Sometimes your worst enemy is just day-to-day life. Modern!AU.

Lyrics come from Rise Against, "The Approaching Curve"; Plowed, "Sponge"; The Killers, "Runaways." Because they're favorites, and I can, and this is semi-pretentious self-indulgence (i.e. therapy!fic for disaffected twenty-somethings) anyway.

Cloud is so lost in his own thoughts that he doesn't realize anything is different until he finds his hand grasping the handle of a car door. "What," he tries, and doesn't argue when Zack laughs and opens the door to push him gently into the passenger seat. The slam of the door makes him jump, and Zack is grinning when he drops into the driver's seat.

"With how scatterbrained you've been lately, I figured you'd be less likely to die if I brought the car instead of the bike. I'd rather your brain stayed inside your skull than smeared down the freeway."

"Oh," says Cloud, because he can't really argue, isn't sure that Zack isn't right when he imagines trying to hold on to Zack while going 70 miles an hour. His body is already shaping itself to the seat, going boneless until his knees knock into the dashboard and his head is resting uncomfortably against the window. He ignores the way Zack is looking at him sidelong as he starts the car, watches the Seventh Heaven's faded sign getting smaller in the side mirror as they pull onto the road, wonders if Sephiroth knows that Zack borrowed his car.

"Long shift?" Zack finally asks, and Cloud huffs a short laugh. "Y'know, I hear the auto place is hiring."

"Yeah." There are already groups of people walking the town in the late morning sun, some of them in the carefully careless vintage style of the college students, others wearing the earthy tones of expensive fair-trade fibers, most in nondescript jeans and prints. There are a few teenage gutter punks, dark hoods pulled up, begging on the street corner with all their earthly belongings in a couple black plastic garbage bags beside them; Cloud remembers what that's like.

"I was thinking we could stop for a couple burgers, get some greasy calories into your scrawny stomach."

"Stomachs aren't scrawny," says Cloud.

"Well, you're doing a good job of proving otherwise. How's a double cheeseburger sound?"

"Like a heart attack."

Zack makes a pfff sound with dismissive cheerfulness. "You're twenty-two, kiddo, take advantage of your youthful metabolism while you can. You want Betty's or Rosie's?"

The only difference between the two is that Rosie's is an Irish pub with the cardboard leprechauns on the wall to prove it. "Doesn't matter."

Zack is quiet as they approach-stop-wait-go through two red lights, then suddenly jerks the car into the outside lane that feeds into the freeway exit.

"Uh, the apartment's the other way."

Zack rolls down the windows, forcing Cloud to sit up before he gets a blast of wind and exhaust to the face. "Yep."

"I should change these clothes." He can smell beer and the salt of roasted peanuts from the bar, and he remembers the gutter-punks, and he thinks that some things don't really ever change. The hand that gives his hair a thorough ruffling makes him flinch, and Zack is giving him that smile as he takes his hand back and fiddles with the radio.

"I think you're good the way you are, kiddo," says Zack over the guitar of his taste in rock, and Cloud opens his mouth to say something like, What, covered in the spills of alcohol and drunk confessions, but his throat has gone tight and he looks out the window instead. Dry brush and summer-browned trees line the freeway on either side, trimmed with the plastic bags and fast-food containers and the occasional shoe lost by oblivious drivers, broken up by the blue of the ocean on the horizon ahead. They'll remember only our smiles 'cause that's all they've seen, the radio grinds out as Cloud rests his arm on the windowsill and holds out a hand, letting the wind rush over and under it.

It takes ten minutes of wind and rock and the glare of the new sun on the car's hood before Zack takes an exit, and the number of other cars drops to just a few, the ocean now closer and bluer, the sky now so much bigger. I turn the engine over and my body just comes alive, and we're all just runaways.

"When do you think things are gonna change?" Cloud eventually asks, barely loud enough to be heard before the wind steals his breath and adds to its chorus of lost sounds. But Zack doesn't turn down the music, which Cloud appreciates, doesn't want his words to be real enough that they can drop like stones somewhere in the world.

"What do you mean?"

He's only twenty-two but sometimes he feels three times older. He's only twenty-two but sometimes he feels like he'll be stuck at twenty-two forever, like he's been caught in a cage, the days so blurred together that he can't remember half of them.

"I've been working at the bar since I was underage with the same customers and the same scratched-up counter and rags stained with stuff you really don't want to know about. I don't think I've worn anything that hasn't smelled like the floor in five years."

