Stephen A. “Sid” Cassidy’s influence has been instrumental in shaping modern marathon swimming and open water swimming, most notably through his role in bringing the 10k open water event to the Olympic Games.

As Chairman of the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee, he provided critical oversight and direction for the sport’s global development, including the World Cup circuit, Grand Prix series, and World Championships. His leadership helped standardize competition rules, elevate officiating and professionalize race organization worldwide.

His Olympic contributions are equally significant. Cassidy served as Head Referee for the men’s 10k marathon swim at the 2008 Beijing Games—the inaugural Olympic event—and later as Assistant to the Head Referee at the Tokyo 2020 Games. He also played a key role in organizing and managing international competitions, including serving as race director and announcer for major events.

Before his administrative career, Cassidy was an accomplished athlete and coach. He ranked among the top professional marathon swimmers in the world and participated in record-setting English Channel swims. He later served as USA Swimming’s National Open Water Coach and contributed his expertise to athlete safety and development initiatives.

Honored with numerous awards, including USA Swimming’s highest recognition – the USA Swimming Award, Cassidy’s legacy is defined by his dedication to advancing open water swimming at every level. His induction celebrates a visionary leader whose contributions have shaped the sport on a global stage.
