I challenged Brian today to make a list of all the things he loves about himself. I figured it would be a good challenge for my livejournal friends as well, even though I don't post here often anymore. In the challenging economy we're facing personally here it can be nice to take a few minutes to recognize your own value and worth, especially if you are struggling with the job market like we are. Its hard when you get rejected to remember why they should hire you!!
So take a minute and think about it, even if you don't post it publicly. If you do post it, I'd love to see what you're thinking. :)

I'll be starting my own list now. We'll see if I post it. :)

Anyone else having problems with icons disappearing? I can't see like half of mine. :( I tried reloading one, same name etc but it still won't show up. Thoughts?
Or are they all showing up for you and its just my internet? >_<

Photo recovery software?

Anyone know of any good photo recovery software that can recover video files? Especially free/shareware or something you have and want to share. *wink* Cause my memory card sucks and has been dropping photos every time I plug it in. I bought a $20 recover off download.com, but it hasn't found my video files and I wanted to check before I formatted the damn thing. :(

Thanks guys. My birthday party is today (finally!) and I want to be able to take video and such. :D

Step One

Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fun ("I'd love a fandom icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real possible things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it. Once a wish has been granted, it will be crossed off my list.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1) Fic and drabble. Kaylee/Simon (Firefly/Serenity), Kara/Lee (BSG), Ten/Rose (Doctor Who)... when did all my pairings become het?
2) Icons made just for me. Ask me for specific ideas, I'm blank right now. But I've just realized I have 195 icon spots or something and I'm only using 120ish.
3) Jewelery. I'm new to the world of earrings, so I don't have very many. I prefer silver colors over gold. Nothing to heavy for earrings, since I'm new. See my amazon wishlist for ideas.
4) A nightstand, square/rectangular mirror for over my dresser, and a lamp to go on the nightstand. I'm nesting again now that I'm not moving.
5) New digital camera and underwater camera case for above mentioned camera. Something in the Nikon or Olympus families, with Image Stabilization built in.
7) Scrapbook supplies.
8) Giftcards. Ulta, Sephora, Gap, Banana Republic, Macy's, Nordstroms, Ann Taylor, B&N, Borders, Loew's(movie theater), National Amusement Cinemas, credit for winkflash.
9) Dance lessons, money for dance lessons, springstep gift certificates, offers to go dancing with me, etc.
10) Music to dance to; latin, salsa, merengue, waltz, any ballroom any latin etcetcetc.
11) A remote starter for my car. How do those work? I have a pontiac if that matters.
12) Either of the Josh Groban coffee mugs, off his website.
13) BPAL imps. My list of desired ones here.
14) Anything off my amazon wishlist. Its LONG, but has a huge variety of stuff on it. :)

I've done a friends cut, just getting rid of comms I don't care about any more, people that didn't have me friended back and never posted anymore, things like that. Its just so complicated dealing with filters and skimming with all that crap in the way! I had way to many things friended or watched or joined.
However, accidents happen. If I deleted you and you still want to be here, please comment and let me know. I'm not trying to exclude anyone that wants to be here. :)

Yeah, now that school is out and I feel like I have a summer... I'm going to do a summer reading list again. I am going to count the last book I read though, since it was read in what feels like summer ought to include. :p

Book 1: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

I started this book on an MCAS day and got through the first 100 pages in the first day. I never make it that far on the first day. I was enthralled. It moved really well, good pacing, kept you interested. I finished feeling like I knew a hell of a lot more about the area, which is sad since I feel like I should have known the basics at least a little better. But yes, a very very good read.

Book 2: The Once and Future King by T. H. White

I deleted some old journals, communities, people that don't have me friended. If I accidentally deleted you and you didn't want to be deleted/still read my journal, please comment! I didn't mean to get rid of anyone that wants to stay, just dead journals and comms.

Oh and I got so far behind on my flist it won't let me go back all the way. So if I missed anything important in your life PLEASE TELL ME. I do care about all of you, I've just been sort of overwhelmed lately. End of school year, really tired, distracted, etc. I've got about a dozen posts half typed that elaborate some. But the point is I want to know how you all are too. If you just want to link me to important posts that'd be wonderful, since I know this is an unlocked post.

Keyword, um... Rain. (Because it's the next keyword on a writing table I'm currently working through and I'm stuck!)

Storm clouds gathered in a dark sky. Change was coming, change was always coming. For those with Torchwood, it was just something you got used to. How did they ever get used to change, anyways? How do you get used to what didn't stay the same?
Ianto wrapped his coat tighter, shouldering off the cold chill of night. He felt the quality of air change just behind him and knew without looking that Jack was there. A comforting hand confirmed, and he leaned into the touch.
“You alright?”
“Always, now you’re back.”
A gentle patter of rain sounded on the stones. It wet their cheeks, washing away the ugliness that was washed to Earth through the rift, the ugliness they cleaned up every day. Ianto turned to face Jack, and let his face be lifted up to a gentle kiss.
“Good. I won’t be going again soon. You’re stuck with me.”

