Think Yuletide for charity - you pick the fandom, you pick the prompt, you offer your five bucks, and then an author swoops in and volunteers to write it. (Or an artist! Fanart is totally welcome!) We're aiming for those fics you never thought would get written, but we're never going to tell you your fandom is too big either. RPF, crossovers, crackfic, AUs, you name it. It's here. We've got about $300 raised in a day already, but we need as many people as possible to both prompt and fill, so we can get as many new fanworks as possible created AND as many donations in too!

The incredible allthingsholy is hosting it at her journal. So please, come participate and spread the word. Usually I hate asking for signal boosting like this, but we desperately need it.

Prompts will last until March 26, and fills are due by April 10.

With all the fandom auctions going on to aid Japan in their earthquake relief efforts, there's a multitude of new fanworks bound to be produced, and a boatload of donations piling in. AND THAT'S AWESOME. There are all sorts of authors and artists offering their services for charity, and we give them two thumbs up and a big HELLS YEAH for that. Here, we're doing something a little different.

The idea's simple. Just comment with a list of fics you've always wanted from fandoms that get less attention, or ships and pairings that don't get as much love. If someone can write 1k words about any of your fandoms/pairings, you donate $5 to the charity of their choice. Then you get your fic.

That's it.

$5 = 1k words of your dream fic.

I'd skip this if you are not involved in BBT fandom, because otherwise, you are going to be very lost. (But if you'd like catching up, I'd look to Fandom_Wank for an attempt at explanation.)

It seems a little silly to pretend like I haven't seen the latest stuff to go up at spanon. Because I have. I'm not really going to comment on their content, beyond one point I'd really like to make.

I was unaware that making friends via fandom was considered forming a clique.

Seriously.

Yes, I have have a group of friends that I have formed via eljay, twitter, and tumblr thanks to BBT. I would not say we are exclusive, or that our primary goal is to "run fandom" by any stretch. We honestly enjoy talking to one another. Yes, one of my best friends in this fandom also happens to be a mod. I don't think that should affect our friendship. Maybe some people think differently, but I'm about 99% sure I don't get any special treatment. In fact, I usually take care not to overstep my boundaries. I frequently cleared posts before I posted them (that weren't creative-works based), including all of the help_haiti posts and the media post for the People's Choice Awards.

I think that this group of friends does happen to have a high percentage of writers. (Like 100% actually.) We discuss writing, we beta for each other, we tend to come up with ridiculous random plots together. bbt_gravitation was an obvious product of this, as were some of the other communities I help mod. We don't want to "run fandom." Our primary goal is to widen up our options, to provide archives and places to post fic that might not otherwise have a home. I certainly wouldn't say any of the other comms I mod to have the span or influence of Paradox. I don't think we're stepping on any toes. We are active in the fandom, and want to see it thrive. There aren't any sinister motives. But mostly, we talk about life in general, which does include our fandom interests, of course, but plenty of other stuff as well. If you follow fujiidom and I on twitter, well, you know exactly what I mean. (And I apologize now.) I think every single one of us that would be considered a "clique member" is approachable, friendly, and generally willing to talk via LJ comments, PMs, twitter, etc.

(I keep saying they. Don't think I speak for all of us. This is purely from my point of view, JSYK.)

I think there has been some really positive stuff to come from spanon. And granted, I am maybe biased, since really, I have received very little negative commentary. (And to stop any rumors before they start: I have not been asked to mod Paradox. I do not know if anyone will ask me to mod Paradox. I certainly have ideas about the community, but I think I can execute them just as well as an involved member as a mod. I'm uncertain what my response would be if I did get asked, as I would want to make sure I could commit my time and energy to a level that Paradox deserves, and between work, the puppy, a semblance of a normal life, and writing commitments, I'm not sure I would be able to. So that's the scoop on that.)

