Relatedly, renquise pointed out that the Burial arc was made into an incredibly faithful OVA and has been fansubbed. (We ended up watching it in the late night hours, absolutely felled by glee.)

If that wasn't enough, Minekura has also started up the sequel to Reload - Saiyuki Reload Blast - in which the Sanzo ikkou make it to India. She's also started up Saiyuki Ibun, a story about Koumyou, our grumpy Sanzo's mentor. Those are both available at OneManga.

And, finally, here's an interview with Minekura, which is a fascinating look into how she ended up doing Saiyuki and how the storylines have fallen into place.

So I offered a little dude or dudette for help_haiti, and I was lucky enough to receive a request by bluelittlepig. bluelittlepig, for those of you not in the know, is actually insanely talented, so it was a lot of fun to try and make something exciting. Unfortunately, Luna apparently got a bit busted up in the mail, but I did have my friend take photos of her before I mailed her out.

(An aside: I have no idea what magic occurs in cameras, but he transformed a chair and a piece of posterboard into something really awesome. I got the photos back and was embarrassingly wowwed. How do cameras make things look so awesome?)

Also, I couldn't figure out a way to make a good panaround without losing detail, so I made a jerky gif of the photos I have. Behold, my technological prowess:

If you're interested, I've also uploaded two different angles: front view, side view.

A few notes:

+ The cloak is a deep midnight blue. In the lighting I was working under it looked exactly as I had intended, but in most indoor lighting - and in these photos - it looks black. It's not!
+ The eyes of the bird glow in the dark. (Fun fact: the Ravenclaw mascot is actually an eagle.)
+ The creature in her hand is a baby questing beast. It is also removable. (And don't read into the symbolism there. I went through several creatures before finally settling on something recognizable and, more importantly, feasible.)
+ She is actually wearing tiny radish earrings and a butterbeer cork necklace.

I didn't measure her, but if I recall correctly, she's about eight inches high from top to bottom.

I tried a few new things, so once RL stops being heinous, I'll post something about the progress of it. :D

I was trawling the interwebs and came across this absolutely gorgeous SPN vid, Nowhere to Stop.

I haven't watched SPN regularly in years so I am missing some nuances, but the vid is still incredibly haunting and matches the song -- "Anywhere on this Road" by Lhasa de Sela -- perfectly. Ugh. I still have the chills.

As I alluded to in a previous post, theopteryx organized a contest for the end of thegaystarfish and she asked me to make a little Frank and Gerard as a prize. The contest has ended (the rules were up HERE and the winning entries were posted over HERE. Check them out! They are hilarious!), so I am posting pictures of the little guys!

Contributing to my excitement: One of my friends took the photos with his swank camera. Super cool!

These guys were pretty straightforward, so no major notes. Although as an extra bonus picture, my friend happened to catch a picture as I was turning Gerard, and I think it's kind of funny/interesting. And gives you a sense of how small these guys are. :D

+ This seasons stacking ring on Etsy. I am a total sucker for stacking rings, and these are SO CUTE. Unfortunately also out of my price range. (That does not stop me from keeping it open in my tabs and sighing about it. Or from browsing Etsy and purchasing truly bizarre items instead. Why did I think I needed 20 tiny plastic tophats? I honestly don't recall. I got the compasses because I've been wanting them, but pipe charms? Really? What on earth is on this invoice?)

+ SHATNER! A truly phenomenal article in GQ about the one and only William Shatner. Allow me to c&p the first paragraph:

My God, the bracing and embracing enthusiasm that is SHATNER! The music it makes, the staccatos and sforzandi and delirious swings of tempo and motif! Behold, now, Shatner, jamming, deep into a riff about the human palate (though the subject could be anything), the worlds open to it, and the worlds it can open: "For me, for me, you can't go too far pushing for MORE coffee taste. There were points where I was sitting there at work, hand pressed against my face to keep from giggling too loudly. (The last page? Amazing.)

+ Parov Stelar's "Shine" ft Lilya Bloom. This music video has been stuck in my head for the past week, and I love it. Visually, I really like the high contrast and the offkilter framing, the quick cuts. (And a flapper and typewriter! Typewriters!) Aurally, I just, uh, like it. A lot.

