Noir - Dark Mode for Safari
Browse better at night
$2.99
Noir is a Safari extension that automatically adds a dark mode to every website you visit.
It makes browsing the web at night so much better. With Noir, you won’t be blinded by bright websites ever again.
And the results look great too. Noir generates a custom dark style for each website you visit, based on the colors that are used on a page. You won’t even notice this happening in the background – that’s how fast it is – but you’ll certainly appreciate the end result: a beautiful dark mode tailored for each website, where contrast is preserved and highlights still pop. And with over 20 built-in themes and the ability to create your own, you can customize the results exactly the way you want.
Noir works with any website you visit in Safari, automatically. By default, Noir is linked to your device’s Dark Mode, so websites will only go dark when you want them to. But you can easily customize this to your liking, even per website. Only want to use Noir on just a few specific websites? Sure thing! Disable Noir on some websites? No problem!
Built from the ground up for iOS and iPadOS, the app feels right at home on your device. It supports the brand new Safari web extension feature, which means there’s no need to manually activate it every time you load a new page. The app also tightly integrates with system features such as Shortcuts, Control Center, Focus Filters, and Widgets to fully integrate Noir in all your workflows. And your settings are automatically synced to all your devices using iCloud.
And just as importantly, Noir takes your privacy seriously: it doesn’t collect any of your browsing data. Period.
Noir is made by an indie iOS developer. It does not include any subscriptions or ads. Buy Noir once, use it forever.
Notes:
• Found a website where Noir’s dark mode doesn’t look just right? Let me know by reporting it. The app will be frequently updated to address issues that are reported.
Privacy Policy:
• The Noir extension requires access to the websites you visit to analyze the existing style of the page and to override it with Noir's dark style.
• Noir never collects your browsing data. The only data Noir ‘collects’ are your settings, and those will never leave your device or iCloud account.
• You can read Noir’s full Privacy Policy at https://getnoir.app/privacypolicy
more I was using one for years that worked pretty well but the dev did minimal updates and it started having a ton of issues.. been using Noir for many months now and it seems much better so far and you can tell the developer takes pride in their work, happy to see frequent improvements over time that add useful features and fix bugs. Most importantly the dark theme it generates for websites look excellent and nearly native, without big slowdowns and crashes that I’ve experienced with others. The only minor issue has been that it falsely detects native dark modes sometimes, but I see a reporting tool has been added and it’s easy to override this as well. Lastly I’ll mention the interface is attractive and simple within safari and has some advanced features I’ll definitely make use of, great work! Highly recommended.
Developer Response Thank you so much for your kind review! I'm glad you like Noir and the updates!

Pros. I haven’t found a website it won’t tint! The setup and customization is easy & makes sense. Con’s. This app may be limited to users seeking high customizability & who want to tint websites without loosing their individual aesthetics. After following the setup prompts to the T I’ve found safari to be running much slower. Some visual & functional elements can get blocked which also seems to exacerbate the slowdown. I find that on websites with custom scrolling behaviors, moving art & transitions that at times this app just covers much of that that in the background color but isn’t able to effectively tint the type in order to make it legible. I find I’m constantly turning it off to let websites load images and content, or sometimes when using Shopify stores being unable to click store buttons when it is enabled. Also as it doesn’t have an option to tint web links I find it just makes search engine results feel more cluttered as links are still bright blue instead of the desired theme. I may be more picky than most when it comes to these things. Overall one of the better dark screen options for safari on iPhone. I’m glad this was less than $5 and think it has value at the price just don’t expect pure magic. Thanks for making this app :)
Developer Response Sounds like there’s something in your specific setup that’s causing some issues that don’t usually happen. If you reach out to me at jeffrey@getnoir.app I can look into it for you!Link colors are still darkened, but if they use a bright color in the original theme, you may still see some of that in Noir’s theme. If you enable advanced appearance options, you’ll be able to disable dynamic colors, which causes text and links to always be in the exact color you specified in your theme.

I purchased the Noir app for my iPhone and iPad immediately after Apple launched iOS 15 and I have been very happy with it. About a month ago, I bought my first Macbook . One of the first things I did while setting up my laptop was attempt to restore Noir to Safari from my iPhone/iPad to the Macbook. I figured it would be a simple process, especially because of Apple’s integration of iOS apps with the M1 Macs. Unfortunately, it quickly became obvious that if I wanted Noir on my Macbook, I would have to buy it again. I don’t have alot of money and It took me a year to save up for the Macbook so this was a disappointment. I have not purchased Noir for my Macbook yet and I probably won’t, simply because I can’t afford it nor can I justify the expense to myself. I already bought it. I’ll be looking into alternatives, but I am fairly sure that no other option will compare to Noir. Still, I can’t afford it. Just because I own a Macbook Air doesn’t mean I have cash to spare in order to buy something I already purchased. If this is not the appropriate place to bring this issue up, I’m sorry, I mean no harm.

