There had really only been one thing constant in Jess' life for some years now. He had always had a tendency to not keep himself stuck in one place for very long, even if it meant getting in to trouble to achieve it. Despite most thinking he was a broody, pain in the ass teenager, Jess knew it was just because he had more to offer and getting stuck in a place like Stars Hollow with his uncle and a whole other bunch of close-minded freaks wasn't going to get him anywhere.
Until he met Rory Gilmore.
Rory changed his life, and even to this day, he doubted she knew that. He had tried to tell her. So, so many times he tried, but the words always choked up on the tip of his tongue and led her to believe he was just a dick, a waste of her time. And he probably was back then. He didn't give her all that much to work with and he knew that. Easier said than done, though. By that point, he just figured there was no use trying because he stuffed it up so badly, so he just ran away. He was a stupid teenager; he could admit to that now. That was probably the basis of his whole choice to turn the car in the direction of Stars Hollow two years after he left the place and didn't look back. It was easy to kid himself, really. Easy to convince himself he didn't miss the place, and didn't miss her.
Truth was, Rory was the only constant in Jess' life, and he missed her. If nothing else, she was the only one he cared about celebrating his book with. He knew she would be happy for him and that his pride in the one thing he always wanted to achieve for himself becoming a reality.
... if nothing else.
