This is a Sungkyunkwan Scandal Pimp Post: 7 Reasons Why You Should Watch It

Girl cross-dresses to get into an all-boys school and/or join a rock band for the sake of a man. Sound familiar? Sungkyunkwan Scandal has been likened to trendy dramas like Boys Over Flowers (for the boys) and You’re Beautiful (for the cross-dressing). I’d say the premise is typical—think Hana Kimi saeguk-style—but that’s not what SKK is all about.

Although the drama’s ratings aren’t sky high, they’re steadily going up and I’ve got a strong feeling they’ll continue to do so. Why? Because SKK is too good a drama to pass up. It’s not reaching epic proportions for me yet but I’m pretty sure it’s headed there and I’m excited to be there when it happens. If you’re not watching SKK yet, there's no better time! You won't regret it. There are pretty boys, yes, but SKK is more than Song Joongki’s lovely face (and Yooh Ah In’s charisma—he was already awesome before this, but who knew he could do rough and sexy so well?). There’s so much to love about this drama. Let me start you off with seven reasons. You’ll find more as you watch the drama, I swear.

A few notes before we begin…

The Premise: Kim Yoonhee’s (Park Min Young) brother is ill and so she lives a double life as a maiden and a male scribe to earn a little bit of money. When an unpaid family debt pushes her into an unwanted coupling, Lee Sunjoon (Micky Yoochun), a minister’s son, gives her an unexpected opportunity that allows her to get into the prestigious Sungkyunkwan University—as a boy, of course. Much hilarity, romance, and political games ensue.

The Main Characters:

Micky Yoochun as Lee Sunjoon, the highly principled but stuffy scholar
Park Min Young as Kim Yoonhee, the plucky heroine disguised as a boy
Song Joong Ki as Goo Yongha, the mysterious smiling playboy
Yoo Ah In as Moon Jaeshin, the scruffy but hot man who came out of nowhere

Onto the list. Why should you watch SKK? Let me count the ways...

1. The lead guy is not a jerk.

Morals...he has them. :|

My main problem with a lot of k-dramas (which also usually triggers my second lead syndrome) is that the lead guys are jerks. Meanies. Bullies. Let’s take Goong, for example, where the ice prince doesn’t even do anything for the lead girl until it’s almost the last episode—and she just blindly follows him for the entire series. Prince Yul might have been the bad guy (and, boy, he did some bad things) but he was the girl’s shoulder to cry on and always picked up the pieces. Why can't the nice guy get the girl?

Lee Sunjoon, on the other hand, sticks to his morals so much that he gets ridiculed and bullied—for standing for what he believes in! Does he get back at them? Besides proving their words wrong (with pithy statements of his own) and striving to become even more moral, uh, no. He’s a really idealistic character who believes in fairness and equality, and this shows in how he constantly helps our female protagonist using his principles as a shield for his good deeds (don’t worry, Yoonhee uses this reason right back at him!).

But there’s more! Romantic subplots aside, Lee Sunjoon is just an interesting character in general. I’ll be the first to say I wasn’t impressed with Park Yoochun’s acting in the first episode, but as I started watching more of SKK, I saw some definite signs of improvement. More importantly, I began to understand Lee Sunjoon. Lee Sunjoon is a man of principles, but it’s for the same reason that he appears so innocent. I find his dedication (*cough* stubbornness) when it comes to what he believes in very admirable. At the same time, this makes me want to pat him on the back for ‘not knowing much about the real world, son’. I can almost see Sunjoon shaking his head at me for saying that.

2. The lead girl is not a damsel in distress.

She may not look like it but this gal's got balls.

A female lead that I can admire and root for from the start? That’s Yoonhee for you. She’s smart, she’s resourceful, she’s brave, and she’s family-oriented. Yet she wants to do something for herself too—you see her warring with herself a lot of the time. In a way, she’s just as principled as Sunjoon, just a lot more practical—well, she has experience. This is evident in the way she doesn’t refuse the king’s royal edict. She accepts it as something that has to be done and even uses it as part of her argument with her mother for letting her go to Sungkyunkwan.

In order to really understand how cool Yoonhee is, you just have to think about it: pretending to be a boy and entering university in the Joseon era is a serious crime. This isn’t the modern times where the worst that can happen is she gets expelled and the lead guy doesn’t want to see her ever again. She can die.

But, anyway, what I really find awesome about her is that she doesn’t allow herself to get stepped on. She’s learning, and a lot of the time she ends up confused (just like Sunjoon!), but that’s what makes her progress so much more fun to watch.

3. Great casting. The side characters all shine in their roles!

I cry under my skin too, Kang Sung Pil. :'D

Even Yoonhee’s family makes me want to root for them. Cho Sun who’s so awesome you can’t help but love her. And all of Ha In Soo’s lackeys are so goddamn funny (Kang Sung Pil of Queen Seon Deok is just hilarious!). Even the bit characters have a lot to play with and the tiny glimpses you get of their characters makes you want to see more of them. Did I mention Sunjoon’s dad (played by Kim Gab Soo from Cinderella’s Sister) is one of my favorite older Korean actors?

4. I cu second lead syndrome.

It's raining Joongki! Where? Where?