"Soon," says Zack, confident and optimistic, looking ahead as he talks, while Cloud's eyes keep getting drawn to the side mirror reflecting the road stretching out behind them. "I've got a bit saved up from that gig I've been doing for ShinRa and I know you've been putting aside as much of your paychecks as you can. You and me, kiddo, we'll move up to the city, get our business started, and we'll bring Aeris with us, there are always churches looking for help with their charity programs. Sephiroth, too, get him out of ShinRa's security office before he finally kills those bureaucrats."

Cloud can't help a small grin when he remembers the night Sephiroth dropped by Zack and Cloud's shitty little apartment and ranted, in that carefully controlled way of his, about superiors who get confused when turning a computer off and then on doesn't actually get rid of a virus.

Zack catches Cloud's smile out of the corner of his eye, and his own gets even wider. "Whaddya think, maybe one of those fancy townhouses with the garden out front where Aeris can show off her mad gardening skills. You know she'd either totally charm or terrify the whole neighborhood."

"Sephiroth could do our bookkeeping. He likes all those numbers," Cloud adds tentatively.

"And you know everyone needs shit delivered anyway, we'd put FedEx out of business."

"Probably drive Sephiroth crazy with all the money we'd spend on gas." Always moving, but always knowing there'd be a place to call 'home' at the end of the day: Zack's laughter, Aeris' smiles, Sephiroth's absolute loyalty.

"Eh, gives the guy a way to channel his need for terrifying efficiency."

Cloud finally lifts his gaze from the side mirror and looks forward out the windshield. The car eats up the hot, black miles with a satisfied purr while Zack sings along with the radio, and, for a little while, Cloud lets himself believe.

Got an apartment downtown with Boyfriend and another friend ~~and we're three blocks from my fave coffee shop, you can see my priorities here~~. Also a ten minute walk from the wharf with all the hacking of sea lions and the pervasive smell of ocean that creeps through your window at night.

Stealing sporadic Internet from various coffee shops and the community center across the street, but since it is so sporadic I've done more actual reading of books in the last two weeks than the last several months. Somehow I fail to regret this.

Discovered I still have a problem with spending grocery money on books. Exacerbated by now living four blocks from the nearest bookstore.

OH SHIT I'm going to be representing the 'sky' realm in the upcoming three-realm-Celtic-inspired Samhain ritual, which means ritual performance! In public! In front of other people! With the Morrigan! Why the fuck did I volunteer for this!

which you may or may not already know, i don't really make a secret of it.

for the last two weeks i've gone without any medication whatsoever because neither i nor my pharmacy can get a hold of my psychiatrist to authorize script refills, and i'd like to point out that i tutor kids primarily in elementary and middle school - which means, y'know, a person's patience may get tested from time to time.

now, i've always had something of a quickfire temper, the kind that will SUDDENLY FLARE AND CONSUME EVERYTHING INCLUDING REASON unless i can remove myself and ride out the initial wave, in which case i can generally be calm and collected or sometimes not even give a shit. the medication helps with that ~~despite killing almost all creative drive, but what can you do, i need to function enough to earn the money to eat~~.

but today i told one of my kids that i was about ready to punch a care bear because, i'm sorry, but i was having No Patience for their usual boundary-testing bullshit. "i wrote 'E Forest' because i don't want to write out 'Emerald'," even though the assignment specifically says to do so to practice capitalization, and also your spelling is terrible and needs practice anyway.

"i'm sorry to hear that. do it anyway."

also i may have told one of them to sit their butt down and do your work, i will duct tape you to the chair if i have to, this is not a time to try getting up to wander (why would you think this is acceptable anyway, you are not a goddamn five-year-old), your parents are paying good money for this hour and i'd rather be at home playing games too, do not fight me on this because i promise that you will lose.

and i feel terrible because you need to find a balance between discipline and freedom of choice, balance emotional needs with whatever academic curriculum we have to complete because who can learn when they're frustrated or embarrassed or heartbroken over a bad home life? no one, that's who. and i pride myself on being able to build good rapports with my kids. but i am pharmaceutically lacking, exhausted, bleeding and cramping for the last three weeks because of this goddamn IUD, feeling the onset of some hypomania because of seesawing for lack of stabilizers, and depressed over other personal life issues: do not fucking test me.

For The Boatman, Crossed by Death.

I have a tendency to take on ambitious projects that may or may not betray my baseline level of pretension but WHATEVER, OKAY, I DO WHAT I WANT, THOR. So in lieu of ALL the religion and mythos that I want in Dishonored, which is honestly an impossible level to reach because there will NEVER BE ENOUGH EVER, I thought I'd write my own. Which, again, quite possibly very pretentious, but that just means I was right all along and Pottermore should've put me in Ravenclaw.

