CHARACTER INFO
Name: Cheshire Cat
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Point taken from canon: Beginning of Chapter 21 right after Break kills him
Age: Human form looks around 17, technically over 100 because he was originally a cat from 100 years ago… but let’s just go with 17.
Gender: Male
Appearance:

As a Chain, Cheshire is given a human body that looks like a teenage boy with spiky/fuzzy black hair, parted at the bangs so that it covers his right eye. Since he is also part cat, he has cat ears on his head with black fur that sort of blend with his hair. His only visible eye (left) is red, and was previously Xerxes Break’s. He is 173 cm or 5’8”. His tail is black, thin, and furry like any other cat’s tail with a white tip.
In the series, he is only seen wearing black clothing and black everything (except the ribbon and bells), though they also have a bit of a red hue to them. He has a veeeeerrry long scarf that wounds around his shoulders/upper arms. The ends of said scarf has large gold bells attached and are draped downwards behind him. Cheshire also wears a sleeveless collared shirt with two vertical white stripes decorated with “x”-es; the bottom of his shirt is jagged. For his hands/paws, they take form of long gloves, also lined with “x”-es, that reach up to his upper arms with the “fingers” as immensely large and sharp claws that can cut almost anything. The pants that Cheshire wears resemble some sort of tights that seem to be connected to his shoes; the shoes are pointed as similar to elves’ shoes.
Around the collar of his shirt is tied a red ribbon with a small gold bell in front that he is given to protect. The bell contains Alice’s worst memories of 100 years ago and was destroyed by Break. Since the point I’ll be taking Cheshire from is after Break took the bell, Cheshire wouldn’t have it.
Background: (http://pandorahearts.wikia.com/wiki/Cheshire)
The wiki pretty much covered most of the general information since Cheshire is not a major character and only appeared a couple of times. But just for clarification, I’ll summarize Cheshire’s background a bit.
I guess I’ll start with what happened to him 100 years ago in Sabrie aka the capital of the country the story takes place in. Cheshire was Alice’s pet black cat and only friend since she was locked in a tower by Glen Baskerville. At that time, Cheshire was like any other cat and as loyal as a beloved pet. But according to Jack, Cheshire occasionally showed different behavior towards Alice due to her alternating personality. Sometimes, Cheshire appeared to give a lot of affection to her and other times he kept his distance or hissed at her. This was due to the switching of souls of twin Alices within one body. But regardless of the changing Alice, he remained at her side.
Later in the story, Cheshire was kidnapped and had his eyes gouged out with scissors by Vincent; it was Vincent’s way of bullying Alice. After he died (from blood loss, I guess), Cheshire’s soul was then somehow sent into the Abyss and he was able to continue to live with Alice’s other half/twin ‘Alice’ known as the Will of the Abyss (for the sake of sanity I’ll just call her the Will). He was given a human form and it made him feel even closer to the Will, but Cheshire continued to refer to himself as a cat. His eyes, however, were unable to recover, so at this time they were covered with bandages. Even though he is a Chain, he was special. Unlike other Chains, Cheshire does not require a contractor. After all, his greatest wish was to be at the Will’s side so staying in the Abyss is no problem for him.
Eventually, Kevin Regnard (or Break) was pulled into the lowest level of the Abyss, where Cheshire and the Will met him. The Will violently killed Kevin’s Chain, Albus, out of anger for interrupting her while she was talking to Kevin and danced with Cheshire in the rain of blood. She later remembered why she had Kevin brought to her…..
And she gouged out Kevin’s left eye with her fingers.
She wanted to give Cheshire his vision back using Kevin’s eyes, as she thought “red eyes suit Cheshire the most”. However, she was unable to take Kevin’s remaining right eye, for the moment was interrupted by Sabrie being pulled into the Abyss and Vincent suddenly appearing. Since the time is messed up in the Abyss, the Tragedy which had occurred 100 years ago had overlapped with Kevin’s event of being dragged into the Abyss, which had occurred 50 years ago ( yeah confusing).
Time skipping a bit: The chamber that they were in crumbled because of the overwhelming anger of the Will after Vincent ‘bullied’ her. There is no information of what happened to Alyss and Cheshire after that whereas Vincent and Kevin were brought back to their world.
Several years later, Break, previously Kevin, and Alice (B-Rabbit) were taken into Cheshire’s domain (http://www.mangareader.net/350-24644-5/pandora-hearts/chapter-15.html). This new home of Cheshire’s was built from Alice’s memories of 100 years ago and it mainly contained the memories Alice wanted to erase the most.