Can we just take a moment to praise Song Joongki for his awesome portrayal of Yongha who’s pretty much the ultimate flower boy. He’s so goddamn mysterious, though, that you can’t help reading into everything he says. Behind those smiles is a hidden agenda and possibly a troubled past. I have a feeling he’ll make my heart break in more ways than one.

Um. Unf.

Also. Yooh Ah In. I can’t believe my Antique Bakery boy has turned into this hot gruff man. I didn’t know he had it in him! My spazzing aside, Jaeshin is the character everyone’s secretly (or not so secretly) rooting for. Although no one really hates Sunjoon, Jaeshin’s “I’m rough but I’m inwardly a softie, please don’t break my heart” persona is a pretty tough act to follow. You can tell he breathed life into the first episode as soon as he appeared. Charisma. Boy knows how to work it. Coupled with an awesome background song (Kim Junsu’s Too Love; so deceptively happy in beat but the words are so heartbreaking) and general badassery, Jaeshin’s out to take everyone’s hearts. I’m just waiting for the inevitable tears when, wonder of wonders, duh, the second lead doesn’t get the girl.

Note to self: Make Yongha and Jaeshin picspams in the future.

5. I can get behind the OTP. Yes, I can!

"Thanks for saving my life. Not. Where's my money, you jerk!"

Although my second lead syndrome certainly feels for Jaeshin, SKK’s OTP is so believable I find myself wanting to get behind them too. Usually, drama OTPs make me puke and sadface because I don't understand how the most incompatible people in the world get paired up together...especially when the girl deserves so much better. Anyway, I love Sunjoon and Yoonhee’s dynamic. Their banter is precious and neither of them ever gives in—except they secretly do! They help each other and complement each other’s faults. Plus, they’re also quite similar although they'll never admit it, I bet. I don’t know, there’s just something about their combined industriousness and determination that tickles my fancy. As a couple, they stabilize each other.

6. There’s a plot! They have awesome lines!

This isn’t your typical romantic comedy! It’s about women empowerment, morals, and family values. There’s also a larger political plot to worry about. I love how the story just keeps building and building up. It’s only a matter of time before the shit hits the fan—and we’re all going to be glued to our screens watching every moment.

7. Killer soundtrack.

I could say a lot more about about the drama but the OST...it just works, man. I love OSTs so much and SKK’s didn’t disappoint me. Even the instrumentals are beautiful. They make me giddy or sad at the appropriate moments. It’s gotten to that point where I actually considered buying the OST. But that’s just me. I am obviously obsessed. ): I'll discuss SKK's low points when I'm done fangirling about it.

Drama Review: Heading to the Ground Episode 2

Hey, I think I might be able to get behind you, OTP.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.

Guys, I take it back. Watch Heading to the Ground. Never mind that yucky opening scene in Episode 1. Episode 2 actually had me wanting to watch more. Now.

Plot Recap: So, last time, I was so busy whining about the opening scene that I didn't really get to discuss the plot much. Quick summary. Cha Bong Goon (Jung Yunho) is your standard kind-hearted, somewhat brusque, stupid hero. He's a soccer player with a short temper and childish manner who means well but always ends up failing. After his soccer team gets dissolved, he feels so dejected that he decides to quit soccer forever. Kang Hae Bin (Go Ah Ra) is a fragile, pretty girl who intends to make a name for herself as a sports agent in a male-dominated field. What happens when these two meet?

Episode 2: When we left off, Bong Goon was trying to make a living as a chicken stick vendor and ends up helping a dejected, shoeless Hae Bin under a rainy sky (cliche but cute and believable). In Episode 2, Hae Bin chases after Bong Goon, intending to become his agent so that star agent Hong Sang Man will allow her to become his job partner. Hilarity ensues. Some scenes to watch out for are Bong Goon dancing in a chicken mascot costume (Yunho, I love you!), Hae Bin getting drunk (and of course, having to be looked after by Bong Goon), and Bong Goon's soccer tryouts.

Yep, virtually unlikeable.

Acting-wise, Yunho's awkward overacting waters down into something much more believable: cute and awkward as his character requires but no longer painfully exaggerated, simple when it comes to being emo and dejected. I notice, he only brings out his childish side when he's with friend Oh Yeon Yi (Lee Yoon Ji) but even that has been toned down to something that makes you want to 'D'awww' instead of attack him with a spork. Things are looking up.

Yoon Ji and Yunho kind of make me want them to become OTP.

All in all, I was laughing openly and feeling all fluttery as a romantic comedy ought to make you feel. Love, love Park Chul Min who plays the arrogant lead sports agent. Yes, he's that coughing, trumpet-playing guy from Beethoven Virus and he adds that little touch of offbeat humor that every drama like this needs. And Kim Jae Sung (from Shining Inheritance!) who plays Lee Dong Ho, a rival soccer player, is another colorful side character.

Verdict: So what makes this drama worth watching? Simply put, it's charming. I can't even quite put my finger on it. It's so easygoing and well-paced and Yunho's so genuine (/dies, I can't find another word for it) that you can't help but grow fond of his character as it goes along. You want him to succeed, rofl. Once I got over Ah Ra's prettiness, I began to accept more of her character, as well. The drama's OTP has potential. Episode 2 is definitely a step-up from the HOMG AWKWARD first half of the drama's first episode and the preview promises more interesting developments. It's sweet, it's just the right amount of corny. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Drama Review: Heading to the Ground Episode 1

Yunho can't believe it, too

Minor Spoilers Ahead.

