Optimizing Digital Work for Print

Oct. 31st, 2011 | 03:00 pm

Alright guys. I'm going to talk about optimizing your digital work for print. Now, these tips and knowledge are based off of my working for a comic book company and what that company demands of pieces of art that are going to be printed in high volume, in several different countries, while trying to keep things looking consistent from book to book no matter where it was printed. Whether or not you think it'll help your single piece of art transition from screen to print more successfully is up to you, I'm just laying these basic tips out there.

This tutorial is also inclined toward line-based art. Like comics. Cause...that's what I work on. But I feel like it can help anyway.

Before I started working here I had no idea about any of this stuff, AT ALL. So I'm thinking this may help a few folks out there with certain printing frustrations.

I use Photoshop CS5 at work and CS3 at home, both on macs and the screen shots will be from that program. If you use other programs, I am sure they have the same features - I just have no idea where they are. Sorry!

Some/most of this may be old to some folks, but I just want to cover all the bases. But I'm also going on the idea that you have a pretty good understanding of Photoshop. If anything is unclear, drop me a line and I will totally explain anything that doesn't make sense. I'm also going to be making a video in the very near future of exactly what I'm talking about. Because I know I personally learn much easier when watching, rather than reading. So look forward to that!

1. CMYK vs RGB and which Colour Profile/Space to useCollapse )

2. Ink DensityCollapse )

3. K TonesCollapse )

4. Backing (pt 1)Collapse )

4. Backing (pt 2)Collapse )

And there you have it. This should make your prints come out closer to what you see on the screen. I hope it helped! And again, if you have any questions or if anything was unclear, just ask. I've never really done something like this before, so I'm hoping it wasn't TOO confusing.

I participated in a march for choice today, in support of planned parenthood. Had a fabulous sign that got some attention and had a good time walking around downtown yelling out things like sex and penis. Fun times had all around. At the very end of the march though, we were walking down the side walk while a rally to support the protesters in Libya where walking toward us.

I'm going "Uh-oh" wonderin how this is gonna pan out. We ended up passing each other in opposite directions with high-fives all around, like at the end of a baseball game or something and everyone is just high-fiving each other. We were screaming "LIBYA!" and they were screaming "PRO CHOICE" and it was fantastic. With our march coming to an end, the more robust go-getter protesters went on to carry on with the Libyan camp. I myself grabbed an iced mocha to assuage my aching throat, and headed home.

We probably ended up walking at least 4-5 miles. I was dead tired by the end of it, that's for sure. But it was great. And totally worth it.

Writer's Block: News development

Mar. 21st, 2010 | 09:59 am

What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

The Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995 was the first big news event I remember happening. I was 7 years old. I remember seeing the aftermath of it on the television one night right before dinner. I didn't understand it though. I just remember realizing that there had been kids my age in the daycare in that building and they would never be able to go home.

Writer's Block: Leftovers of leftovers

What's the most unusual food you have ever eaten? Have you ever consumed anything without knowing precisely what it was and gotten sick when you found out?

Dog. I've likely eaten dog before. I lived on an island near Guam when I was 6 months to 4 years old. My baby-sitter raised dogs like some people raise chickens. And seeing as I ate various meals there, including dinner - it is likely I've eaten dog.

In fact, my dog was stolen out of our front yard and likely eaten himself, since he was well fed and taken care of. Living on a tropical island = not all it's cracked up to be.

Writer's Block: Take this job and shove it ...

Dec. 16th, 2009 | 10:53 pm

Have you ever walked off a job on the spot? What drove you to it? Did you regret it afterwards?
I did. I was working at Wendy's and had been for 1 month shy of a year when they refused to give me time off to let me go see my sisters Graduation. I walked off the job right then and there. Never regretted it for an instant. Jobs come and go, but family is here to stay.

Writer's Block: I get by with a little help from my MAC

How do you use your PC to achieve your goals and dreams?

I don't. After a year and half of use, my PC crushed all my goals and dreams when it crashed epically, taking all of my files, music, and images with it in a fiery death ball of pain and anguish. I lost everything.

I have a mac now (and an external hard drive), going on two years and no fiery death ball in sight.

Woop, forgot to mention it here. There's a preview of a page of the comic up on my blog. It's just the inks, but also included is the process I went through to get to the final inks. Go check it out. Like... now.

Writer's Block: Family Heirlooms

Jul. 19th, 2009 | 11:55 am

Is there anything in your family that has been passed down from generation to generation, or from family member to family member? What is it? And who do you plan to pass it on to?

It's not an item, it's a name. The middle name Anne has been passed down to the first born daughters of my family from my great-grandmother to my grandmother, and then my mother. The name Anne was incorporated into my first name, but I'll give it to my first daughter as her middle name.

Dream a Dream

I had some weird dreams last night. The first one isn't freaky, more just... weird.

Dream OneCollapse )

My second dream was a little more freaky.

Dream TwoCollapse )
Freaky man, freaky. Writing that out I realize the second dream could be taken for so many different things and interpreted in a certain way and it's freaking me out a little bit.