Somehow I have managed to zoom every fucking image on all my mozilla pages by about 4 scroll clicks. It does not matter if I restart, or how many times I reset individual images, they refresh zoomed in every single time. HOW DO I FIX THIS? I can't find any menu options remotely helpful! I'm so frusterated! Nothing looks right, and pages don't line up right! *whimpers*

Help? Anyone? What caused it, and more importantly, how do I put it back?

EDIT: I disabled a zoom featuring extension. It seems to be fixed. Perhaps an update didn't work with it? Whatever, the images are all better now, I'll try that plug in in a month and see if its better. :p

1) Computer speakers. Something with a volume control on one of the small desktop speakers, but that also has separate bass adjust on the bass speaker.

2) Books - recommendations, used, new, etc. Children's/YA for classroom use (eventually), science fiction and fantasy two of the favorites for personal free selections. I've also recently loved Plum Wine, and I'm working on Eat, Pray, Love.

3) New dance shoes. I've about worn out my first pair, and I'm thinking about getting leather soled for my next pair.

4) Music; I love new recs, but I'd also especially love any of the following... Ben's Brother - Stuttering. The song "Orange Colored Sky", by anyone... I don't even know who did the original, but I'm dying for a copy of it. The Beatles - P.S. I Love You. Anything by Philip Glass. Christmas carols, especially rare copies of Carol of the Bells, Mary Did You Know, Oh Holy Night, etc.
PART B: RARE Josh Groban stuff. I've got everything officially released on CD, but... you know. Live performances. Stuff that doesn't exist. Whatever. DVD/CD preferred to downloads for big files, as I'm on wireless currently ~~and have limited hard drive space~~.

5) Furniture - ~~Cushy chair: I want a big soft chair to put by my bay window to have somewhere cozy to read.~~ Nightstand/bedside table: Something in a dark wood/espresso finish, with a drawer. Table lamp: brushed metal, dark better. Something like this or this style. A room size floor rug: something earthy and more modern, nothing oriental looking. Wall mirror: Worked metal frame, preferably scrolly artsy, rectangle, at least 20" each side for just the mirror.
A wine bar. Completely ridiculous at this point in my life, but they're so pretty! XD
Wood in espresso finish, dark dark wood. Fabrics in dark red like cranberry and maroon,

6) Curtains - Something meshy? Light and airy anyways, in a maroon or golden yellow.

7) Scrapbook stuff - 12x12 paper, Close to my Heart inks, mono adhesive, pretty ribbons, stickers, etc. Set of plastic drawers to organize everything.

8) Anything in the Breathe: Romance scent from Bath and Body Works. Especially the body cream, the high lather wash, the moisturizing in shower lotion, or the regular body lotion.

9) New LJ layouts. I love my current, but I tire of teal and torchwood temporarily. I just get so lazy with taking the time to code all the color values in. :p

10) Good fic. Recs appreciated, but I'd especially love offers of drabbles. Like, you give me a fandom you'd write from my favorites, I give you a pairing and a prompt?

11) Pictures and postcards - I'll be picky here, and ask that they be in the mail. I'd love more things to decorate my memory boards and walls, but rarely manage to print them myself. But I LOVE getting mail, and seeing pictures of what you see or you yourself or that beautiful state park you went to in June, etc, make me happy. And postcards, hello! Whee easy mail from around the world! Somewhere you've been, your hometown, anything! Just jot me a quick note to tell me the story of the place. :)

12) BPAL imps - "Complete" list can be found in a post here.

13) Games - Most especially, a chess set, and scrabble.

14) Red Sox shirt - Like, jersey style, but not. Preferably not someone that's going to get traded right away. :p Or just a t-shirt that says Red Sox on it on the front in the font.

15) Memory card for my phone - It doesn't have to be huge. Just, you know, so the music software makes sense. I have a Razor.

16) Wonder vase - They come in packs of two... I've seen them in the sky mall catologues and on ebay. I'd love a set of clear/white ones... they're perfect for me (or any college student/apartment confined friend you may have) because they take up next to no storage space, but allow you to have nice flowers anyways. I figure clear/white goes with more flowers, but if you've got one in another color that you want to get rid of... ;)

17) Amazon wishlist - Errr... cop out, I know. But since I'm over 10 anyways... yeah, so this is all the other stuff. :p

I'm not at skip400 on my flist. I confess I've skimmed a few posts... and unfriended two people but they didn't have me friended, I don't think. Comment if I unfriended you on accident?

I'm just... really, I'm so stressed with all the uncertainty in my life that I kinda can't handle fandom right now. So there's this huge urge to purge my flist down to just the people I read every single entry of. That's kinda a sad thought though, since fandom is what brought me here in the first place. I think part of it is the summer hiatuses... not enough content, just wank and bullshitting to pass time. But I don't think this is a good time for me to make decisions like that anyways. I need to do things like delete old emails first. :p

However, consider this an open call. If you've been wanting to unfriend me, and haven't done it to spare my feelings or something, go ahead and leave me a note. I'll beg you to stay if I can't stand the thought of parting, but otherwise we can maybe part peacefully? I don't know, does that make me sound like a bitch? Like if I don't beg you I never loved you? Cause of course that's not true. Also of course you're free to unfriend me whenever, but if you don't say so my poor frazzled brain might not notice for awhile. Not because I don't care about you, but because I'll have no idea if you changed your name or went on vacation or what other nonsense.