+ I am a few days away from no longer being eligible to work at the concert hall, and I am being thrown a pizza party. I was a bit taken aback by that at first, but now it's become quite charming. And I hear we're getting Lou Malnati's. Yum.

+ Lastly, I am facing down a ton of deadlines, but I am slowly chipping away at them. Productivity is helped by the fact that both of my roommates are out of town and I am free to walk around sans pants.

(Actual lastly: I was dogsitting for a friend last week while painting up a storm, and I watched a ton of movies, including eXistenZ. I liked it despite having been spoiled for the ending by an ill-timed channel surf about nine years ago, but I just want to point out that it has the WEIRDEST CAST of any movie ever. Seriously, look it up. Watson, Bilbo, Agent Smecker, Darren Nichols, RayK the Cylon, and the Doctor walk into a virtual bar...)

+ SLINGS AND ARROWS. I watched the first season last night and completely fell in love. The six-episode season format allowed just enough room to develop storylines and character and amazingness without bogging down the tension, and the season finale is perfection. Anyone who has the slightest interest in theater, Shakespeare, or, you know, sunshine and puppies should watch this!

+ DUE SOUTH. I am on a wild Paul Gross kick someone stop me (but actually please don't). I've read a ton of dS fic (see also: thefourthvine's awesome feel-good recs) but haven't gotten around to watching very many episodes. I am happy to report that the canon is even more delightful! Also, renquise has heard me say this many times in many variations, but oh my god, Paul Gross looks astonishingly like younger Gerard Way from certain angles. It is very weird. GERARD, WERE MUSIC AND COMICS NOT ENOUGH?

+ Like Sailing and Home Runs. This is a Sports Night fic off of the Wayback Machine, but I remember first reading it and reaching the ending and just sighing because everything built up so perfectly to that end. This was the story that made me understand how braiding story and frame could create such exquisite tension. (And while I'm at it, I always have to pair this one and Get Loved, Make More, Try To Stay Alive by Dira Sudis, because they both punched me in the chest while reading. Sometimes I find myself reading the section about Ianto and time - I think you know which part I mean, the one at the very end - just because it is so gorgeous.)

+ Flipbook Parkour. SO COOL!

[ETA: + Sherlock Holmes Soundtrack. I love that the titles sound like Holmes-as-interpreted-by-old-school-Panic! Rolicking strings and out-of-tune piano! Hans Zimmer, here: "Yeah. We rented 20th Century Fox’s underground car park one Sunday and did hideous things to a piano." 8DDDDD ]

Things that do not bring me joy:

+ Incredibly entitled concert patrons. One woman called in and reduced one of my minions to tears because she claimed she didn't have enough time to hear the answer to a question that she asked. When my girl finally got off the phone after half an hour of diatribe, she gave me the woman's name and I recognized it as the same woman who calls every year to bitch out the staff. What possesses a person to be so heinous? DON'T LET THAT BE YOU.

+ Working a consignment concert tonight. No offense, patrons, but I am tired of you today!

A trip down memory lane

Classes start up again tomorrow and I am doing the mental equivalent of dragging my heels and going no no no! There are few things in life I would like to do less than get back to work on my thesis. (Unfortunately, other unavoidable items on the list include going to the DMV to renew my license and buying a parking sticker from the Civic Center. Urg. Arg.)

Whining aside, reflectedeve did this amazing six-year fanart retrospective, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. You can see the trajectory of her style! There's so much personality in each of the images! alksdfklahglkasdf. So cool!

Since I really like hearing about other people's backgrounds and seeing how their stuff has evolved, I thought it would be neat to do it myself.

I've been on a general creative version of writer's block, and one of the things that I've been banging my head against has been this little dude. He was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my dad, but for a variety of reasons I just could not paint him in time. That's not worth going into, but I'm exorcising at least his unpainted self to the internet.

I took these photos while I was trying to figure out the position of his arms/hands/drumsticks around the janggu, so there've been some changes made. He has hands, for one. :D

Here's to hoping he'll be completely done by New Year's!
