Movies & Books list June 2013
* = Repeated viewing/re-read

Movies:
The 'Burbs * (1989) (it had been too long, I don't think I'll ever get bored of this movie ❤)
Miss Potter (2006) Enjoyed this, a nice way to pass an afternoon - it made me want to read more about Beatrix Potter as I realised I know very little about her.
Pretty Woman * (1990)
The Outsiders (1983)
Better off Dead (1989) - Cheered us up after the slightly depressing, but excellent, Outsiders :)
Lady & the Tramp * (1955) - Dave had never seen it, so I fixed that! Forgot how lovely the animation was ❤
Point Break * (1991) :D :D :D
National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) - So I finally saw Animal House, unfortunately it's really dated badly & most of the jokes fall very flat. The comparable Caddyshack from 1980 has aged much better IMO.
Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - How cute is this movie? Watch it just for the awesome 80's fashion if nothing else!
Razorback (1984) - Another one off the 'natural horror' list, I thought this would be a really straightforward b-movie about a giant pig eating people. Bizarrely it featured some really pretty and trippy cinematography with some really bad b-movie elements, some really bad b-movie music, and Mad Max inspired villians & vehicles - and the oddest only *just* related to the movie Easter Egg feature on the DVD.
(Most of) Cliffhanger (1993) My god this is a bad movie.

TV:
We finally finished watching Angel, although I had seen season 5 before so ~ yeah. Can't say I was very sad it finished when it did. :/
Finally watched all of the IT Crowd that we hadn't seen (the most recent season, mainly.)
I've been watching The White Queen.

BOOKS: Hardly any again, I seem to be having a slow-reading year so far! My concentration levels are really poor at the moment.
Durable Goods & Joy School, both by Elizabeth Berg.
Live Bait by P.J. Tracy

I am always behind updating with this list thing.

* = repeated viewing/re-read

MOVIES:
Hot fuzz (2007)*
Class (1983) - Rob Lowe. Andrew McCarthy. Together. Fighting in mud?! YES. This was good.
Dracula (1992) - despite starring four of my favourite actors (Gary Oldman, Keanu Reeves ♥, Winona Ryder & Anthony Hopkins) & directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this was pretty terrible. (First time watching it all the way through, Dave enjoyed it! D:)
Paris, Texas (1984) I am troubled and can't decide if I loved this or not. Lots of nice scenery though.
Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959)* : )
The Last Exorcism (2010)* - Did not stand up to a repeated viewing, really.
The Edge (1997)* - Anthony Hopkins Vs HUGE bear. What more do you want? (The awesome Bart the bear, to be precise.)
Shattered Glass (2003)

BOOKS: ~ another light reading month.
Advice for Strays by Justine Kilkerr (actually, I'm still reading this, it started off really well but somewhere along the way I just sort of, wandered off.)
Whisper of Death by Christopher Pike (ah, nostalgia.)
I Capture the Castle by Dodi Smith (Really enjoyed this :) )

* = Repeated viewing/reading

Movies:
The Evil Dead II (1987) - somehow never saw the second one before! I need to own them.
Deliverance * (1972)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)
All that Heaven Allows * (1955) - Have a soft spot for this movie, seems to be on FilmFour fairly often.
Silent Running (1972) - I was very, very taken with this movie, even if it broke my heart a little bit.
Planet of the Apes * (1968)
Zardoz (1974) - WhatwasthatIdon'teven D: Possibly one of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen. Def. watch it if you get chance, just for the giant flying head.
Airplane! * (1980)
The Naked Gun * (1988)
The Hunger Games * (2011) - Dave finished reading the books, so a re-watching was in order.
Vampyre (1932) - Very interesting to see such an old horror.
Point of Origin (2002)
The Lost Boys * (1987) I love you too much, movie.

TV:
Angel seasons 4-5 (at the time of writing this, we are just about to finish season 5, which I have actually seen before.)

Books:
Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler
The Abortionist's Daughter by Elisabeth Hyde
Chinese Cinderella * By Adeline Yen Mah
Gone by Mo Hayder
Ten Thousand Sorrows by Elizabeth Kim

Movies & Books List Dec 2012 - March 2013

So I realised I absolutely forgot to post my movies & books list here since December last year, although I have been keeping it!

