Are you out?: Yep. I came out to friends & school people age 14, and my family a little under a year later.
If so, what happened?: Rough school in the North of England, you work it out. There's still people who'll spit at me in the street. I'm cool with it. Most of the girls who treated me that way are knocked up and alone right now so I'm feelin' pretty good about myself. The teachers are the ones I really have a lot of resentment for - the science teacher who sat me down and told me that I was too young to know who I was attracted to, and said they wouldn't do anything about the biphobia/homophobia because it didn't mean anything at our age. The library manager who told me it was my fault I got knocked down and stamped on - I shouldn't have made an issue of my sexuality. They know who they are, and I hope it bites 'em in the ass some day.
My parents didn't care. They didn't dare tell their church friends until I gave them an ultimatum - tell them, or I will, and I won't mince words. They're taking care of that this week.

If not, whats holding you back?: I'm really worried how this will affect my relationship with my family. I know my big sister would be fully supportive, a few of her friends are queer and she supports gay marriage. My mother has her suspicions of me being a Lesbian and has asked me a few times, but I've denied it. She wouldn't throw me out but, when I've asked her on her views of Homosexuality she just said it was "Unnatural" she would occasionally talk about the bible and what it says and blah blah blah...But she also told me if I was gay she'd still love me as much as she does now and that nothing would change that. My biggest worry is my brother. After our father passed away last year he got into religion hardcore. I knew my big brother was homophobic (Maybe even a little racist...) but after getting into religion he kinda went off the deep end with his homophobia. He also goes on about how television and music are evil and some other crazy stuff. (But that's not really what this is about.) He said he would never harm a GLBT person (Because the bible says it's wrong to kill people.) but he disproves greatly of them, considers them evil and says they are all going to rot in hell. My grandparents are another thing that would be greatly disproving of me and would probably never want to see me again, along with cutting me out of the will.

I have come out to most of my friends but told them to not tell my family under any circumstances. Pretty much all of them have been accepting and none of them have stopped being friends with me because of it. I will someday come out to my family, but right now there is a lot of inner turmoil going on in the family and I don't want to add more to the problems everyone is going through.

Are you happy with your choice?: Yes, I am. I feel that at this moment in time this is the best decision to make. I feel when the family's problems have resolved at least a little bit I will inform them. At this time it would cause nothing but more trouble.

Pride! 09 in Toronto

Hello people!

Sunday was the TO pride parade! Yay! I skipped out on marching in the Dyke March on saturday, since it costs me a fair bit to get into TO and I can't afford it while on student-welfare...but did anyone else in the GTA go? Do you have pictures if you did?

As for the parade itself- I sadly didn't get to see much. I planned on being 2 hours early with my friends so we could get a good spot...but they showed up an hour and a half late then wanted to hang out with other people who've treated me poorly in the past. I left the group but was too uncomfortable with having to fight a crowd of people to see. I spent most of the time at the various booths. I did get to see this great group marching in support of those in Palestine, so huzzah for that!

How have other cities Pride Festivals been? Next year (when I can drink) I intend on going to a lot more than just the parades during the week.

However, something rather upsetting did happen at the parade. Me and my two friends Kevin (who I'm sort of dating, and had been dating for over a year before some drama happened there. LONG story) and Cameron were walking by the booths when a girl with a spank-paddle came up to us asking if we wanted spankings. We all denied, but here's what happened:

Girl: Spankings?
Cam: No thanks
Me: Sorry
Kev: No. Just no.
Girl: Oh? That's too bad *spanks Kevin on the bum*
Kev: No! *take paddle away and puts down on bench*

Holy shit, where do people get off invading space like that? No means no, even when you're feeling good about yourself, Girl. I find this is happening a lot more than I like around people who also identify as queer, when in groups. Does anyone else have experience with this sort of thing?

