11:00 am - *crickets*
|
I'm still around! LJ and my days of binging on fanfiction seem a long time ago. I feel like I've moved out of a "fanfiction" phase that started in my teens. Since 2012, I went through a year of not reading very much, and now I'm back to reading a couple books a month. Progress! Basically my entire LJ presence now is just to buy BPAL decants. I don't buy bottles of perfume much anymore (because I have dozens). But I love sampling the stuff!
What have I been up to? I got married with minimum fuss a few months ago. I don't feel like an adult yet, but maybe I will by age 40? I nixed basically everything in a traditional wedding, but I was wearing a fancy dress and we ate cake. Chocolate cake. mmmm.

I hope I still feel that way next year.

10:17 am - I'm back!
|
Wow, a year since I updated. What's changed?
-finally escaped the roommate from hell -moved to a new apartment and found a roommate I'm actually friends with -discovered an interest in (reasonably comfortable) fashion . This is big - I've dressed badly for most of my life. -going to Europe next month! -battled with depression a bit -been out of fandom a bit. I've not read much fanfiction lately (oh no!)
What hasn't? -same job, same boyfriend -still obsessed with BPAL perfumes (major money suck, but so much fun). -still geeky in a fandom/scifi/fantasy way and a linguistics way (language+me = OTP). -still don't know what I want to be when I grow up ;)

10:45 pm - BPAL update
|
|
So, I've spent lots of money on BPAL perfumes this year. Lots and lots. It's small amounts, but it adds up. It's an addictive hobby (perfume sniffing and collecting can be a hobby, did you know?). I have acquired enough bottles to keep me smelling damn good every year for the rest of my life + 5-10 years into the afterlife. I NEED HELP. . . . .

Greenwashing (n.)
When significantly more money or time has been spent advertising being green (that is, operating with consideration for the environment), rather than spending resources on environmentally sound practices. This is often portrayed by changing the name or label of a product, to give the feeling of nature, for example putting an image of a forest on a bottle of harmful chemicals. Environmentalists often use greenwashing to describe the actions of energy companies, which are traditionally the largest polluters.

8:51 pm - Pimpin' the good stuff
|
I was introduced to Manna's The Administration series a few years ago. It is well-written, engrossing fiction, and includes such things as "sex, food, torture, conspiracy and family gatherings!"
And. . . .Manna has finally gotten the first story, "Mindfuck" released in print through Caspian Books
I heartily recommend getting a copy, to support an awesome writer. She has very graciously allowed her fiction to remain on the web, completely free, even though part of it (the first of many?) is now for sale on amazon.
So, yes, you don't need to buy the book to read "Mindfuck", but think about having all that goodness in paperback form!

2:39 pm - Weak!
|
Ok, so I broke down and ordered some BPAL perfumes. I'm so weak! I justify it by arguing that the wait time seems to be about a month (hand mixed perfume oils, you know. they take time), so I need to order NOW to get them before xmas. And if one of them works out, I'll give it to my mom or something. maybe. If I can pry it out of my hands. . . .
Anyway, I'm just lame.

6:50 pm - OMG! BPAL!
|
I've just discovered the joy that is The Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's webpage. They make a gazillion types of perfume oil, and they have very creepy/cool/literary names and descriptions (like "Embalming Fluid", "Tweedle Dee", "Ode on Melancholy").
I haven't bought any yet, even though they're cheap. I'm rapidly becoming addicted to reading reviews on their fan's message board, and I think I need to stop already. If I get obsessive and hype myself up too much I'm going to be way disappointed when I actually get my hands on the stuff. And I need to keep an eye on my money and not splurge right now.
I've decided that I'm going to make myself wait til new years to order some. But it's HARD. . . I keep trying to talk myself into doing it TODAY.

8:57 pm - Not quite satisfying . . .
|
Do you ever read fanfic that has a really good premise, but is really badly executed? And keep reading, through all the bad stuff, just because there's some redeemable quality there?
There are fic that have a great idea, but the author does a horrible job writing it, either because they suck or because they're young or because it's their first fanfic. I'll read the story anyway because I'm too intrigued by the idea of it to mind the florid, melodramatic dialogue or prose; I'll skip whole sections and I wince at certain lines, but I keep reading because I just wanna see the idea written out. But in the end it's frustrating because the story could be so much more.
It makes me wish I had some talent at writing (which I really, really don't) just so I could do justice to some of these wonderful plot bunnies.

3:50 pm - Star Wars Geek-ery
|
I just watched "Empire strikes back" and "Return of the Jedi" on TV. I had forgotten how good they were. They're actually worth re-watching. Or maybe I'm just nostalgic.
What was George Lucas thinking with the newer Star Wars prequels? The old, 1970s ones have soul, but cheesy special effects. The new ones seem to have killer special effects, but no soul.

3:41 pm - I want HP spoilers.

Harry Potter #7 comes out in three days (um, or something like that). And I really could care less. You see, I grew out of Harry Potter before/around book 5 and I just keep up on what's going on through SparkNotes so I can have half-way decent conversations with friends.
( thoughts, but nothing remotely spoiler-yCollapse )

12:51 am - Goats
|
Apparently, you can rent a goat. You know, instead of buying a lawnmower. . . .
"UW Bothell stopped using herbicides to kill weeds on campus about a year ago, says Tony Guerrero, director of facilities for the campus, and so the weeds have been flourishing. To battle them, he hired goats from the Vashon Island-based service Rent-a-Ruminant. About 60 goats in all were used to graze blackberry bushes from the grounds from last Wednesday through Tuesday. Guerrero said there's also some talk of keeping some goats permanently at the UW Bothell some day. No special permit was needed from the city for the use of the ranging ruminants."

11:29 pm - Procrastination strategies, pt. 1
|
Why is it that every quarter I come up with a new fandom obsession right around finals week? This quarter, it's Supernatural. I saw, like, the first two episodes of the show and never watched it again. And now I'm reading everything Wincest I can get my hands on (It's so great, it's like a more lighthearted version of Boondock Saints brother!slash).
I know I'm avoiding the fact that I need to study (starting, like, yesterday), but I just can't get motivated. Term paper, take home finals, actual exams? Who needs em'? I've got some fanfic recs to check out. . . .

12:31 am - A linguist is NOT . . .
|
A Linguist is emphatically NOT:
-A language specialist. . . -Someone who can speak a language -Or two languages -Or a foreign lanaguage -Or someone who can speak Arabic, Japanese, Pashto, Hindi, or
I've been perusing job ads the last couple days, and it seems like half of them take the word 'linguist' to mean someone who is fluent in a foreign language and can do translation. This is stupid. If you want an Arabic translator, a German translator, or a Yoruba translator, then it makes a lot more sense to put that in the title than just 'linguist wanted'.
Linguists are generalists, who can study cross-linguistic patterns, language trends and tendencies. Linguists are not always fluent in Japanese, or Arabic or some commercially profitable language.
(Actually, people might argue with me about definitions. There are two senses to the word linguist. One studies one language in depth, and one studies a breadth of languages, but dammit, I like mine better.)