* = Repeated viewing/reading

December 2012
Movies:
The Nightmare Before Christmas* (1993)
The Daisy Chain (2008)
Dawn of the Dead* (1979) - I honestly forgot how much I loved this movie.
You've Got Mail* (1998) - One of the few romcoms I like. I still don't really know why I like it so much!
Savage Grace (2007)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation* (1989) IT'S TRADITION.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn* (2012)
Gremlins* (1984)
Flight of the Navigator* (1986) - It had been way too long since I last saw this, still love it.
The Duchess & the Dirtwater Fox* (1976) - possibly Goldie Hawn's best movie.
Ratatouille (2008)
Troll Hunter* (2012) - Testing new Blu-Ray player :D

Books:
Apparently I read nothing in December according to my notebook :/ I find this highly unlikely.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

January 2013
Movies:
Mary Poppins* (1964)
The Princess & the Frog* (2010)
Arrietty (2012) - I have to say I was really disappointed by this :< I've always loved various adaptations of The Borrowers, and I was so excited to see the Ghibli adaption ~ but it just didn't work for me for some reason. The animation was lush and gorgeous, but I just came away thinking 'not their best effort.' I might warm to it on a repeat viewing..?
Disturbia (2008)
Double Jeopardy* (2000)
Anaconda (2007) - Watched to cross another movie of my 'nature horror' list. It was bad. Bad and lame.

Books:
The Help by Kathyrn Stockett
Prophecy by Peter James
Under the Skin by Nikki French
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins*

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

February 2013
Movies:
Monster (2003)
Cabin in the Woods (2012) - I like it, even if it suddenly turned into season 4 of Buffy.
The Brave One (2007)
Sucker Punch (2011) - I'm still not entirely sure what to make of Sucker Punch, except that I liked the soundtrack a lot.
RAN (1985) - This was actually awesome and interesting as an adaption of King Lear.
Another Earth (2011) - I loved this ~ pretty & thoughtful
An American Crime (2008)
The Girl Next Door (2010) - Both this movie and An American Crime are based on the same horrible true crime story, but the latter film is further from what happened and has genuinely nasty scenes in places. I pretty much watched it to compare with the first movie. An American Crime is the 'better' of the two.
Runaway Jury (2004)

Books:
The Cutting Room by Jillian Hoffman
Retribution by Jillian Hoffman
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins*

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

March 2013
Movies:
The Producers (1968)
Spaceballs* (1987)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?* (1988)
Chasing Amy* (1997)
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back* (2001)
The Devil Wears Prada* (2006) - Apparently I WILL watch this every time it is on telly :)
Red Dawn (1984) - I...Don't know where to even start with this one. I saw it described somewhere as 'A Republican's wet dream'...But I kinda enjoyed it to a degree. I was surprised by how many of my beloved 80's actors/actresses turn up in it!
Robocop* (1987) - Dave & I were having a conversation which ended in watching Robocop, as all good conversations should.
Demolition Man (1993)
Super 8 (2011) - A lot of people had recommended this to me saying it would be 'right up my street'. I did enjoy it, but not enough to buy the DVD or anything.

TV:
Angel seasons 3-4 (I honestly barely tolerated season 4, the best part in either season was Angelus turning up and Lilah, who is awesome.)
Madoka Magica (which I enjoyed very much!)

Books:
Plea of Insanity by Jillian Hoffman
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins*
Cell by Stephen King
True to Form by Elizabeth Berg*
Digging to America by Anne Tyler* (By the end of the month I was only in the mood to re-read easy books.)

There, all caught up ♥

Movies & Books List November

Late again...

* = Repeated viewing/reading
Honestly can't remember if I watched some of these in November or at the start of this month. OH WELL!

Movies:
Melancholia (2011) I...actually really loved this. I can't really articulate why (apart from it being pretty.)
Macross: Do You Remember Love?* (1984) YES I DO *_* So happy to watch this again.
Fantasia* (1940) Awesome to watch this again, it had been years. I used to have it on VHS.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - Enjoyed this, but wished for more Dark Pheonix action!
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) - Eh, fun ~ :) Would like to see the original.
Say Anything (1989) - Finally seen it! Very cute. Led to me re-watching...
...Easy A* (2010)
Burning Bright (2010) - How was I supposed to resist a set up like this?!: A thriller centered on a young woman and her autistic little brother who are trapped in a house with a ravenous tiger during a hurricane. XD Another one crossed off the Natural Horror List

Books:
I hardly read anything this month, very unusual for me. But I finished 'The People who Eat Darkness' by Richard Lloyd Parry. Very interesting, tragic true crime about Lucie Blackman who was murdered while working as a Hostess in Toyko. Interesting to read about the criminal investigation and court system in Japan.