my story: i pretty much spent my teen years locked inside of my room, and my own head. i didn't have many friends, and i didn't feel the need for them. i knew i was different from others, and i didn't know if it was all that okay. i heard so many issues on gay people, and how it was bad. i was so terrified i'd be bullied about my sexuality if anyone knew, and i couldn't get myself to tell anyone. i did tell my cousin when i was about 13, and that's pretty much what brought us closer. it took so many years, and my senior year i started opening up. people knew i was, but it wasn't open for discussion. during my senior year, everything changed. i gained more friends, more close bonds, and i am so happy. my best friend who i told i was gay to told me it was okay, and it didn't change anything. i started telling more and more people. i even told my crush, and after a few weeks of fighting and tears, he finally opened up and told me he liked me too. today we are still going strong and i couldn't be happier. <3. anyway, my biggest 'coming out' was doing an 'all about myself' project for a class. i had to present it infront of the class, and i did it. people told me it was all good, and i was still the same steven they knew. i even wrote a paper about myself with that teacher, and he loved it. the teacher was so proud of me.
anyway, everyone pretty much knows, but i haven't told my parents, but the thing is.. my boyfriend always stays at my house, or i'm at his house, so it's a bit obvious. my father is always cracking jokes, and the other day even said "it's out of the bag, everyone knows" and he seemed perfectly fine with it. it's crazy, i didn't realize everyone would accept it. <3.

I am so happy that I can have the freedom and power to step up and anounce where I am with my life, but the more I think of it, the more offensive and defining 'coming out' is. I hope this is ok to post. I love pics. I also posted this to my own journal (with a slightly different introduction, natch) and to a few other communities, so sorry if you get this 4394398439843899342 times on your F-list. But the pics are so cool I had to share. I culled these from various sources all across the internet.

Disclaimer:

I was never one of those people who liked labels. They're stupid. I mean, useful for like, cans of soup and stuff, but, y'know, not so much for people because people don't fit into boxes (unless you bash them with a crowbar and make them fit and even then they tend to bulge out and leak and stuff). So I never ever meant to be one of those people who runs around on rooftops shouting out who I am. Even when I was a rabid fundamentalist who believed a bunch of stupid things (and a few true things, tossed in for good measure) I never liked running around and beating people with the bible. I want to have real conversations with real people, not slap labels on them or spew bumper sticker theology out of my mouth. But I always ended up in positions where I had to try and defend myself against accusations (because, y'know, Christians can be MEAN and I don't want people to think that of me...) so when I figured out I was gay, I resolved that I wouldn't run around telling people (and I was never going to buy t-shirts or bumper stickers or anything like that) because who cares? This doesn't define who I am, no one thing does, and I wasn't going to be all annoying about it (like those people who convert to some religion and then won't shut up about it). But again...I kept getting put into these situations where people had misconceptions about me, or they believed destructive things about themselves, or they hated themselves, and I always felt compelled to try and speak or write or take pictures or do whatever I could to continue the conversation and try to help people see things in a different way. I mean, some of the people in my small, backwoods town really hate themselves and think they're evil and think they're going to burn in hell forever. There's a counseling program run by one of the churches here that promises to heal you of homosexuality if you submit to God and follow their four week "Training in Righteousness" regimen. They call homosexuality an "evil soul tie" that can only be broken by the love of Christ.

In an environment like this, I can't just keep silent and not say anything. I mean that. Honestly, I've found some conversations to be more important than just words. Every second I can get people to stay with me and engage is another second they're choosing to live and not die (and I don't just mean physically...people who spend every second of their lives repressing themselves so they can fit into a church and beating themselves up for perceived failures are just as dead inside as any corpse...I know because I was one of them). I know this probably makes me sound like a drama queen, and I've accepted that a long time ago, but I can't help it. This is how I see things. Because of my position and the town in which I live, I end up talking about "gay" and "Christian" a lot more than I ever expected I would, and it makes me sound a lot more militant than I ever wanted to be, but if it helps people in small little towns like mine see that they're not evil and they're not alone, than that's more important than my ego. So I keep doing it.

