{"id":12779,"date":"2017-07-31T05:55:54","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T12:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ivanmisner.com\/?p=12779"},"modified":"2017-08-15T09:41:55","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T16:41:55","slug":"space-violator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ivanmisner.com\/space-violator\/","title":{"rendered":"The Space Violator"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Desperation is not referable<\/h3>\n<p>When people demonstrate certain behaviors as part of their networking efforts, it\u2019s a tell-tale sign of desperation.\u00a0 There are four types of behaviors that desperate networkers exhibit. \u201cThe Space Violator\u201d is the second of these four \u201cdesperate networker behaviors\u201d that I\u2019ll be sharing over the next weeks.<\/p>\n<h3>The Space Violator<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s the guy that thinks the closer he gets when he\u2019s talking to you, the more you\u2019ll be interested in what he\u2019s saying. Nope.\u00a0 Not true.\u00a0 In fact, it has the opposite effect (especially if his breath has the aroma of a smelly camel). \u00a0So, what\u2019s the right distance to stand from someone without getting into their personal space?\u00a0 The answer to this question varies based on the cultural standards of the country you are in.\u00a0 In North America, it\u2019s fairly common to have conversations at roughly \u201carm\u2019s length\u201d for people that you meet at a networking event.\u00a0 From my experience, that distance is definitely less in some countries around the world.\u00a0 What\u2019s also interesting is the issue of gender and personal space or \u201cproxemics.\u201d\u00a0 According to a \u201cJournal of Psychology\u201d study, \u201cmale-male pairs tend to interact at greater personal distances, whereas female-female pairs tend to interact closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember this behavior when you go to networking events and whatever you do \u2013 don\u2019t demonstrate \u201cThe Space Violator\u201d behavior yourself.\u00a0 Remember that networking is more about farming than it is about hunting.