Let's get one thing straight. I had low expectations of Heading to the Ground but I still didn't expect it to be this bad. Guys, I am a k-drama addict. You've seen me in action. I am the girl who sticks to dramas until the end despite them being boring or losing steam after a few episodes. It's like my code. If I start, I have to finish and I can't help hoping that somewhere along the way, if a drama sucks, it will try to redeem itself (sometimes, they do).

But this, I wanted to turn off completely, at the first scene. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I felt so bad I wanted to hide into a hole from secondhand embarrassment and started killing the director and scriptwriter in my head (despite the overacting, Yunho's really honestly just trying so hard to do well that I can't seem to hate him). Yunho's weakness in acting before has already been his tendency to overact and exaggerate. And, boy, his character here just EMPHASIZES this, omigod. I suddenly wish they had made him a businessman. Because Yunho's simple expressions (read: when he isn't making his dorky Yunho faces, Yunho, I love you, okay;;), the emotion comes across well. And, he's very likable and earnest.

Still, I swear, I stopped watching for a bit and then rewatched DBSK's old banjun drama Dangerous Love to make myself laugh. I actually thought he acted more naturally then and we all know banjun isn't srs biznes.

Anyway, I went back to watching because I felt so bad for Yunho I decided I'd give the drama a chance. Go Ah Ra, the lead actress, is pretty mediocre in this episode (although she cries well) and rather bland despite her pretty face. Yoonji, the other girl, is remarkably more dynamic and warm. I'm feeling their chemistry more than YunhoxAh Ra and the CPR scene was awkwardly adorable. I have to say, though, that Yunho and Ah Ra's epic cliche meeting scene was really cute. And I think I might grow to like their pairing as it goes along. Music becomes catchier the more you listen to it.

Verdict: Half the audience probably switched channels after seeing the horrendous, low budget and very awkward opening scene (let's not even mention what it was, go see for yourself). But stick with it for at least thirty minutes more and you'll finally progress from cringing from secondhand embarrassment to watching with a twitching smile on your mouth. After resting my head, I rewatched the entire episode and realized it wasn't as bad as I thought it was (I think the opening scene stalled my brain for a while there). The preview for Episode 2 looks really interesting and made me feel all fluttery. I'm going to keep watching. I'm putting stock in the cast improving as a whole and, hopefully, Yunho will ease on the overacting a little (Yunho, just stop listening to the director and be more natural, okay). The ratings might look low (around 7, dropped to 5, I think) to some but it's a good steady start seeing what dramas it's up against (the other two are at around 14 each).

(P.S. There are photos floating around of Yunho in hospital clothes at a shooting. They're saying it's a mental hospital. With his character in this drama, omigod, that might actually work for the better.;;)

Oh, hi. I'm still alive. Small batch. <.<; I saw the GQ scans and I had to icon a bit. Sorry for the lack of Yunho. Every time I cropped his pictures, it ended up looking weird. Belle's Top 20 Asian Drama Actors; #6 - Jang Geun Suk

Sorry, guys. I keep procrastinating on this list. I swear, when I go online everyday I think of posting Guy No. 6 but I somehow always end up putting it off (so hard to find recent photos of him *probably looking at the wrong places*). And I can't move on to the Top 5 without posting Guy No. 6. *hyperventilates* Here's to me finally getting to it. <.<;

Age: 22 (Korea), 21 (International)
Profession: Actor/singer
Nationality: Korean
Height: 182cm
Charm Points: Hides firm muscle under his seemingly too slender body. Nice, solid singing voice (just don't do the M-Net Korean Music Festival again, rofl). The ability to make everyone forget how hideous his fashion style is when he turns on his smile (and melts hearts). Clean, boyish looks one second...rough and tumble the next. Pretty lips. That calm, soothing aura that makes people break out into grins...when they didn't even mean to.
The Magic of Jang Geun Suk: His charm really lies in his likability (and, I admit, his infectious smiles). You don't notice him at first. You think he's ordinary. But then you eventually realize you're looking out for his rare smiles and are listening closely to whatever his character is saying. When he's the villain, you try your best to hate him but you end up falling in love with his character instead. When he's the lovable but doomed other-guy, you find yourself wishing he got the girl. I've seen him do emo prince, I've seen him do guy-next-door and he's equally proficient in both.
You've Probably Seen Him In: That recently concluded and unexpected high-rating drama, Beethoven Virus. He plays a genius music student turned policeman who ends up rediscovering his love for the trumpet...and conducting. His character here is friendly, determined, earnest, and charismatic. People tend to gravitate toward him in the story and with good reason. Watch it for the warm, fuzzy feelings (and the eventual bittersweet drama -- the plot is engaging!) Geunsukkie's character generates. And Geunsukkie's flail!phail (his arms are everywhere 0_0) at conducting.
You Should Check Him Out In: That drama that's really high on my recommended list, Hong Gil Dong, which tells a Robin Hood-like story. It's a fusion period drama so expect crack and fun in between romance, comedy, and action. This is the drama that made me really look at Geunsukkie. He plays Emo Prince (capitals!) Chang Hwi, younger son of the late king and legitimate heir to the throne. He's on a quest against the current government to claim his throne. Say hello to longhair!Geun Suk and his subtle acting, which fits in with the restrained, sad, but comfort-seeking prince he plays. Let's not forget that wonderful period drama that got him noticed, Hwang Jin Yi, where he plays the heroine's first love. His part in this is quite heartbreaking. For the movie fans, I'm sure you've already heard of Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. The plot meandered a bit for me (a lot of people seem to have loved it, though XD) but watch it to hear Geunsukkie singing beautifully.
Why He's On My List: Geunsukkie is one of the wild card entries in my Top 20. He started at the bottom of my list but every time I decided to put him at a certain number, I'd take another look and move him up a notch or two. And suddenly he got to the Top 6 position.

