On cancer

Changed my journal layout (again - seeing as I just changed it last night) to fruitstyle's Hope Orange which she has made to raise funds for cancer research (I've reposted her post too!). It just came up on my friends list and I couldn't not help spread the message even if I can't quite donate atm. During my lifetime, I've seen, experienced, live through two people in my life die from cancer, one was a very close family friend and the other was my cousin. I'll just say that these two deaths have upset me quite bit and has coloured how I see comments on cancer or how it's viewed (I've seen it used callously, people throwing around 'oh I hate you, I hope you get cancer' and no, no, no you don't you do not wish cancer upon someone). So it's an issue that I'm rather sensitive towards and well, if you can I'd hope you'll either donate or spread the message around - or even just use this lovely layout! :)

To be honest, I keep a pretty firm division of my fandom stuff and my rl stuff. I have a separate blog on blogger which was opened for the sole purpose of keeping in touch within a circle of some of my friends. Even if the bonds from the circle has weakened I still occasionally use that blog especially when I feel overly emotional and need a place to vent (tbh, I also have no friends on lj which is the reason I don't use the blogging feature of it much haha). This post is going to cross over. A lot. But this really kinda simple incident today just made me think - it made me just a teensy bit ashamed of myself too.

See, the thing is, I'm starting uni soon and this week was orientation week - today I went into the uni and all the club and societies were gathered each under a stall of their own for you to find out more about and to allow you to join. And while I was walking and checking out these stalls with a friend of mine we passed to Anime Society. I really don't know what came over me in that moment. I mean, I love anime(/manga) and well anyone could probably see that just from a single peek at my life - even my diary/organizer has chibis of characters that I love on the cover. What I'm trying to say is this thing it's my passion and I probably would have bypassed the store even though I had seen it if my friend didn't point it out to me (on another note, I love her I really do - she and I have never been close but she one of the best people I know, mainly because she isn't fake, if she likes something she'll tell you plain and simple even if it's not 'cool' or whatever - she's a bit weird to strangers and people who don't know her maybe but she's just so very lovely).

I mean, all my irl friends know that I love anime too but when it came to approaching that stall - I was embarrassed to because it seemed like such a childish/geeky/'uncool' thing to do. And that makes me so incredibly disappointed - in myself mostly but also just in the environment that let me think that way. I hate feeling that way. Because when I do it means I'm not being true to myself - that for some fucked up reason I'm feeling like I'm not good enough or that I need to hide something about my self to fit in. And I don't and I shouldn't have to. It's just something that gets to me because I do know that I'm insecure (and oh don't I know it but that's another rant for another day) and shy at times and just not very good at getting on with people but even with all of that I want to be myself because well you only live once and I refuse to live the life of being someone else.

I guess, what I really wanted to say through all this is that fandom whether that be kpop, bones or animanga is such a huge part of my life that I won't be ashamed of it anymore. That'll I'll love and enjoy fandom with all my heart whether that be in the form of graphics or fanfiction (which once again will be another rant for another day) or just whatever the hell I like because that is me and that is my life - something which I should never let social expectations to dictate.