I think we've realized we all need to be a little more proactive about reviewing/commenting on fic when we read it. I know I have been slacking lately. I always make an attempt to leave meaningful comments for the fics I read and enjoy, although I know not everyone has the time - and that's fine. I like to pick out the things I like to let the author know what worked for me, whether it's dialogue, or plot, or just a particular line that struck me. I know that -- as a writer -- I appreciate every comment I get, whether it's just a smiley face or a \o/ or if it's a manifesto. My goal for myself after reading some of the comments at the meme is to focus on my feedback, particularly on art! I've really been terrible in that department, especially with the great artists we have, like irrel, renisanz, and znuese.

I think those of us who have been around Paradox a little longer are going to be a little more aware of how we interact with newer members. I was distancing myself from the community due to the general tone, not even two weeks ago. I think there was a pattern of behavior to ship aggressively, to disregard or outright scorn the opinions of those considered "multi-shippers" or even those who just want Sheldon and Penny to be friends. I'd like to think now that we're all going to be a little more aware of our actions and words, not just avoiding comments that are homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. There's a place for us all here, including those that ship as an OTP, that multiship, that still actively like Leonard!

I know that there are those in the fandom who find the very idea of an anonymeme horrifying. I've been in fandom for over a decade, and it's nothing I haven't seen before. I was a part of a community that actually had one every weekend, no joke. But I think when there is a definitive presence in a community, and a mod is included (and a mod with a pervasive public presence as well), it's natural that people are going to be afraid to speak up. I made a comment in that original post I made about Bill Prady's tweet in response to arabian about the responsibilities of a mod, especially one for a community as large as Paradox. Here's the link.

I think that as soon as one is put in a mod position, esp. where you have a regular feature with regular readers, and even your own tags for the breakdowns and the video clips, you automatically become a "name" whether you want to or not. This also means, as a mod, you have a certain responsibility to represent the community, as a whole, as well as its members, especially the active ones.

As much as it can be awkward to think of oneself as a BNF, I think it's something you need to acknowledge that you have a certain segment of this comm that looks to you as a model of acceptable behavior. It's heightened that extra step when you're a mod.

Here's something I'll fess up to. I knew exactly what had caused the Bill Prady tweet when I made that entry. And the reason why -- even in that comment I just linked to! -- I did not say that is because I was intimidated of what I would start. I didn't want to specifically call out arabian, because, whatever her reason, it happened and I did not want to point fingers. It was not unexpected behavior. It certainly fit in with her general M.O., which, over the past four months or so, consistently embarrassed me as a fan of the show in general, but particularly as a Sheldon/Penny fan. When I showed up at Paradox, I think there was a bit of a different vibe, but all of this was just... lurking, under the surface. It's not pretty to have to resort to an anonymeme, but it gets the job done. And for an anonymeme, you guys, this one is ridiculous nice overall. There are always going to be asshats, there will always be trolls - but I'd say overall the tone of the conversation has been driving us to build a better community (and not one that will die by the summer).

There's nothing at the anonymeme I wouldn't have posted as myself, especially knowing the general sentiment that is now apparent. And I have made posts there unanon as well, clearly breaking the unstated but blatantly obvious rules. I'd like to thank everyone that left me some love, and to those anons that wanted to talk to me - I said it at the meme, but it bears repeating. Speak up. I'm a busy kid, but I try to find some time in every day to send emails or PMs or whatever. It might take a day or two, but I'll get to you.

So of course, this is long-winded as fuck, because it's me, but thanks to those who read it all. I welcome discussion, thoughts, criticism, you name it. I think we can use this entire thing to our advantage, move on, and continue rocking on with our bad selves. See you at the discussion post? Wil Wheaton ftw :)

So uh, Alan Tudyk has been working out, huh?

