Sun Microsystems got a lot of attention a few months ago for making the bulk of its implementation of Java available under the GNU General Public License. However, I just tried installing sun-java6-plugin and sun-java6-jre (which expected me to agree to the “sun-dlj-v1-1” license) from Debian unstable (where these packages are listed as “non-free”).
So far, I've found some binary packages on Sun's site, but they seem to be oriented toward Red Hat and SUSE. I don't know if I'll have a problem with them in Debian.
Is Debian simply running behind? Where would I find a Debian friendly, GPLed version?