The Magic of Hyun Bin: One word: hawt. No, seriously. Whenever Hyun Bin's on screen, it's like the drama is burning (in a good way XD). His image has made a turn around since Kim Sam Soon (more on that later). I thought he was brilliant there. But, apparently, I'd only seen the edges of Hyun Bin's drama magic. He just keeps getting better all the time.
You've Probably Seen Him In: What else but the drama that catapulted him into the limelight, My Name is Kim Sam Soon? ;) Hyun Bin plays an arrogant but kind restaurant owner. He hires Sam Soon, a spunky woman (weirdly enough called fat by the people around her 0_0) to become a baker at his restaurant. This is where their curious love-hate relationship begins. This is a really fun romantic comedy with its angsty and dramatic moments. I highly suggest you watch it if only to get inside Sam Soon's head. The things she dreams up. XD
You Should Check Him Out In: As if being a charismatic and handsome corporate man was not enough, Hyun Bin does a complete turn around in Snow Queen (highly recommended!) and gives us Tae Woong, a genius of a student, who after a series of sad events in his life, ends up as a scruffy and angst-ridden boxer. Saying goodbye to his clean-cut image, Hyun Bin turns into a rough, smexy man. The story itself is beautiful, sad, and absorbing with heartrending references to the fairy tale Snow Queen. I can't really express the beauty of this drama in words. It's a drama, all right, and you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen no matter how depressing it gets. This is a story of love, loss, and discovery that won't disappoint you. It really made me appreciate Hyun Bin's acting prowess more. And this was also when I started loving actress Sung Yu Ri (yes, that adorable Yi Nok from Hong Gil Dong). Their chemistry is scalding. His recent drama The World That They Live In is also worth looking into, yes, yes.
Why He's On My List: He just can't miss. He's got that smexy afdfhdjhfdjghdfj;; look going for him, his amazing acting skills, and he keeps picking interesting roles.

Belle's Top 20 Asian Drama Actors; #8 - Ikuta Toma

Charm Points: His signature angst!pose with the strong eyebrows and heart-melting glare. Match this with his high-bridged nose and angular jawline...and you have a winner. His ability to be ab-so-lute-ly dorky and still be hawt at the same time. Also, his ability to look normal and hawt at the same time. Did I mention his manly boyishness (if that makes sense, rofl)? Beautiful full-toothed smile that is so infectious. If only he'd use it even more in his photoshoots. He's also just extremely likable. He can't help it. XD
The Magic of Ikuta Toma: I admit, I had never heard of him before until I watched Hana Kimi - Japan and after that, I was caught in his trap. And I knew I wouldn't be able to escape. Toma's drama magic can't really be explained without mentioning Hana Kimi. To me, at least, he was basically the star of the show with his hugely adorkable and playful Nakatsu. His inner!voice antics killed me every time and I swear, the cute and funny quotients of the show got raised because he portrayed his character so beautifully. Only Toma can make a complete dork of himself and come out looking cool, heroic, and understanding in the end. You might say it's my other-guy syndrome kicking in but I wished I could let him have his girl. ;)
You've Probably Seen Him In: I already mentioned it but what the heck, Hana Kimi - Japan. Yes, it didn't follow the manga in some major aspects but I didn't mind, at all. Somehow, they made it work for me. And Toma's presence as Nakatsu is enough to reel you in. 'Nuff said.
You Should Check Him Out In: I recommend Honey and Clover, the live action drama, especially to those who haven't read the manga or watched the anime first (easier to watch it if you can't/don't compare ;)). Toma plays weak and confused Yuta, a college student whose life starts turning around when he meets Hagumi, a small and quiet artist with passion enough for both of them. The story revolves around them and their circle of friends, their realistic hardships and growing pains. Another I'd suggest is the popular Maou, the Japanese version of Korea's The Devil. Again, it would be best if you hadn't watched The Devil because if you already have, you wouldn't be able to help yourself from comparing. It's a different (and shorter) take on essentially the same story. Toma plays the well-meaning detective with the past that is haunting him. He didn't watch the Korean original before he played the role so that his portrayal of the character wouldn't be affected by it. I admire him for that. :) Plus, you get Ohno Satoshi as the two-faced lawyer bent on destruction (oddly fascinating to see Ohno this way, rofl).
Why He's On My List: Nakatsu, Nakatsu, Nakatsu. He was just too unforgettable as Nakatsu that his name kept snaking up and up on my list. XD Can't...get...enough...of...him.

