My Photo Journal
week 3: Weathered Layers
Texture
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about texture. You know, as one does. I live in a small town in on the Puget Sound that’s rich in maritime history. There’s a block of old, boarded up buildings downtown, right before the main street meets the water. One of the historic brick buildings is destined to be renovated; the other, which housed the local marine supply shop for over 100 years, will soon be torn down.
When the tourists go home and the town is sleepy and stormy for the dark months, I take advantage of the deserted streets to capture what has been been weathered and worn down by decades of salty sea air.

Back in the Studio...
One of the things I love about collage is creating texture. I add and remove layers of paint, paper, prints, photos, and ink until I find a balance that feels right.
I’ve had a few collages sitting around for a bit that aren’t inspiring me anymore, so have recently been doing some excavating. Here’s an old collage in the middle of being torn up- it’s is now scrambled into all different scraps, and I’m already seeing a new composition with even more texture.
In mid-process- tearing apart another old collage and excavating new ideas!
Thanks for being along for the ride! I appreciate you taking the time to see life through my lens.

Jill

Great photos! I love the peeling paint. Do you print them out and use them in a collage? If so I can’t wait to see what you make with them. 😊
Love peeling paint. So much texture, and so much history!