Maybe in another few weeks I can delete a few more comms or something. That would help too. I've already got a feed that's about to get hacked. I skip more than I read at this point, and don't get enough out of what I do read. :p

Paid account offer

This will sound a little selfish, but its also a good deal really.

I have just purchased my permanent account. Their 'keep your paid time' offer allows me to transfer any paid time left over to any other non-permanent account. (I'd hoped it would say "you've got $18 towards the payment", but whatever.)

So here's the deal. The first person to comment with a qualifying account and a reasonable offer gets the transfer. I've got 153.77 days of both paid time and extra icon time - they go together. That's worth about 5 months, or $12.5 with automatic payments ($15 without). I'm thinking "reasonable offer" would be $6 (half off!) or something care package-y. Like, if you make a craft, send along something. Or if you buy scrapbooking supplies in bulk, send along some pretty paper. Or if you know you have a bunch of music I want, send along some burned CDs. Something off my amazon wishlists would be fair (though I'm not sure much of it is cheap enough to count as fair to you). Or, donate to one of my favorite charities (Heifer Project International, WWF, and Habit for Humanity being front runners) and send along a screen cap of the receipt/gift it in my honor so I get a card/etc.

If you're donating or amazoning, comment before you do anything so no one accidentally doubles, making me feel guilty for not being able to gift everyone.

Totally selfish? Eh. Not if you go with the charity. I just don't want to have to pick from a whole flist of lovely people. ~~So I'm opening myself up to bribery instead.~~

EDIT: Also, I'd like to point out that with a week left of the sale, it would be almost impossible for me to correctly guess who is staying paid and who is going permanent. So I can't just pick and surprise one of you. :p

Book 1: The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl

I was hoping this might be a good book for the kids I babysit. What with there being three of them, I get the feeling their parents don't often get to read many longer books to them. So I want to try to see if we can read a few chapters every week until we get through a longer book. The older two can manage it. This one is short enough that it will probably be one night, but still. For Dahl, its not terribly morbid. I was worried for a bit her magic finger was going to kill everyone. :p So this will do far better than The Witches.

Book 2: Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

The story was really good, and it moves at a good pace, keeping you hooked. Its supposed to be a kids book, but I would say not until they're about 10 unless they have an adult reading it to them both for vocab and scare factor. I could have read it younger, but according to my mom I was a genious or something. Wonder what happened. ;) Love that there is a sequel to look forward to. Love the imagery and the author's style in general. Love that "everyone" in the book thinks all authors are dead and gone, or at least dying and grey. :)

Book 3: Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry

I didn't realize how soon it was going to end or I'd have had the next book on hand already! Beautifully written, but like all Lois Lowry books it took a little while for me to get into it. The third chapter is what finally got me, not because it was spectactular but because I begin to relate to the characters and stop wondering how it is related to The Giver. Great book, can't wait to get the next one.

Book 4: How to Breathe Underwater by Julie Orringer

The stories were good, but not GREAT as everyone made it sound they would be. This collection was recommended by my mom, of all people. It is supposed to depict the trials we all go through in our youth. I'm sorry, but I can't relate to any of these. Half of them are sexual, but mostly in bad ways (unwelcome touching by a family friend's son, etc) and the rest are death and drugs. The only way they feel close to me is that I can imagine them having happened to anyone I knew at school or friends I had. These aren't dirty gang riddled tales. Still, I prefer stories with classic ideas and happy endings. While fiction, these are just a little too real.

Book 5: The BFG by Roald Dahl

I decided to reread this one before I'm in the classroom again. Around here Roald Dahl is always taught in an author study. I'm finding I don't like it as much as I remember. The made up words are just more fun as a kid.

Book 6: Messenger by Lois Lowry

This is by far one of the best books I've read all summer. I ADORE this book. It is, however, very sad. The imagery is amazing, the characters are totally real, though the Forest bothered me until the very end when the big reveal made it all more clear. I love how everything finally collects in this last book. In Gathering Blue you can only sorta see how it all ties in. Here you see the full picture, and it is beautiful.

Because LJ is seriously pissing me off. During this time, I will also be sporting a much abridged userinfo. Its not that I have anything to hide, but that No One Should. This selective silencing and witch-hunting is unacceptable.

Let me just say, laughing is a bad idea when your throat hurts. I mean, I've survived, clearly. But omg. And how perfectly does this sum up high school band?? Almost as good as my college orchestra director informing us on Thursday that he was warned when he took the job that our groups gets worse as the year goes on because all the freshman stop practicing. How bad must that make me, I've been here for four years!