A lot of this was based off info from the Dishonored Wiki, particularly the way the individual Isles relate to real-world nations. More of it was inspired by Peter Jeans' Seafaring Lore and Legend, which I admit I bought purely because of this goddamn game. I don't have the book on me because Boyfriend is borrowing it, and I can't cite specifics off the top of my head, but if you have any questions let me know and I will happily get back to you.

A couple unnamed characters come from the cultist scribblings in the Knife of Dunwall DLC.

I'm going to wait for the Brigmore Witches DLC before attempting anything about them; I figure enough of this is going to get Jossed as it is.

The Void

the Heart says that the Void is the beginning and end of all things, as well as other things that implies the Void is almost equivalent to the Outsider? it sounds like to me? idk.

a crazy number of mythologies have the world being created or renewed through kind of watery disaster, often a flood, and hey, babies are born in a rush of fluid, makes sense that the world was too

(in much of Celtic myth, water and mist are often the prelude to the otherworld, such as Avalon, and there's a reason Manannan mac Lir is a good deity to contact for the revealing of otherworldly paths)

more importantly, water is one of those metaphysical elements that's in a constant state of flux and transitions most easily from a solid to liquid to gaseous state; the very nature of in-between places, transitory states, neither-here-nor-there attributes is an attribute of the supernatural

The Outsider

I've always been fascinated by the idea of a coiled-up serpent forming the ball of the planet, and lo, leviathan

also the wonderfully morbid Norse idea of body parts = environment, e.g. a giant's skull cap being the heavenly vault

so, the leviathan is a giant goddamn sea-serpent who may or may not one day swallow up the world, which, cool, she'll have good company with Jormangundr, I suppose

The ~War~

because there's always a war between the new and the old, like the Olympians vs. the Titans or the apocryphal Satan vs. the loyal angelic hosts (there's a term for this and I CAN'T REMEMBER IT, shitfuck)

Gristol says it lasted nine days and nights because that's how long Odin ~~cross-dressed~~ hung upside down and died to get the secret of the runes; Morley says there were seven big battles because the Lebor Gabála Érenn claims that Ireland was populated in seven 'invasions'; Serkonos says a week because Italy and Catholicism; Tyvia makes note of its numerical values because I know almost nothing about Slavic myth and this theme seemed like a huge deal in Russian creation myth, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG PLZ - but mostly I was going for thematic similarities rather than strict parallels

'dividing up the sea and land (or day and night) to solve a conflict' is basically what happened with the Fomori/Tuatha de Danann, Tuatha de Danann/humans, Satan/loyal hosts, etc. Like putting a stripe of duct tape down the center of the backseat and each side claiming their own while still keeping a hairy eyeball on their sibling, and now my own spiritual practices will never be the same, jfc, self

Morley

allegedly based off Ireland/Scotland/Wales, and since my interest lies specifically in Ireland, when I read "Festival of Churners" my immediate thought was Imbolc/Candlemas/St Brighid's Day, which usually falls on February 1st or 2nd. Cows were a cornerstone of early Irish economy and are still a large part of Irish mythos, with the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) probably being the most famous example of such. Saint Brighid is often portrayed as accompanied by a white cow, and even the Morrigan had a habit of stealing Very Important cows and shapeshifting into one. You don't fuck with people's cows.

ANYWAY, February seems to fall not too far from the Month of Seeds? which is when the Festival of Churners happens, and it's worth noting, since bare feet and red robes are common on this day, that Saint Brighid/the goddess Bríd is associated with fire, the color red, planting, butter-making, and general homestead-y things.

so I used the brideog and Saint Brighid's crosses, of which there are a few different types.

Serkonos

I'm thinking Serkonos' native religion(s) would be pretty syncretistic; in the parts closest to Pandyssia, I'd anticipate something not unlike a form of Vodun or Santeria, whereas in other locations I'd be thinking things more like Stregheria (nearer Gristol) or Hellenistic-style practices (in the west)

My main criticism is that the cardstock is pretty flimsy. On the plus side, it's specifically meant to function as a Tarot deck and a playing deck; while traditional Tarot decks are perfectly capable of being playing decks (and were, once upon a time), and playing cards make a perfectly fine minor arcana, I like that this deck makes it easy to do both. Instructions are also included for an original card game meant to tie in with the game's world, which is fuckin awesome.
