So. I was assigned for a class a 100 Solutions project in which we needed to make 100 3x3 in. drawings that dealt with the same object or issue. I elected to make things difficult for myself and make a hand-bound book.

100 pages of Barbie's tried and true careers serving as a social barometer for the expectations and aspirations of women in the workplace. Apologies in advance for COMPLETELY wonky images. I'm reshooting soon when I have access to a black dropcloth and appropriate natural lighting.

The Destructive Nature of Construction

Cummings and Basquiat could not birth me;
I came pounding out of the steel womb
of two dimensions, of talents hoarded
in the coin purse made by the flaps in my skin.
My lineage could not be Neruda;
my mother did not coddle a paintbrush
in the hand that was not rocking me.
I am suckling on my own fingers,
nibbling at my own neck, the bones snapping
as i reach, impossibly, for that point
where the scent of skin meets
the sweeping texture of ephemeral hair.
I leave that hair all over this place;
you know it by the villain red of it.
You know that I whisper poems in your ears
and stroke your soft, precious arms,
leaving smudges of colored oil on your skin.
Your eyes are losing the film of bestial youth
and you see that these are dismantled
teenage strings of sorrow and centrality

You look at your arms and say,
a child could have made that.

A Century Ago, People Had Shelves For Their Jackhammers

The angry jackhammers that carve
lines on the veins of white leaves--
where do they exist now?
I see people walking around in clothes
and I don't know them,
and therefore believe that
they do not lie awake in the lonely dark
crying at that corner where ceiling meets wall;
somewhere in that crevice slithers
the person they love, the family they lost.
Somewhere in between shots six and seven
is the sense of self, the consciousness.
There is a sticky guilt mixed in with the beer
that rushes down the tube of the bong,
and each breath they exhale that night
stinks of what they once did wrong,
so many nights ago.
These people, they think about existence
as they grind cereal on molars,
they are aware how their tongues move
inside their own mouths, along the teeth.
They think about death when they see
beautiful trees out by the bus lane.
They think about life when they set their
alarm clocks, listening to the beep of each minute.
I do not know where they put these jackhammers,
and these sliding, silent ghosts.
I think I would find them somewhere stashed

in the CD case
under the bed
pouring out of the closet.

I'm going to apply for a solo exhibition (ha good luck) at my student union. It will be my specialty: hand-drawn type + anthropomorphism = a show glorifying the merits of failure and flaws.

I need an opinion on my first series with Bob the Hedgehog, who cannot cry.

quick doodle. I think hmm the proportions are a bit charming, but wrong as per human bodies.

so I sketch him bigger to see the proportions as they will appear on an 8x10 sheet (maybe a bit smaller) I can't decide if I want to extend his legs or not, and I can never get shoulders right. And oops I forgot to draw in the briefcase again, haha.

So. Stumpy legs = endearing? What should I do to the shoulders. Grrr I'm already annoyed at voluntary work.

Alright, I took everyone off my friends list except for those people that I know in real life, and a few that have been around this journal forever.
PLEASE DON'T FREAK OUT! I will add you back if you so desire.

I'm just realizing how much of an investment I'm making in my online life at the sacrifice of my "real" life. 80 friends was just too much to keep up with, and I had trouble keeping details straight between different LJ friends.

Obviously, it was painful unchecking quite a few of you. My insides are seriously squirming right now. PLEASE don't be offended. I figured it would be easier to do it this way, to leave the ball in your courts. I just want to know really who is interested in really getting to know each other. If that describes our LJ-friendship, or how you'd like it to be, please comment.

I hope you all know that this isn't a personal thing. I'm not mad or tired of anyone, and if you're not still on my list it is NOT because I don't like you anymore or something. Obviously, anyone that wants to will be added back <3

I have been trying to figure out a "personal style" in my art, and I think that anthropomorphism is greatly appealing to me. I did this page for Illustration Friday; the theme was baby, and of course I diverted from the whole human-baby thing.

I worry a bit though that my art is turning out too much like Blake Suarez's, a graphic design major at my school who had a show full of anthromorphic paintings and screen prints. At least our styles are very different..but I would like to do a show in the Union sometime, and so I'll have to come up with something different..

Quite honestly, I'd love to do a series of drawings of people failing. There's something so beautiful about imperfection.

I am in a good mood right now :) Almost done a painting for Illustration Friday (yeesh, you'd think I'd get a move on). I must, however, critique my latest book read.

Wicked. I'm really not sure where the hype comes from, but perhaps the play version is much more spectacular than the book. While I admit there were times when I was drawn into the story and felt a connection to characters, I felt that there was this constant framework of build up and let down. The author would create all this suspense and then--oh! jump five years later in time. I figured that all the loose ends would be tied in the end, which in some cases they are, but there's a lot that's left to be desired, not so much in a it-doesn't-HAVE-to-be-answered manner, but more of a I-can't-decide-what-to-do-with-this-so-let's-forget-I-mentioned-it approach. There's a shaky attempt at parallels to American politics and Nazi Germany alike, but they don't mesh cohesively enough to be poignant. The language is strange as well, a clash of very traditional speech of older eras jumbled up with modern speech, and it doesn't translate well. I also felt that the characters were often two-dimensional stereotypes. His portrayal of the Witch is certainly three-dimensional, but he leaves much to be desired in the others.

Basically, my case is this: good plot, good point, good imagination, but nothing was carried through all the way, and it ends up being a great disappointment. Basically, it beats around the bush for four hundred pages; a "philosophical" study on evil that lacks any meat. Such a shame, as I did enjoy some of the book, though this entry would lead you to believe otherwise.

So I'm thinking of starting a bi-monthly art and writing e-zine, as if I didn't give myself enough projects to work on. I want the e-zine to be a nonpretentious showcase of how people interpret given themes. I'm striving to get away from the pretentious, overly polished drawings of deer and shit (excuse my French) that is, frankly, everywhere. So, would Ego Bruise be a good name for a humble collection of art and writing?

If you can think of something better, let me know. It should be really short, mono or bi-syllabic. Thanks a ton, guys :)

So, my mom got a new Honda and now I get to take up her old MINI VAN to Gainesville, lol. I am worried about gas prices and driving on the highway, but whatever. And I am prepared to be chastised for driving a mom van and then having everyone beg me to drive them all to Satchel's. I see it comin', UF kids. don't think I don't know you well enough. well, Kendra's the only one that reads this, nevermind..

I should let you all know that I am resisting the urge to dye my hair bright bleach blonde, for the sake of photographic purposes. I know this will permanently wreck my natural color, which I actually like, so will someone please bleach their hair for me so I can play around with you, PHOTOGRAPHICALLY speaking? ah, high hopes.

Also, I finally finished the New Testament a couple days ago, yay! I'm starting on Genesis right now. Old Testament is going to take a longggg time, but I'm less familiar with it, so it should be an interesting read/devotion.