Like his friend Matsujun, Toma has pretty eyelashes.

His profile is stunning, too.

He's at his best in photoshoots when he's turning on the angst...

His angst, guyliner, and white skin here could make him pass for a vampire! XD

His angst also makes him inwardly want to audition for Death Note. XD

Oh, hi. It's me again. I'm probably not going to be able to icon for a while when I go back to uni. So forgive me if I keep posting. XD

Anyway, it's very late but I've been seeing a lot of "All I want for Christmas" icons across my animanga and j-pop fandoms so I got into my head that I'd make my own. :P Even though it's Christmas IN TWO DAYS, rofl. XD;;; Hope everyone's having a fun time over the holidays.

Charm Points: Warm crinkly brown eyes and sincere, gentle smile that light up the room. Beautiful, unassuming acting skills that endear him to the audience. A quiet, strong, steady presence that doesn't overpower you but rather makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
The Magic of Tsumabuki Satoshi: He's another one of those underrated, overlooked actors (at least, on LJ, rofl, because he's very popular in Japan) that I can't help loving. His acting has alternately made me smile, giggle, cry, and want to throw things at the television screen. His charisma isn't something mysterious or magnetic, unlike some of the actors on my list. Rather, his presence is familiar and normal and makes you feel protected and warm. Watching a drama with him in it is like sipping on hot chocolate on a rainy day: comforting. ;)
You've Probably Seen Him In: One of my favorite dramas of all time, Orange Days. Beautiful realistic story, engaging characters (and excellent characterization), and killer soundtrack. I couldn't ask for anything else. It tells the story of gentle and confused Kai who's trying to figure out what to do with his life after college and Sae (played by one of my favorite actresses/singers Shibasaki Kou), a partially deaf violinist with a beautiful face and a violent temper who realizes she can't get enough out of life. It's a coming-of-age drama that isn't just about romantic love but also about friendship, courage, and strength. Highly recommended. Satoshi's acting shines here in its comforting and quiet glory. You'll have to watch it to see what I mean. :)
You Should Check Him Out In: Another series I recommend, Slow Dance. Just a warning to those who can't take slow-paced dramas because this one is definitely one of the slower ones. ;) It tells the simple but realistic story of 25-year-old Riichi, a young man who's afraid of taking risks, and 31-year-old Isaki, a brash clothing-store owner. Loving one another is just not that simple. Other series that you might be interested in: Lunch Queen (I honestly only watched this because of him, the heroine drove me crazy) and an upcoming kind of historical drama (based on a novel) that I'm excited about, Tenchijin (Abe Hiroshi is also in the cast!). He's also an excellent movie actor and has always had a lot of challenging roles. Try Haru no Yuki for starters and look at the stills for Dororo (with Shibasaki Kou again ;)).
Why He's On My List: I'll never forget his superb acting in Orange Days and that one role was enough to solidify his position in my list. I only found him improving in subsequent series and I can't get enough of him. :)

Charm Points: You might say he's the ultimate pretty boy: pretty eyelashes, wide eyes, pouty lips, nice cheekbones. His features aren't perfect but they sure are beautiful. He may be pint-sized (in comparison to the rest of them) but his charisma is overflowing. He pretty much makes whatever hairstyle or clothes he's wearing look gorgeous, even if in reality, they're really trashy. XD There's just something about his angsty stare and stance that make him adorable.
The Magic of Matsujun: Okay. Let's make something clear. Matsujun isn't the best actor in the world but his charm makes everything believable. Basically, just his presence on screen is something you can't ignore. XD He's just that memorable. I'm also biased since...you could say that Matsujun was my first in the j-drama world and I followed his dramas. What I like about him is I noticed a lot of improvement in his acting with each role, despite some similarities in the characters he plays.
You've Probably Seen Him In: That drama that's on everyone's list, Hana Yori Dango. He plays pineapple-head Domyoji, bad boy leader of the F4. The other drama you've probably already seen? What else but Gokusen? He plays Shin Sawada, the cool but magnetic 'leader' of Class 3D.
You Should Check Him Out In: That interesting drama based on yet another manga, Kimi wa Petto. If you haven't already heard of it, the story revolves around an assertive go-getter woman who keeps getting slammed by men and her colleagues at work because of her success. One night, she finds a wounded young man (Matsujun) in a cardboard box...and the circumstances somehow end up with her "adopting" him. She decides to call him Momo after her much-loved dog in the past. I love Matsujun here because his character is daring and adventurous plus the show deals with mature themes that you wouldn't think previously cute and kid-friendly Matsujun would want himself to be associated with at that point in his career. Also check out Bambino! where he plays an arrogant young aspiring chef who falls flat on his face when he moves to Tokyo to try his luck. The story in itself is already absorbing. Add Matsujun and you're in for an enjoyable 11 episodes.
Why He's On My List: Matsujun started at the bottom of my list but in the end, I just kept pushing him up because of his sentimental value, rofl. The long and short of it is, I couldn't resist him. :)

This is one instance where I had a hard time picking pictures because practically all his photos are beautiful. XD

Matsujun's eyelashes have to be the prettiest in the world.