TV-wise we have been working our way through Angel, that is until Lovefilm Instant randomly stopped working for us a couple of days ago >.>''''

Movies & Books List October

(A little late)

* = repeated viewing/reading.

Movies
Apocalypse Now (Redux) - first time I'd ever watched it properly, and it was the extended version. I got a sore butt but I loved it! Such a surprisingly pretty film.
Up In the Air - I identified with a lot of the sentiments in this movie. The end broke my heart a little bit.
Back to the Future*
Back to the Future part II*
Back to the Future part III*
Changling
Chronicle
Citizen Kane ~ ROSEBUD! Quite enjoyable, I understand all the parodies now - And now I know where the 'Monty Burns' song came from!
Pet Sematary*
Revolutionary Road - Gee, this depressed me for the rest of the day ;_;
Hocus Pocus* STILL AWESOME
X-Men 2 - Enjoyed it much more than the first film.

The Reef - Completely ridiculous. As situation horror-thrillers go it wasn't too bad at first, but having knowledge of Great White Sharks ( despite my love of JAWS) made the movie impossible for me to enjoy, and the characters were so annoying I wasn't sorry when they got eaten. (Although it was loosely based on a true story, it was a different species of shark involved, and more than one at that.) However it's another one I can cross off the list I am working though. :)

Felidae - OH MY GOD. I was browsing old animation on you tube and people kept mentioning this movie. So I watched it. It contains nightmare fuel that gives Watership Down a run for it's money! However, I did enjoy the film - certainly NOT for children. It's German adult animation about a detective cat investigating horrific murders of fellow cats in his new neighborhood. I would recommend it with caution - you can watch the (actually pretty good) English dub in parts on you tube:

Books
The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson
Nelson (Brit comic anthology) by various.
Forget Me Never by Gina Blaxill (Good job, hon!) :D
Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Felidae by Akif Pirinçci (I liked the movie enough that I bought the paperbacks - I am actually enjoying it more than the movie!)

Movies watched: (* notes a repeated viewing/reading)
A fair few horror movies this month because of the Fright Fest season on FilmFour 9we still have more we recorded to watch!)

JAWS* (1975)
Anna and the King (1999)
Fantastic Four* (2005)
Butterfly on a Wheel (2007) - Good, twisty plot.
Frozen (2010) - Peril with added wolves. (So for me, actually a little scary.)
Anti-Christ (2009) - Better than expected.
My Girl* (1991) (I finally own them on DVD)
My Girl 2* (1994) (I always wished they'd made a third one with her in college or something.)
The Last Exorcism (2010) - Not bad.
Sirens (1993) - Actually pretty sexy. Only time I have found Hugh Grant actually not annoying, probebly because he wasn't in it that much. :P
Zoolander* (2001) YES I will watch it everytime it is on!
The Lovely Bones* (2009)
Near Dark* (1987) I forgot that half the cast of ALIENS are in this movie! As vampires, now that was weird. D:
Confessions (Kokuhaku) (2010) - New favourite movie ♥
Audition (1999) - I finally got around to watching it properly. Not as shocking as I was led to believe, but maybe I've just become jaded.
X-Men (2000) - Dave's choice, I wasn't too taken with it.
F (2010) - I actually fast forwarded it to find out what happened, it was so boring D:
Repulsion (1965) - Pretty scary stuff, well I think 'jarring' was more the word.
Midnight Cowboy (1969) - I really liked it, and I still love the soundtrack : )
Gamer (2009) - As part of my 'Death Games' list inspired by BR/HG - better than I expected, the idea of 'live' Sims was entertaining, and it had added Dexter!
Precious (2009)

TV:
None. I've become addicted to watching documentaries about anything and everything on youtube while drawing.