Cheshire had wanted to only capture Alice to kill her, and Break used Alice as bait to enter the dimension as well. Why would Cheshire kill the one person he’s loves? Well, since Alice was searching for her memories (which caused her so much pain that made her got rid of them in the first place), Cheshire came to the conclusion that to stop Alice from hurting herself (and the Will) was to kill her. However, unable to do it himself, he left the dimension to do it for him.
It was later revealed during Cheshire’s fight with Break that the bell tied around Cheshire’s neck contained Alice’s memory of the Tragedy and her death. Desperate to get rid of all the intruders (Oz and Gil had entered to save Alice in between all of this) in the dimension, Cheshire lost it and disposed his human form, attempting to destroy everyone in the dimension by bringing them down with it. However, it was futile as Break killed Cheshire by using Mad Hatter’s power and cut him in half.
Personality:
Cheshire’s personality is pretty straightforward, as straightforward as a cat’s personality can get.
Although Cheshire has a human form, he tells others that he is a cat and always will be one. In fact, he acts like one as well. Such as when Cheshire was attacking Oz, he refers to it as “playing” and eventually he gets bored and decides to kill him off. This is the same as a cat playing with a mouse and eating it later. He also licks his paws, rubs his face with his paws, meow, purr, etc. as a cat would. Same with being with the one he loves. As a devoted pet cat, he will become attached to them. He will follow them everywhere. You see the mistress/master, Cheshire will be there, unless told otherwise.
When hostile, Cheshire will kill, or at least attempt to. First, he would fight against those he knows can easily kill. These types of opponents would be reduced to play food. Those he believes he has little chance of killing would be left to be killed by other means. It’s obvious he hates to lose. Or rather, he’s afraid of losing. Losing a fight would mean losing his loved ones. He aims to be the “one and only knight” that guards his most precious mistress/master and defeat, even once, would be failing to achieve that. However, if it meant fighting the difficult, stronger enemies himself to protect his beloved owner, or perhaps anything else very precious to him, he would. He will go insane, berserk, and he will fight to the end, even if it meant sacrificing himself.
As of now, Cheshire’s precious owner/mistress is ‘Alice’, as in both the Will and Alice (B-Rabbit). Cheshire is completely loyal to the Will and would do anything for her. Although the Will hates Alice (and vice versa), the Will still cares for Alice. Therefore, Cheshire protects and is obedient to both the Will and Alice (however, he is seen more devoted to the Will). For this reason, he would destroy everyone or anyone that would hurt ‘Alice’. Everything he does is for ‘Alice’ ’s happiness and common sense does not apply to him when it comes to that.
When meeting strangers, he would be indifferent and judge them with two options: kill or spare their lives. Those that irritate or annoy him, he will attack them. Of course, he takes Alice’s opinion first before his own. Cheshire’s emotions are pretty easy to read, and his actions rely heavily on them. Angry, happy, sad, scared, all can be seen through his expressions. Even if he was terrified and would deny it, his expression can easily show his fear. His curiosity is also apparent, another cat trait. Whether fighting or killing, Cheshire will talk and ask his opponents questions, major or minor, out of curiosity.
So basically, he’s just a loyal cat that can kill.
Abilities/Strengths:
Physical/Mental Abilities: Cheshire has incredible speed and brute strength along with the massive paws/claws of his to beat up his enemies. His instinctive nature also helps when determining his enemies’ strength. As mentioned before, he fights those he can kill, and lets something or someone else do the dirty work with those he can’t (unless he has to). Other than that, he doesn’t really think before attacking.

Chain Abilities: Cheshire can teleport between dimensions by having the two tails of his scarf circle around him. Of course, this ability wouldn’t work in Kannagara if he tried it. He can also detect other Chains presence even when they are hidden, such as Break’s Mad Hatter and Gil’s Raven. Cheshire has regenerative abilities as well. However, it only works when the damage is done by something not Abyss related. Another ability he has is transforming to three different forms. One as a large shadow with a huge demented grin when he travels briefly from the Abyss to the real world (top image to the right), second as human looking (described in Appearances), and third as a berserk Chain (lower image to the right).
In canon, he can float on air, but it is probably only when he is in the Abyss, so no cool hovering skill in Kannagara for him.
Weaknesses:
Mentally/Emotionally: I suppose being so overboard devoted to Alice counts as a weakness. His boundless loyalty is what had gotten him killed after all. Instead of saving himself by escaping the crumbling dimension, he continued to defend the place, as he was told to guard it.
Since he is easily provoked, Cheshire’s tends to attack upon anger. It would make him more vulnerable to defeat as he lets his anger drive his movements. If it goes further, he will go insane and blindly destroy everything in in his path.