They even look beautiful while he angsts.

Even better with ~~gay~~guyliner. *swoon*

But srsly, what's up with guys and their guyliner?

This question calls for some serious pondering.

Did I mention Matsujun makes any hairstyle look great?

He even makes eyebags look good.

He even makes singing in horrendous clothes look beautiful.

He can also pull of the delightfully adorkable look.

Belle's Top 20 Asian Drama Actors; #11 - Uhm Tae Woong

And today, my mini-hiatus officially ends. I'm done with my exams so I'm finally free to rest and do as I please. XD Very sorry for the delay.

Charm Points: Very expressive eyes that can showcase hurt, intensity, anger, and cuteness at different points in time. Adorable laugh lines...and a smile that's just as adorable. Pretty jawline. Excellent, excellent acting skills -- very versatile.
The Magic of Uhm Tae Woong: Only one word for him, really, and that is enigmatic. Tae Woong has this gritty, manly charm to him that's hard to resist whatever role he takes. In contrast to a lot of the people on my list (as you may have noticed, I love pretty men), he has a sort of gruff but lovable appeal to him that intrigues people and pulls them in. Animal magnetism, rofl. The magic is really in his acting because when you see him on screen, your eyes just get glued to him. You listen to what he has to say and watch his every move. He's also very good at expressing different emotions which makes the audience very sympathetic towards the characters he plays.
You've Probably Seen Him In: That drama I've already mentioned, Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, where he plays the lovable other guy. This is Tae Woong at, what you might call, his basic best. :P
You Should Check Him Out In: I know, I know. Joo Ji Hoon's already at #12 and here I come again with another topnotch actor from The Devil. I can't help it. Like I said, it's one of my favorite k-dramas of all time. The mystery, the emotion, the angst. With beautiful actors, scriptwriting, and cinematography, how can they go wrong? :) Tae Woong plays well-meaning Detective Oh Soo (my favorite character in the series) who has to face the ghosts of his past when a couple of recent murders boggle the police force. Tae Woong plays his troubled protagonist-villain role to the hilt and this was how I finally fell in love with his acting. Also make sure to check out one of hils older series, Resurrection. I've only started on it and I'm already giddy with delight. Expect drama, suspense, and drama cliches -- and Tae Woong makes it all worth it. <3
Why He's On My List: He's adorable, he's brilliant, he's down-to-earth. This superb actor made it so close to my Top 10. That's how much I adore him. If I had encountered him earlier, he would have been even higher on the list. However, I have a fondness and certain emotional attachment to my Top 10, which is why he remains at Top 11.

Hm, so which Tae Woong should I be today?

I pick 'dashingly handsome'.

Especially in suits.

Even if the woman whose arm is linked with his...isn't me.

Just stick with your guy friends, Tae Woong.

But there should always be room for angst.

Even when you're singing.

Not to mention grit and anger.

And just a pinch of aloofness.

Don't forget emo.

All these ever-changing emotions make Tae Woong feel sheepish.

Maybe a phone call will help.

Icon Post (Lucky 13)! Xiah Junsu Special!

Yes, guys, I'm finally back. I was sick the entire week (I only went to school today; in fact, I still have no voice, a cough and cold, but at least the fever's finally gone, hurray). I couldn't believe it. <.<; But, anyway, I'm back in commission now and should be back with the next guy on the Top 20 List tomorrow.

What better way to celebrate than with a Xiah Junsu Special? It's been months since I last made icons what with the death of my laptop (and with it, my icon muse). My muse has revived in time for Su's birthday on December 15th. :) I'll be busy with exams next week (more delay on the list, but I'll try to post some more, I promise :P) so I thought I'd have this in before I get occupied.

The Magic of Joo Ji Hoon: The first thing you'll notice is probably his looks or his height. But what really made me love him was his versatility. Ji Hoon isn't afraid of taking risks and grabbing challenging roles. I really wish he'd take more dramas but I've read in drama blogs that he's picky in terms of salary. I have no way for sure to find out if this is true but whether or not it is, I applaud Ji Hoon for his choices of roles. None of them are the same and each is more challenging the previous. More on how I finally realized the magic of his acting below...
You've Probably Seen Him In: That hit k-drama (that I happened to already mention for #14, Kim Jung Hoon) Goong. I'm probably part of the minority here but I personally didn't like his acting in this drama. He was way too restrained and stiff even for his character. This is just my opinion, though, so feel free to disagree. XD It's actually probably the character of the prince itself that I didn't like (because he only showed signs of actual care towards the lead in what? The last few eps?) so don't mind me. If this is how I viewed his acting, why is he on the list, then? Read on. ;)
You Should Check Him Out In:

