Katniss and Peeta

Flashbacks and Echoes (1/1)

Title: Flashbacks and Echoes
Author: juju_bean
Rated: M for themes and language
Summary: Peeta’s good days outnumber his bad days, but Katniss doesn’t believe there’s anything good left in her to love, so she goes to District Two, thinking she’s found a way to drive a permanent wedge between herself and the boy with the bread. (Scenes are set before the Reaping, during the Victory Tour, during their time in District 13, and after the war. Mostly canon compliant.)

Set after Mockingjay and contains spoilers for all three books.

I managed 7,181 words for one chapter of a Hunger Games fic. Based on what I have outlined, there are eight more chapters to go.

I had forgotten how time consuming work is. Additionally, I have the ability to literally make my own schedule so I synched it to Steven's restaurant hours. And while it's great to still have a lot of time with him in the morning and to be up late at night, it means I've cut out most of my "free time."

I've actually started a Hunger Games fanfic, and then in a mad burst of inspiration last night I actually got 3,050 words of a Hunger Games/Harry Potter hybrid. I say hybrid and not cross-over because I've essentially made Panem have a wizarding world and threw Hogwarts in there so there are no Harry Potter characters puttering around.

I've also got a bunch of icons that I need to get around to completing and posting.

Turns out I had completed all of season 2 of Scandal previously, but it's such a good show I didn't mind re-watching it. Half way through season 3 now, and although the Fitz/Olivia ship grinds my nerves, I pretty much ship every and any one else:

Olivia/Jake
Olivia/Mellie
Olivia/Cyrus
Olivia/Huck
Mellie/Fitz
Mellie/Cyrus
Fitz/Jake
Cyrus/James
Abby/David
Quinn/Huck
Quinn/Charlie
Charlie/Huck
Eli/Marie
Olivia/Fitz/Mellie
Olivia/Fitz/Jake

The show is self aware of how juvenile and doomed Olivia/Fitz is, I just hope they don't kill off Jake. Or else at least find him someone who deserves him. Olivia is not my favorite character - I think Mellie might actually be my favorite, or Cyrus, or Huck. The angst for this show is just so unlimited.

Finished Hunger Games, I LOVED it. I didn't intend to read it all at once, but I started the first chapter then next thing I know it's 3:40AM in the morning and I'm closing the book. Giving myself some time before I start the second so I don't overload.

Put in three applications today, including one in Buffalo. Not really thrilled with commuting to Buffalo, but would really like to stick with Wells if I can. Spoke with a staffing agency and let them put me in their database. One June starts I'll have to start getting a lot less picky - though Steven did raise a good point that unemployment might be more than I'd make if I took a teller position, I know a lot of people have a hard time finding a job once it's been a while since
they've had one and I don't think I want to take that risk.

Went to the Lilac Festival yesterday, which was lots of fun. Steven was our designated driver so Kel and I got to throw back sangria slushies. Of course, Steven is the only person I know game to try latin fusion sushi from a food truck at a fair on the hottest afternoon we've had in a while - to his credit he didn't get sick from it. Mentioned the sangia slushies to my SIL and now she's extra excited for the visit at the end of the month - my plan is to have her fall in love with Rochester so she can convince Jake to move since he's on the fence about it (I was talking to my primary care doctor about this last month and he told me I was evil).

On that note, I will say I love my doctors, all of whom are another reason I'm so happy I moved to Rochester. All of the doctors I see ALWAYS take me seriously when I have a concern and they answer my questions and walk me through why they're recommending/prescribing something so I understand it. Plus it tickles me that they've come to expect Steven at all my appointments and ask for him by name when I show up to an appointment without him. Even the nurse at who draws my blood has come to expect him there to hold my band. (Of course, only the nurses see the irony in constantly taking my blood to test for the cause of my anemia.)

I only rarely saw a doctor when I was younger, and in Queens I always saw a nurse practitioner. There was a doctor's name on the practice but I doubt he ever actually saw patients there; plus you'd show up 1/2 hour early for your appointment and still wait 1.5 hours. I'm so spoiled now that if it takes 5 minutes pass my appointment time for the nurse to call me back that I start to get irritated. So having doctors that actually remember me off the top of their head (such as knowing my brother recently got married, or I recently went to Georgia) makes me love the Rochester health system.