I was looking through “Safari Extensions” one day as I never really used them before, then came along ‘Noir’. The $1.99 (give or take $1) sort of made me think if it was worth paying, but I gave it a whirl. While I personally only have issues on the sights that contain vivid white imagery to convey their UI, other sites work marvelously with Noir. I, a student, find this also a cheeky way to “hide” what I’m reading from other classmates because some can snoop and as I’m the only one with the iPad it’s sorta awkward. My favorite feature is when you’re editing a theme you get a random Noir-related news company with a newspaper style story about the theme. Haha, what a nice touch! It just refreshes whenever the control center is toggled I’ve found. Sorta wish it was a system wide feature but that is beyond any iOS app capability. Color Filters work best with other apps.

This update of Noir brings a whole range of new website fixes and improvements. For iPad users, it also improves the detection of the compact tab bar, which is unfortunately still broken on the latest version of iPadOS.
Thank you all so much for submitting your website reports! These help a ton with improving Noir for everyone.
If you enjoy using Noir, please consider leaving a review for the app on the App Store! It really helps spread the word, and I would appreciate it a lot.

The latest update of iPadOS, iPadOS 26.4, brings back a Safari feature: compact tab bar. Unfortunately, it contains a bug that causes Safari to crash when you try to open the Noir menu (or any other extension).
With this update, Noir now detects when you have the compact tab bar enabled, and if so, shows a warning when you try to open the Noir menu. Changing back your setting to the default separate tab bar will restore the Noir menu again.
I'm really sorry about this. Unfortunately the crash is inside iPadOS, and beyond my control. I hope the bug gets fixed soon. If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to me through the Contact Support button inside the Noir app.
If you enjoy using Noir, please consider leaving a review for the app on the App Store! It really helps spread the word!
Jeffrey
PS: If you're on iPhone, this doesn't affect you, as the bug is iPad-only.
2026.1.2 Mar 25
Hi there! I'm happy to introduce the latest version of Noir. If you enjoy Noir, please consider leaving a review for the app on the App Store!
# Advanced Appearance Options
Noir now includes new advanced appearance options that let you fine-tune how Noir's dark theme looks on a website. You can disable dynamic colors, hide all background images, and disable image inversion. To keep Noir as simple as possible for users who don't need these options, you first have to enable these new options in the Advanced Settings inside the Noir app. After that, you can adjust these settings for any website from the Noir menu in Safari. And of course, all changes you make will automatically be synced with all your devices using iCloud.
For more information about the available options, see “About advanced appearance options” in the Noir app.
# Report incorrectly detected built-in dark modes
You can now report incorrectly detected built-in dark modes directly from the Noir menu in Safari. You can choose to send reports automatically, be asked each time, or never send reports at all. Reports you send will be used to improve Noir for all users.
# Improved instructions for new users
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already set up the Noir extension. But for new users, the onboarding has been improved to help people get started with Noir as quickly and as easily as possible.
# Website fixes & improvements
As always, this update also includes many fixes and improvements based on the website reports that you have sent in. Thank you so much for helping me make Noir as good as possible!
- 2026.1.1: More website fixes and improvements
Thank you so much for using Noir! As mentioned, please consider leaving a review for Noir in the App Store. It really helps spread the word!
When developing Noir, I always try to balance keeping the app simple for new users while making it powerful enough for more advanced users. The new advanced appearance options offer more ways than ever to tweak Noir’s dark theme. If you’re a power user of Noir (or an aspiring one!), I hope you’ll enjoy them, without making the app unnecessarily complex for everyone else. Your feedback is always appreciated!

You can now quickly enable or disable Noir right from your Control Center. Configuring Noir has never been easier.
# Dark and Tinted Icons and Widgets
All of Noir's icons and widgets now work with the new Home Screen customization features of iOS and iPadOS. Noir will fit right in on any Home Screen.
# New App Icon
To allow you to customize your Home Screen even further to your liking, there's a new 'Simple' icon for Noir. You can change your icon from the More tab.
# New Theme
There's a new theme available in the Theme Library, based on the popular (code) editor theme gruvbox.
In order to use many of these new features, make sure you update to the latest version of iOS.
Noir is made by just one person (hi!). Thank you so much for all your support throughout the years. If you can, please consider leaving a review of Noir in the App Store or telling your friends about the app. Both really help a lot. Thanks!

2024.3 09/16/2024
This update of Noir brings a whole range of new website fixes and improvements. For iPad users, it also improves the detection of the compact tab bar, which is unfortunately still broken on the latest version of iPadOS.
Thank you all so much for submitting your website reports! These help a ton with improving Noir for everyone.
If you enjoy using Noir, please consider leaving a review for the app on the App Store! It really helps spread the word, and I would appreciate it a lot.
