Okay, so what is this plant? I thought it was a privet, but now it's putting out all these little white flowers and when I looked up privets, the leaves look very different. This is very clearly intentionally planted (I have 3 of them along a fence), grows fast (I've already trimmed it back once, and it looks like it's been trimmed to the ground a few times), but otherwise it seems fairly harmless. I mostly care about this because I want to know if it's going to have berries or anything that's poisonous to the dog!

Here is a picture:

Fits me, so good for me-sized people.

Riding boots / half chaps:

I haven't ridden in about...2-3 years, so I'm thinking these should go somewhere else if there's someone who wants it.
14 years ago, I became allergic to a large number of foods, including chocolate. 3 years ago, I stopped being able eat any chocolate at all.

For me, Valentine's Day is no longer about cheesy romance. Valentine's Day is the 2-3 week period when I get to feel sad about how I can't have chocolate. There are cheesy red boxes and fancy wrapping and large pink and red hearts and...they are all full of poison. I didn't even like that stuff all that much when I could eat chocolate, but tastes change, especially if you can't have any.

For the last two years, this took me by surprise and without white chocolate resources to make myself feel better. This year, I was smart enough to pre-order from my local chocolatier, the one person who has made the chocolate allergy bearable. When you love chocolate but can't have it, you become really picky about the white chocolate options out there. So far, Ariel's is the only chocolates that make me forget that I can't have the "real" stuff. Hotel Chocolat consoles me when I can't get Ariel's stuff, and Godiva frustrates me more than it helps because they often have "white chocolate" offerings that include a sprinkling of chocolate, or a thin shell of dark chocolate, or something else that makes it Just Not Work. But Ariel's chocolates are consistently good and inventive and delicious.

Thank you Ariel, for making my Valentine's Day special.

More in a different post, but I have a free desk (4 x 2 feet) to give away:

Has a nice keyboard tray, two drawers, and is otherwise sturdy particle board. (I had a 3-shelf bookshelf on it for a while, as well as other shelves and my monitor, etc.

Let me know if you're interested; it's getting curbed next Sunday if no one grabs it. (PS, do the trash people take 4 foot x 2 foot particle board desks?

Does anyone here use Renu contact lens solution? I recently switched contacts and my eye doctor suggested I use a different contact lens solution with this brand of contacts. So now I have a stash of Renu (some unopened, some big bottles, some travel-size bottles) that are useless for me.

Does anyone want it?

Also, I have a big bottle of vitamins that turns out to be too big for me to swallow. :-( But it's like the "regular size" of vitamins. It's marketed to women but I think all that means is that it has more calcium. Anyone want that?

So far....

Today is nice out, almost like it didn't snow all last night.

PS - Bought Scribblenauts, it's currently really fun. So far I have summoned "Mom" and "A black hole". Turns out the black hole does not actually destroy the whole level, but destroys enough that you have to start over.

Fun suggestions for things to summon welcomed!

PPS - Bought Brutal Legends at the same time; amused myself by thinking about how incongruous that was. What do you think are the two most incongruous games to buy together?

Preference to my housemates but other than that, I want it to go away as quickly as possible since it's kind of in the way right now.

Any takers? :-)</strike> Claimed!

Yesterday I got a smaller laundry setup and cleared out a whole section of my room today with the bookshelf removal and the laundry replacement. Other than the mounds of crap there, it's looking really good!
So now that I have a salary and a full time job, I have been considering charities. I probably should have considered this earlier but I always felt so strapped for cash that I decided to just put off the decision until I had money.

A few days ago I decided that 1% of my pre-tax income was a reasonable amount to set aside for charitable giving. What charities do you give to? Do you have any particular recommendations for me?

I'm most interested in issues of social justice, health, poverty, and education (internationally and within the US), but I'm also interested in hearing about work in other areas.