Books/Comics: Another poor month ~
JAWS By Peter Benchley* - Summer always puts me in a 'watching JAWS' kind of mood and I decided to re-read the novel which I own in hardcover but haven't read since I was a young teen (I remembered very little about it) I have to say, it is not a great novel. And upon re-reading it I am even more amazed the film turned out so well in terms of likable characters. Quint is even more of an evil bastard in the book, Brody and Hooper are generally unlikable. Even Ellen is unlikable!
The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve - Pretty interesting concept and story.
Remember Me by Christopher Pike* - my trip down memory lane continues :)
Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa* - Still one of my favourite mangas, and I still tear up at the end! (The storage locker scene) :)
And now I'm re-reading Honey & Clover by Chica Umino (also one of my favourites!)

I recorded this movie off Film Four the other night and watched it yesterday. I can honestly say it has been a very long time since I was this impressed by a film. Riveting plot, gorgeous cinematography and a haunting soundtrack. I fell in love instantly.

One of the scenes that I was particularly blown away by was the beautifully filmed reverse explosion. I couldn't find a clip of it on YouTube, but there's a few in this nicely put together MV (the Radiohead song is in the movie also.)

<lj-embed id="71" />

Oooh - that's kind of annoying but also kind of good. Over the weekend we watched Antichrist and Frozen from Lovefilm and they're on tonight and tomorrow night! D: D'oh. On the plus side I can take a couple of films off my lovefilm list as they're on over the next couple of nights as part of FilmFour's Frightfest season :D

Frozen is on tomorrow - it was okay. It's one of those 'people in unlikely peril' movies that I don't strictly consider horror movies, like Adrift or Open Water. But with added wolves. I rented it mainly because I am on a nature-horror kick. I'd probably watch it again, but I wouldn't add it to my collection.

Antichrist is on tonight. The most notorious scenes aside, was better and more interesting than I expected it to be. Afterwards I said to Dave it oddly reminded me of a mix of The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, Misery and Pet Sematary all rolled into one. (Interestingly, two of those are Kubricks, and three are Stephen King novels. Hrm.) It's worth a watch if you can stomach the nasty bits. To be honest the most disturbing part for me was watching someone else having a panic attack. (And that FOX wtf!)
Again I would maybe watch it again, but I wouldn't add it to my collection. Dave might though, he likes his disturbing, arty horror.

Horror movies, I just can't quit you ♥

<lj-embed id="70" />

A beautifully put together scene as one of the King's concubine's and her lover are put to death. I acually haven't watched this move all the way through properly! It was either late last month or earlier this month when it was on TV during the day - I had it one in the background as I was doing housework, but I ended up standing, captivated, in front of the television during this scene. It really stuck in my mind for the rest of the day, especially the way the two lovers smiled at each other. I will make time to watch it again soon.

100 movie scenes

I'm soooooooooooooooooo tired!

I got back from town and fell asleep on the couch D:
And now I have many things to do in the house, but would rather just curl up and sleep!

I'm so behind with LJ again, but I'm going to have to catch up with everything on Sunday night - we're going visiting Grantham and Nottingham folks tomorrow for the weekend. I hope you've all been good - have an awesome weekend and I'll comment allll over the place soon!

I leave you with this, which I've finally started keeping again:

Movies watched: (* notes a repeated viewing)
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)*
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)*
The Greatest (2009)
Nina's Heavenly Delights (2006)
The Devil Wears Prada (2006) (I have to watch this every time it's on, it's like an addiction...)*
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)*
Fright Night (2011)
Fright Night (1985)*
Joan of Arc (The Messenger) (1999)*
The Painted Veil (2006)
Daredevil (2003) (The most likeable I have ever found Ben Affleck.)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)*
The Crying Game (1992)*
Marie Antoinette (2006)*
Jindabyne (2006)
Black Swan (2010)
Women of Valor (1986)
A Knight's Tale (2001)
The Thing (2011) (I didn't hate it despite my love for John Carpenter's movie. in fact, apart from a few instances of horrible CGI it was pretty enjoyable!)

TV:
We have been slowly working our way through season one of True Blood (which I've already seen) after I found it used on Amazon for £6 (with free shipping!) :)

Books: I have had a very poor attention span with books this month.
Divergent by Veronica Roth - birthday present from wovenglitter :) They need to make this into a movie! Also, if you liked the Hunger Games you might like this.
Nanny Returns by Nicola Kraus & Emma McLaughlin - Just as frustrating as the first one, don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to go back for more punishment. I have never wanted to shake someone so much as the main character.
Testimony by Anita Shreve
And I am still reading Hanging Hill by Mo Hayder.