Physically: B-Rabbit and Mad Hatter’s power is definitely a weakness for Cheshire. It is seen in canon that Mad Hatter’s ability, which can destroy anything that has affinity to the Abyss, can easily reduce Cheshire to ashes. B-Rabbit’s power is the same. This also adds that Cheshire’s regenerative ability is worthless against these two Chains.
Defining Quote(s):
“Cheshire is a cat and always was.” – Chapter 18, page 6, Cheshire to Oz
“You’re a really strange person/ You’re able to laugh even though you’re being beaten… You’re the one being beaten up… Yet you still act as if it’s not your business at all… You’re standing right here, and yet… you don’t belong anywhere.” – Chapter 18, page 6-8, Cheshire to Oz.
“Maybe…he wants to become that kind of person that risks his own life to protect the belongings of the person he cherishes, the one and only knight.” – Chapter 18, page 23, Jack talking about Cheshire to Oz
“No matter you, B-Rabbit, or Raven! Cheshire will kill each and every one of you! Cheshire stays here because of that girl! For her sake, I must kill you all!” – Chapter 20, page 14, Cheshire to Break
“Alice…! Everything that made you sad, everything that hurt you, Cheshire will destroy them!” – Chapter 21, page 7, Cheshire to Alice
" Alice… Alice… Alice! .....Cheshire's...... most precious......" – Chapter 21, page 9-10, Cheshire to Alice
Other: Hmm, it might be part of his cat characteristics that he always speaks in third person when referring to himself. Other than that, nothing else really.
Action Writing Sample:
….
Alice?
[…was the first word said in this feed.
And at that moment, from a low frontal angle, an unusual figure is displayed on the frame. Unusual, being an understatement, for the figure is a dark-clothed teenage male with cat ears sticking out from the top of his head, black ones that match his unruly short hair, along with a tail ending with a white tip. As if that wasn’t surprising enough, this cat creature comes with massive, threatening, sharp claws.
He was sitting upright, cat-style, at his most alert. He was glancing around now, sniffing the air as his expression filled with confusion and fear. His uncovered red left eye (his right was hidden behind his swept bangs) didn’t seem to appear to notice that the device was recording and broadcasting him.]
[This doesn’t seem right. This air, this calming presence, it doesn’t smell like the same scent as his beloved home. But he was just there. It was just moments ago he was killing that red-eyed guy. And those other pesky intruders. Yes, back at his crumbling home, where he was giving his all protecting Alice’s most precious memories.
Then… Then that red-eyed guy… with Mad Hatter…]
[The Chain’s face suddenly contorted in terror.]
Where? Where is this place?
[He quickly began pacing back and forth along the Himorogi tree, occasionally getting on all fours, as if looking for an exit.]
Cheshire needs to get back. To protect that girl’s memories. Alice’s memories.
Alice.
Alice.
[And he continues the futile search while desperately and repeatedly calling “Alice”.]
Third Person Writing Sample:
The happy face of his beloved mistress of that day, Cheshire remembers it clearly. It was when he was first given to Alice. She held him so gently, so affectionately, that Cheshire instantly knew he would love his new owner.
From that day on, Cheshire followed Alice as she went about her activities inside the hidden tower, within the Baskerville’s estate. He watched her draw, listened to her play the piano, joined her in a tea party, caught a mouse or two for her; they did many, many things together, making every day fun. She even gave him present, a red ribbon to wear, to show that he was her cat, her friend. Cheshire was hers and he will always be with her. And Alice loved his constant presence. Cheshire knew. He always knows what his mistress is feeling and what she wanted.
Always.
But… there were times when Cheshire didn’t. It was strange. The atmosphere, the scent, surrounding Alice would suddenly change. Cheshire didn’t feel the same affection when he was held by this ‘Alice’. He didn’t understand why she would suddenly do completely new and different things with him. She was the same person, but she was also different.
He didn’t like it. The fact there were times when he can’t follow his mistress’s thoughts. This different Alice’s thoughts.
So that is why, Cheshire rejected the other ‘Alice’.
This person is not my mistress. She’s an imposter.
However, Cheshire can’t leave whenever this happens. He doesn’t want to leave. Otherwise… otherwise…when his Alice comes back, she will be all alone. She’ll be sad like before… Before Cheshire came. But as long as Cheshire is always with her, everything will be okay. Cheshire will stay with her forever and ever. She will be happy. And all of her lonely, sad feelings will be gone. So he will wait, and keep waiting, until Alice returns. Away from the imposter, since he was Alice’s cat, not this one’s.
Come back.
Come back, Alice.
Cheshire’s most precious...
Cheshire’s most precious Alice.
Come back.
