Am I getting old or are people just getting stupider? I'm on a really sweet board on cafemom where we discuss our pregnancies and there seem to be some really nice people on there, but I don't know if it's ignorance, not caring, or just plain stupidity that makes people post some of the things they do!
First of all, did we stop teaching our children how to spell in school?? Or is the texting craze just making everyone lazy and it became accepted to type "ur" instead of "your"???? Now I admit I'm pretty anal about spelling and grammar, but can you blame me when people can't even remember to put an apostrophe in can't??? I'll be reading a sweet and interesting post from an expectant mommy and involuntarily cringe when I see someone refer to a royal throne as a "thrown"! The one I really had to point out was a really cute post about a new puppy the mommy-to-be had just received as a surprise present and she referred to it as her new "edition"! Ummm...did Bobby Brown and his 80's pop group reunite and come to your house or did you get a new "addition" to your family????? I feel like I have Tourette's because of all the involuntary cringing when I read these posts!
As bad as some of those can be, I think the absolute worst is how it seems this next generation is just not educated...at all. I admit to being a late first time mommy-to-be as I'm 33 and now 6 months pregnant with my first child, but I don't consider myself old at all. There are a lot of expectant mothers on this board though who are in their very early 20's who are having their second, third, or even fourth child and the minority in the group are those of us a little bit older whether already mothers or welcoming our first. I remember mandatory reading in junior and high school such as
The Scarlett Letter,
1984,
The Great Gatsby,
The Odyssey, and numerous works by Shakespeare. So when a mommy couldn't remember the famous "movie" where someone uses the pretty name of Stella she was pondering using as name for her unborn daughter I just credited it to a brain fart. We all have them, don't we? I only slightly cringed when she made sure to point out she wasn't thinking of
How Stella Got her Groove Back. I read through a a few posts that had no idea and then I hit upon the near Greek tragedy that almost made me weep. A seemingly intelligent and helpful fellow preggo volunteered that she was absolutely positive it was from that Rocky movie..and then further explained how she remembered Sylvester Stallone calling out the name in the movie.

Do we seriously need any further proof our educational system is completely flawed??? Do we no longer require our kids to read any Tennesee Williams? Or is it our healthcare system that is even more seriously flawed than we thought since obviously a lack of proper eye wear and hearing aids is making people confuse Stallone's "Yo Adrienne!" for Marlon Brando's classic "Stella!"? All strange religious connotations aside, home schooling is suddenly looking like a good option.