My abscess is healing well, but I'm still having Steven change the bandages so I don't have to look at it until it's a less shallow, gaping wound. I'm trying to keep super positive about all this medical crap. Barely flinched then they took my blood today, but my arm is feeling more bruised than it usually does.

I need a cat to cuddle with but it's about 90 degrees outside and neither cat wants to be cuddled - typical cat behavior, if I wanted nothing to do with them they would be walking across my keyboard, shedding fur all over me.

Spring is here!

I'm handling Steven's new work schedule pretty well. I've made good progress through my Netflix queue. I have a huge backlog of books to read. I was by Barnes and Noble last week and picked up some books, picked up another one at a used book store, and have some more being shipped from Amazon. Started the Hunger Games trilogy today. Was crying before the first chapter ended which is a very good indicator I will love it. I was worried about first person narration because I'm not a big fan of certain writing styles but I love the tone of it. I already know I'm going to end up writing fanfic for it which has me further excited.

Also started an embroidery project as Sandra requested I duplicate this design she saw on line that reads "Behold! The field in which I grow my fucks. Lay thine eyes upon it and see that it is barren." I'm actually embroidering it rather than cross stitching it so it's slow going. I even revised the design like six times since I have to free hand it. There are about ten cross stitching projects that I have on hold; a faery tapestry that I started in 2006 when I was in college, a history of Mario one I started in 2010 when I was overseeing closing the Bayside WFF branch, one I found for my mother-in-law a couple months, to say nothing of the smaller ones I've started and stopped. I lack follow through - I still have a bunch of scrap book pages that need to be done, not to mention I still need to finish off  a quilt I started in 2011.

The Lilac Festival started last Friday, which coincided nicely with the start of our nice weather. Going to see the flowers in bloom tomorrow with Kelly; looking forward to the frozen sangrias. Roc City Rib Fest is at the end of the month, and my brother and sister-in-law will be visiting for it so I'm psyched for it. Corn Hill Arts Festival is the weekend some of my friends from NYC will be here so we can see the Fairy House Contest entries. Also looking forward to hitting up the Sterling Ren Fest again this summer, which I believe my brother will come up for to celebrate his birthday. I LOVE the variety of things to do in and around Rochester in the spring and summer.

Draco/Hermione - sorting ceremony

Email anxiety

Had an interview on Tuesday for a short term assignment for my current company but in a different division in a nearby city. Not my first pick, but it would be great to hang on to my awesome benefits for another six months. Plus it'll buy me more time to job hunt and allow me to be choosy.

I imagine in the old days, before blackberries and work laptops became standard, by 5PM you could breathe a sigh of relief and not worry every time the phone rang. Now anytime I open my email, on my phone or my laptop, I worry I'm going to see one of those automated "sorry, the position was filled, sucks to be you" emails.

I guess we can hashtag this #firstworldproblems.

Not working is a lot more stressful than it sounds. My severance started last week but I'd hoped to find a job before then. This is made worse by my husband quitting his job and landing a new one in less time than it took him to work out his notice. Of course, he's a talented chef and that industry moves a lost faster when it comes to hiring than my industry does. Still, very disheartening.

Over the last few months I've gotten use to waking up at 10AM and it's going to be rough adjusting back. Worse, Steven has gone back to working afternoons and nights so I'm just puttering around by myself now whereas before he got home by 2:30PM and we had practically all day together. Now when he gets home around 11PM it's normal to just stay up until 2AM. He still gets up at 8AM but I am not a morning person.

The upside to all this free time is I've been catching up on Netflix and spending a lot of time working on icons. Been really enjoying Photoshop Elements 11 - may even buy it when the trial is over. I've started to enjoy ABC's Agents of SHIELD and I loved the Hunger Games movies - those two are tempting me to write fanfic but I don't really want the hassle of learning how to navigate Tumblr. We'll see. I've been also spending a lot of free time playing Diablo III; never thought I'd get into a video game so much.

Thus ends the obligatory update.

Agents of SHIELD and Captain America 2 the Winter Soldier icons!

Thanks in part to how good the second Captain America movie was, and how interesting SHIELD has gotten since Ward went evil, I've been inspired to make some icons. I pretty much ship Ward/Everyone and Captain America/Winter Solider though I do have a soft spot for Captain America/Black Widow.

Please comment and credit juju_bean if you take any. Enjoy!