(A) Saunders is a doll. Whiskey. Between Alpha calling her that, and (as I read it) her confused reaction and subsequent "realization" that Dominick-in-Victor is calling for a drink, and then his later followup questions about her always wanting to be a Doctor. I'm just saying. Right at the moment, I would almost say it's too obvious. Dominick wasn't calling for booze, so we KNOW it has to be someone in the room. Adelle, Topher, and Boyd were all accounted for during the glitching bit, so we know it can't be them. We NEVER saw Saunders (or, to be fair, Ivy) in that episode.

Um, when Alpha sliced Victor's face I got very sad. Poor kid. Also, how AMAZING did Enver have Reed Diamond's voice/mannerisms down? I was pretty blown away. He not only managed to BE Mr. Dominick, he did it as Victor, and so kudos.

The comedy that is Tahmoh + Tudyk = WIN. Medicinal carrots, etc etc. They should have a buddy cop show! Also, Alan Tudyk should then bring back the mustache he was sporting in the Firefly flashbacks. YES.

As awesome as the Echo-Paul fight was, uh, I am pretty sure the Boyd-Paul fight just KICKED ITS ASS. I didn't even know who to root for? I kept going, come on Boyd, no wait. I really hope we get a Season 2, because he has some BACKSTORY and I want to know it. There's a reason why he's there, and I will not be satisfied until we get an awesome backstory episode.

I wonder if the Briar Rose kid, Susan will actually see Echo again. That was sort of a neat little idea, although executed a bit hamfistedly, but it was nice to see a GOOD mission, started by Topher, of all people. Also, um, was that paid, or more an experiment that he was allowed to try out? I don't see ANY orphanage being all, yes, I will totally hire this morally deficit organization that costs 8 bajillion dollars, just to help out this one scewed up kid that has a fondness for sharp objects. It was something I was willing to handwave, especially once Paul's story line started picking up.

To go back to Saunders - we know she never leaves the Dollhouse. Maybe they had to keep her on post-5 year contract due to the scars? I mean, let's say you had agreed to be a Doll for 5 years, and you woke up after your contract was up, and then you woke up with HUGE ASS SCARS. I'd be a little grumpy.

Anyway, basically I want to draw little hearts around my love for Amy Acker and call it a day.

The fact that A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality is now the top result when searching for "homosexuality" at amazon.com is the #1 result is incredibly depressing, regardless is #amazonfail is a glitch, a set-up, or just stupidity on Amazon's part.

To sum up very quickly: Try searching for a GLBT book on Amazon right now, and chances are you will not find it. Books are being stripped of sales ranks/search results.

In case you are late to the #amazonfail party:

Mark Probst's book is stripped of it's rank, he complains, and posts the email he receives.
The list in progress of books that are missing sales info, etc. The non-fiction section is the one that's killing me right now.
A good summary of what the hell is going on at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, including the google bomb strategy for the term "amazon rank."

I think Neil Gaiman and Wil Wheaton helped make it even more popular when they posted.

I'm just really curious to see what will shake down tomorrow, when it's not Easter/Zombie Jesus Day. The Amazon crew has got to be bare bones, and totally overwhelmed. If it does turn out to be a set-up, it's probably the only way they are going to get out of this one - and even then, they will be hurting for a long time.

Yesterday I watched this week's Lost, 30 Rock, The Office, Important Things with Demetri Martin, and then BSG and Dollhouse.

Lost can be summed up by HI SMOKEY, I HAVE MISSED YOU.

BSG and Dollhouse require a few more words:

Here's the thing about Dollhouse. I'm nervous. Like, really nervous. Granted, we are one episode in (one that was redone, and apparently episode 2 is going to be a lot better) but I went in trying to have very low expectations, and finished... well, not disappointed, but nervous. This is Joss (a) being serious (b) being actiony (c) being on Fox. And so far, the show still feels like a big mash-up of stuff I have seen before without the Whedon wit. yes, he wants to be straight-forward with his dialogue - obvs no "mock you with my monkey pants." But Joss could write very serious stuff on Buffy and still have it sound like him: please see The Body. It's too Alias, it's too this, it's too that, but yes, it's really very Alias-y. Echo's handler is just Dixon-light.

