future nostalgia
a short story on life and it's oblivion
Sometimes I wonder about the musicians I have forgotten about. The bands that disbanded, the singer-songwriters that do not make music anymore, the groups that grew apart, the musicians that did not manage to make a living out of their music and the musicians that got strangled by the music industry. What will they do now? How do they look back on their careers, on the music they’ve released? Would they do it all again? And are they still proud of the music they made?
We tend to forget about people easily. We move on, sometimes unwittingly. In my life, there’s many people that I have considered to be close friends, for example in high school, at previous jobs or from my youth football team. These are people I spoke to everyday, but who I haven’t seen or talked with for years now. We all went our different ways, lost contact, found new interests and made new friends.
There’s also so many artists I used to love, music I used to listen to. Many of them, I don’t remember anymore. But unlike old friends, I will be more likely to return to songs I used to love on occasion. For nostalgia, for old times sake, because you suddenly remember something, or simply to make fun of my own preferences in music a while ago. However, I rarely ever return to music that I used to love for the sake of discovery, growth or development. In all phases of life I’ve been on a constant search for new music. This of course doesn’t necessarily have to be newly released music, it can be released decades ago. Music I will love today and forget tomorrow. Future nostalgia, as Dua Lipa calls it.
Today I did not wonder about the musicians I have forgotten about, but about the musicians I will forget. As I was listening to Pink Must, the debut album released today by the newly formed duo Pink Must, I embarked on a path of thoughts, questioning if I will remember all the music I listen to these days. Well ehm… I guess probably not… My playlists will disappear, just like my Apple Music library filled with Limewire-downloads has disappeared. I can only hope this Pink Must record remains stuck in some part of my brain for a long time.
An updated version of the playlist ‘some songs for you’ is now live, with many beautiful songs added. This time I’ll not only share the playlist on Spotify but also on Qobuz. For Qobuz-users, there is no option to embed a playlist in here yet, so for now you need to click on the button below. More words on Qobuz coming soon!