I didn't think I was going to be able to get Chelsea to smile because she hates pictures so much, but here she is (and she looks so adorable; she and Andrew both do. this is one of the pictures I'm really proud of)

Here's Ashley on the bus handing out fliers. Let me explain. There's a free shuttle bus at FSU now (After we leave, they get all the helpful shit, Dani and Rachel can attest to this...I'm pissed). Jason called me off the soapbox after an hour and said "We know you like standing out and making a statement, Lillian" and I'm thinking, "Um...is he talking about me?" and he asks if I want to ride the student bus around campus for an hour and hand out fliers to people. I get this terrified look, but agree to do it, and they send another girl, Ashley, along with me. It's good she was there, because let me tell you about terrifying! First of all, the only people riding the bus with us were HUGE scary football player jocks who made lewd comments and called us "faggots" and "queers" (dude, stop calling me a faggot! That really pisses me off and it's not even the right word!) I don't know if I would have made it on my own or if I'd have run off the bus in tears, but we made it through, handed out fliers, and stayed silent and in our seats. It's so much harder riding that bus! It's terrifying to hand out fliers, but you get to walk away and you don't have to hear what people say about you behind your back. In the bus, you hear it all. SCARY. So hard not to bolt and run. I don't know if we made an impact (mostly the jocks just seemed mad and said we were "stirring up bullshit just to start trouble" but who knows. Maybe we made a dent somewhere. I know it made a dent in me. I haven't been that scared in a long time. It was hard. But I learned, I wrote down what the guys said, took a picture of the paper, and then filed it away. I found that writing it down made it easier to put behind me and get back to work. I'll have to see if that works in other situations in life.

Here is a picture of my flier (the jocks mocked it, reading it aloud in a high-pitched voice and it was hard for me not to cry, but I'm really proud of how the saying finally turned out...it's still long, even with editing, but it finally says what I wanted it to say. throughout the day, people would make objections that the event was just a "gay thing" and DSAGA people would say "No, lots of people feel like they have to be silent about who they are," and I was really happy to have introduced that idea into the day, because it helped people see how this kind of harassment impacts everyone whether they realize it or not).

When people came to our table, there was a poster board they could sign in support, and if they wanted, they could also write their names on a link in the rainbow chain, which I thought was an awesome idea). Here Bryce poses with the chain.

A while ago Iowa passed legislation to make same sex marriage legal. Now the lawmakers that helped in that wonderful victory are being harassed by Right Wing Conservative Christian groups to pass Iowa's own Prop 8.

2009 MBLGTACC

So it's kind of a late decision, but I'm going to the 2009 MBLGTACC (Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference - click here for more information).

I'm half excited and half apprehensive. I've never been to a conference like this before (I've been to a lot of scary Christian ones, but never a GAY one, so I'm trying not to freak out). Has anyone gone before/is anyone planning on going this year? Any advice for getting the most out of conferences like this?

I have a tendency to freak out around large groups of people, and I spent so long defining myself by what my church said about me that I don't know who I am without that so it's really hard for me to be around people not knowing how to act, but I don't want to skip out on this experience because I'm a big wimp.

Films- two questions

I work at Hollywood Video renting and selling videos. As a manager, I have a little say--but not a lot. A lesbiam customer came in the other day looking for Soldier's Girl and one of my employees said, "It's in Alternative Lifestyle." The customer was very upset and complained to me and every customer and employee who was within earshot how "Alternative Lifestyle" was offensive and outdated.

Now, I am a lesbian, but I am not offended by this sedction label for our films. She, however, was very VERY upset and called my manager, my manager's manager, and the coorperate office. The Big Heads decided to ignore her, and my manager and the district manager just laughed about it and make fun of this customer behind her back. So even though I am not offended by the label, I am offended by the way the management treated the situation.

[1] That said I have taken iton myself to revamp the section. I've renamed the section GLBTTQ- though I am uneasy about that. Is it too exclusive? A gay friend and regular customer said I ought to have two Qs (queer and questioning), but someone else said to take out a T because the sigular T was all encompassing. I looked online and it gave me things like GLBTTQ?IMLMFSA. Toooooo much, I think. What do you guys think is the most PC and appropriate title for the section?

[2] Also, I am going through all of the videos we have and sorting out which videos are gay-oriented and restocking them on my GLBTTQ shelves. So far I found 66 videos (the section went from one shelf to six), but I'm sure there are more hidden amongst the shelves that I have not found. What are some of your favorite queer films that I should look for to reshelve?