That mystery-suspense drama The Devil that, I've noticed, some people give up on watching. Why, guys? ;_; This is one of my favorite Korean dramas of all time. It's very absorbing, thrilling, and emotionally-wrenching. I don't suggest marathoning the series especially for those who don't want their minds to get all jumbled up. I, for one, squeezed in some fluff in between so my forehead would have the chance to unwrinkle itself. It tells the story of Detective Oh Soo who, failing to solve two seemingly unrelated murders, enlists the aid of a psychic woman. She reveals they're related to a murder in the past and Oh Soo realizes they might have a connection to him. Ji Hoon plays the role of the villain (slash protagonist, if you look at it), an enigmatic lawyer with a hidden agenda.
Both the detective and the lawyer here are lovable protagonists/villains, very well-rounded characters that you can't box into a stereotype, which is why I love them to bits. The cinematography is beautiful, the soundtrack is also excellent. Paired with strong characters and a kickass plot, The Devil is one drama you'll never forget. Highly recommended. Ji Hoon's acting style fits in well with his character here, someone stiff and unrelenting but with hidden depth and tears behind his anger. And, because of this, I found myself smitten. :o
I watched this drama long before I heard Japan was remaking it (Maou). When I watched the first episode of Maou, I was sorely disappointed because the greatness of The Devil just can't be captured in 10 episodes. It felt too hurried. Nevertheless, for those who probably won't appreciate the longer dramas, then Maou would be the choice for you.

Why He's On My List: Need I say more? Not only is he a good-looking actor/model, he's an actor who really aspires to be the best. <3 Check him out in that movie Antique Bakery (very recently released in Korea). Yes, it's based on the brilliant manga of the same name and if you know what it's about, then you know it's challenging to act in it. He's the Korean equivalent of the character of Keichiro. I'm in love with this movie because it also stars hottie Kim Jae Wook, that pretty long-haired guy from Coffee Prince. He plays the equivalent of Yusuke and he fits the role to a T. XD

Ji Hoon's specialty is his srz biznes face...

...with his trademark smoky stare.

He tends to look good in suits...

...especially while playing the piano.

But he has casual outfits, too...

...and models them with his dog.

Who says a prince...

...can't be a gangsta?

Not Ji Hoon.

Belle's Top 20 Asian Drama Actors; #13 - Lee Min Ki

Charm Points: Strong features that make him look cool (and sometimes, angry) whichever angle you look at him (in Filipino, I'd say he personifies the word astig). Has a cute signature no-teeth showing smile (but he does give us some flashy dental display, too). XD Adventurous (in all senses of the word -- although I sometimes question his style, I admire him for having the pizazz to try and pull things off). A free thinker who isn't afraid of challenging the norms.
The Magic of Lee Min Ki: Another one of those natural charmers on the list, Min Ki's charisma has the power to make you believe in his characters. His character can be gentlemanly and kind or irritating and idiotic and you'd love them both. But, really, it's when he plays straightforward characters that are inwardly protective of their loved ones that I like him best.
You've Probably Seen Him In: What else but Dal Ja's Spring? It's one of those dramas that I can't help liking. It's about Dal Ja (played by the adorable Chae Rim who'd be in my in Top 20 Asian Drama Actresses List if I had one), a 30+ woman deciding whether or not she'd like to stay single or settle down. Min Ki plays Tae Bong, a guy she hires to become her fake boyfriend. The premise might sound cliched to some but the story's alternately funny and realistic plot makes this a drama to put on your to-watch list. It's fresh, fun, and striking. Min Ki's character is mysterious, protective...and funny. I can't really explain in so many words but this is the drama that made me love him. :)
You Should Check Him Out In: That daily drama, Be Strong, Geum Soon! I'm not done watching this yet (163 episodes!) but it's about a young woman who gets married early and widowed early. She has to stay with the family of her deceased husband and is faced with the trials of getting along with them, raising her child, and fulfilling her dream of becoming a hairstylist. Min Ki plays one of the husband's elder brothers, a narcissistic and vocal man who wants to become a model. XD Very refreshing to see him in angry!brother mode. That drama that needs more love, Evasive Inquiry Agency. They had very low ratings in Korea but I read the review on Dramabeans and fell in love. It's about a group of people from different walks of life (Min Ki is a taekwondo instructor here, rofl)...deciding to look for treasure (but it's more complicated than it sounds). :P It's very funny and thought-provoking at the same time. Also look for him in the movie that's coming out soon, Romantic Island, which was filmed in Boracay. :D
Why He's On My List: I don't just love his acting *cough*and his looks*cough*, I admire his adventurousness. His personality itself is very fiery, energetic, and fresh. He always brings something new to the table when he's there. ;)

It was hard to look for pictures of Min Ki. Perhaps I was just looking at the wrong places. But, anyway, things turned out kind of weird...

Min Ki is an adventurous guy. Just look at the hair. ~~And the clothes.~~

But, sometimes, I just really want to fire his stylist.

I mean, really.

But I don't hate all his clothes.

In fact, I rather love this suit. Part of it, anyway.

But I got distracted by the smile.

I brought two videos for you today. Lee Min Ki is actually an aspiring singer. He loves punk and rock but I happen to think he'd do best with softer songs, perhaps ballads, rofl. Here's a catchy song by FreeTempo x Sheean (Sheean is so cool 0_0) that features his vocals. It's called Power of Love. :) If you want to fast-forward to when he starts singing, go to 1:42.

The second one is a 'watch at your own risk' kind of thing. I personally thought this performance was trashy but fresh. Min Ki got to live out his rockstar dreams (he's always wanted to be a rock star apparently XD) as he sang the rock version (he covered someone else's rock version of the song, anyway) of Sinatra's My Way at the MKMF 2008. He actually looks good as a rocker but his rocker voice...needs some work.