The good stuff? Here's the sad thing, the first thing I thought of was the Eddie James Olmos shout-out. But no, there was Amy Acker too. And I'm going to be me, and immediately start shipping Echo/Saunders, because really, yes. Tahmoh will be fine, and they can continue to show him shirtless as much as they would like (and did anyone else think Unfinished Business during the boxing scene?) and he can just smoulder someplace and I will be ok with that.

As for Eliza... we all know I love the Eliza, and as I said on Twitter, really the only thing that had my attention for awhile there was the white dress, because WOW, that did not leave much to the imagination there, did it? There was some really clunky dialogue she had to handle, and some overly forced moments that I'm not sure whether to blame on her or on Joss (I'm thinking specifically of the recruitment scene in which she did a DRAMATIC head turn and my god, that dialogue! TERRIBLE.) BUT overall, as long as they keep Echo/Caroline the character interesting, I think she'll be fine.

I hate Topher a lot, despite the fact that he looks like if Tom Lenk had a love child with either Adam Busch (for the chin) or Nathan Fillion (for the facial structure). He's not Xander, and... gah. Just, do not want.

There's a lot less optimism under that cut, but I mean, I'm not going to stop watching...

HOLY SHIT. I guess a lot of people are wishy-washy about this episode? But for one that was all, holy Batman exposition, I thought it was fantastic. Kate Vernon rocked it. CHIEF IS CHIEF again. Hurrah!

They never should have cast Hodgman though, I agree with EVERYONE on that one, it threw me out of the mood. Love the man, but really poor choice.

1) Cavil = to raise trivial and frivilous objection, John = Yahweh/God is gracious. INTERESTING.

2) The two things Adama loves most, Roslin and Galactica, will be saved by Cylon biology, by actually having Cylon organic matieral directly implanted. Adama's line to Chief was perfect.

3) Everyone's reaction to Tyrol/Tory was hilarious. Win. Esp. Starbuck.

4) I find it funny that the show could actually get me to root for Boomer/Galen again. How full circle it seems.

5) Is anyone else just completely creeped out by Six/Tigh? I have issues. It's right up there with Deanna/Worf in terms of sheer weirdness.

6) I wish I could find the IM conversation I had reaaally early on asking why there was no #7. I will speculate with everyone else that Daniel = daddy starbuck + the one that "remade" her in the Mandala.
So, BSG is pretty much the greatest television show ever, right?

I bought tickets to Twilight for Friday at 4:20 pm - hopefully early enough to avoid the worst of the tweens, but late enough to still get an amusing audience. I AM DEMANDING LULZ OF AN EPIC NATURE TO JUSTIFY THE $24 SPENT.

Music thoughts!

So it's around that time where I start getting antsy about making my best of the year lists for music, except it's still a little early, and I need to wait to see what Pitchfork/Stereogum/etc has to offer. I'm not waiting for much else to come out, except for Kanye, The Killers, and David Cook. I doubt we are going to see the Juniper Lane EP by the end of 2008.

I will probably end up listening between 90-100 2008 releases, and there are already a few that easily stand out. Coldplay, Frightened Rabbit, Sigur Ros, Girl Talk, Uh Huh Her, Snow Patrol, and the Cool Kids will all be fighting for the top spots on my best albums list. I think Kanye and The Killers could be contenders as well.

The problem is that I am so picky about albums, and I think 2007 was a slightly better year, so this year I'll be more interested to see how my top songs list turns out.

I'm currently listening to some of the leaked Kanye tracks, and I really like what I am hearing, but I'll be SUPER curious to see what people think. I keep expecting rapping. It's not happening. It's all vocoder singing like Love Lockdown. The sad thing is that there are some amazing melodies in here, and I think they're going to be completely overlooked because there's no rapping. We'll see I guess.