<lj-embed id="65" />

How often do you get to see a GIANT rubber Alligator rampage through a wedding?! He only wanted some cake.

I love creature features. I love this movie, and Dave and I just re-watched it the other night so I thought I'd post up the wedding crashing scene. Plot wise this is the part when the creature takes care of the corrupt people of the city - the Mayor, the millionaire and the dodgy scientist guy (the groom!)

Now this scene is just plain silly, but it's one of the enduring memories of movie moments me and my friends were fascinated with when I was younger. What can I say, we were bloodthirsty children ;) I can tell you that this scene is even better in slow motion, or in rewind in slow motion (you can re-build the wedding cake!)

Most of the rest of the movie is actually quite good, the sewer scenes in particular are suspensefully shot, and I find Robert Forster (David Madison) to be rather attractive :)

I first saw this after a friend taped it off Moviedrome on BBC2. Anyone remember Moviedrome? Alligator was screened in 1992. Someone has compiled a helpful list of Moviedrome offerings here :)

Worst.

<lj-embed id="59" />

JAWS is one of my very favourite movies. When I was little it was all about the shark! When I got older it's become more about the film and the actors. Even when I was a kid and didn't fully understand this scene it gave me chills.

This is just one of many scenes I could have picked, but this is the one that still gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it.

I fist saw Ginger Snaps late at night on the Sci-Fi channel. It was listed as being a 'female werewolf movie' and I really wasn't expecting anything more than some crappy b-movie. Well, from the opening credits of Bridget and Ginger's death sideshow for their class project (which was supposed to be about life in their small town, and lands them in the school counsellors office) I knew that this was something else.

I can't say the movie is particularly scary, but it is very funny, stylish, clever and highly entertaining - and one of my favourite werewolf/horror movies.

* WARNING for the squeamish - blood/death/suicide imagery *

<lj-embed id="55" />

<lj-embed id="54" />

I have only seen this movie twice, and years apart (even though I own it on DVD). Towards the end of last year we decided to watch my DVD of it, and at the time by some coincidence 'Head Over Heels' was a song I was particularly enjoying when I moved my comic's setting to the late 80s - but I had totally forgotten about this scene (and somehow, that the movie is also set in 1988) and was very happy when I saw it. I love the idea of forsaking dialogue while introducing most of your characters.

Also the scene after the 'music video' part of this clip is adorable, and Drew Barrymore is awesome in this movie. I need to watch it again soon! I don't know what I was doing the first time I saw it, but the second time I was rather smitten with it.

Trivia: The movie was shot in 28 days, exactly the time-span of the movie itself.

<lj-embed id="53" />

*points to icon* I love this movie SO much, and think it's very underrated. I love that the whole movie takes place in one everyday suburban street. Dave and I watch it constantly and make up things about our neighbours XD. Gotta love Tom Hanks when he was at his comedic best :)

Trvia from IMDB: The street was shot on location in the Universal Backlot. It's been used in many films and TV shows, including Desperate Housewives.

<lj-embed id="50" />

Trivia via IMDB: The Parade sequence (Twist and Shout scene) was filmed during the Von Steuben Day Parade. An annual event in the Chicagoland area.

Never fails to bring a smile to my face. Just wait until it all kicks off about two minutes in, have a little dance and have an awesome afternoon! :)

Decided to do this meme I pinched off Ku :)
So in no particular order -

<lj-embed id="48" />

Seems appropriate since Dave and I watched ALIENS last night : )
This isn't actually the scene I went looking for on youtube, but it was the second one I had in mind. The first scene would have been the moment Ripley and Newt stumble into the Alien Queen and you get to see her for the first time. I'm a big fan of Queenie! :D There was a video on you tube but it had stupid music over the top :( (There is no music at all in that scene.)

I first saw ALIENS when I was about 12/13. I was completely in love with it then and I started buying the novels and comics as well, in fact the ALIENS based comics were the first 'grown up' comics I ever read. I have no idea how many times I have seen this movie, I love ALIEN about the same. When Dave and I get around to getting a Blu Ray player, this will be one of the first discs I buy.

(I am quite excited about Prometheus which takes place in the same universe.)