Thanks to ladysaotome who pointed out Min Ki's Like Candy (a ballad) MV, it's a song from his drama Really Really Like You (Love Truly) and I can't believe I haven't watched this yet! Both the MV and the drama, rofl.

So I marathoned up to Episode 7 of Beethoven Virus today (well, okay, I actually began last night) and my love for Jang Geun Suk has just increased tenfold. The cuteness of his smile, it burns. XD And I love how dorky he looks with that smile on his face and his awkward hand movements when he conducts the orchestra during practice.

Speaking of Asian dramas, I really should be doing some reviews (Hong Gil Dong especially) but this list is surprisingly time-consuming but I'm getting the hang of it and do it faster each time. On the downside, I got distracted while looking at #14's photos today and spent more than an hour just looking at page after page of his pictures (without saving anything, I just kept staring XD;). So who is this guy, anyway? *wiggles eyebrows*

Can be alternately heartwrenching and villainous depending on his role.
The Magic of Kim Jung Hoon: I can't explain it without mentioning the drama that made him better known, Goong. He plays Prince Yul, the former Crown Prince, who falls in love with his cousin Prince Shin's bride (a common girl), while plotting to take over Shin's place. His character is kind, caring, and confused. He wants to be cunning and ruthless but can't fully get himself into it. And Jung Hoon totally got his character across effectively: kindness, villainy, anger, hurt (he's especially good at this emotion), sadness, and all. He's the underdog here, a lovable villain that you can't really hate, which is why I kept rooting for his character instead of Shin (played by Joo Ji Hoon). :) If you've watched Goong, even if you were rooting for Prince Shin, you know what I'm talking about. :P
You've Probably Seen Him In: Well, like I said, Goong. XD
You Should Check Him Out In: That funny drama I already mentioned before, Witch Amusement, if only to check him out as a cold-hearted villain. And when I say cold-hearted, I mean it. Here he plays the heroine's first love, a serious and scheming doctor who breaks the heroine's heart constantly. When I watched him in this, I wanted to stab his character with a fork, rofl. I'd give Love Strategy, his recent drama with Vivian Hsu, a mention but I haven't watched it for myself so I can't really recommend it yet. :P
Why He's On My List: He needs more love and his portrayal of Yul just bowled me over. ;_; I really wish he'd get to play more leading roles (even supporting) in more interesting and challenging dramas but he seems to be focusing more on his music. :) But I'll be here waiting for his future projects. *crosses fingers*

Charm Points: Killer smile. Crinkly eyes. Signature smoldering stare (that he should totally use more often in photoshoots! XD). Signature mullet that surprisingly grows on you (note: it actually looks pretty good in him). The posterboy for the ultimate bad boy image (we ladies love the dangerous guys) and he's really good at it! Emo bad boy, really irritating but inwardly goodhearted boy, he can do them all. :P He's not afraid to look dorky...so adorkable. His fun personality on and off cam makes me grin like a maniac.
The Magic of Mike He: He's just so good at being a bad boy! He's one of those actors who get typecast into a certain character and therefore continue doing roles like that. But the difference is, Mike He always brings something new to his bad boy persona. And he's just so charismatic and LOLarious all the time that you can't help but love him. Not to mention the smoldering stare. Truly the only one of its kind (you have to see it to believe it; unfortunately, it's difficult to see him like this in his photoshoots but give his dramas a try if you haven't already). One other great thing about Mike is that he has great chemistry with whoever his love interest is (and I'm not just talking about Rainie Yang :P), now that's a real charmer.
You've Probably Seen Him In: That hit TW-drama, Devil Beside You, which was based on the manga Akuma De Souro (which I haven't read). He plays Jiang Meng, the school troublemaker. A girl who was giving her letter to her crush found herself standing in front of him instead (woe, her crush failed to see her). This is one crazy drama that'll surely bring out a lot of emotions in you. What I love here is the chemistry between Mike He and Rainie Yang, which made everything work whatever they were doing and whatever situations they found themselves in. It's one of those dramas I was only curious about at first but when I started watching, I got hooked. 0_0
You Should Check Him Out In: That rollercoaster of a drama, Why Why Love. Mike He plays, surprise surprise, a troublemaker who pulls a Master/Angel coupon from the heroine Jia Di's raffle box at a fair. It's actually more complicated and less silly than it sounds but just that premise is enough to hook you. XD A bit melodramatic and really unbelievable sometimes (I mean, the coincidences just keep piling up) but all these fade into the background because of the hilarity, cuteness, and sizzling chemistry of RainiexMike. I also loved Kingone's character here and routinely felt sorry for him, one of those dramas where you root for Mike He but feel your heart break for Kingone, anyway. Highly recommended. Also check out Love Contract with Ariel Lin playing opposite Mike. ;)
Why He's On My List: Alternately cute and handsome, Mike He isn't just a pretty face. He plays his bad boy characters to the hilt. And he does well. :D His crinkly eyes and signature smoldering look are really enough to put him on my list. XD I also love his uncanny ability to have a lot of chemistry with his leading ladies.
