I know there are a good deal of MOTHER fans on my f-list, so I figured I'd share this with them (or anyone interested in reading).

For a competition/event on The Spriter's Resource, we could submit up to 3 articles on specific themes in video games to be posted on The Videogame Resource throughout the month of May.

The category I chose was "Favorite Video Game Friendship (or romance)." Guess what game I chose? 8D

Anyways, the article focuses on Ness and Porky's relationship throughout Earthbound and a bit of MOTHER3. A lot of it is me speculating, and I probably should have put some sort of disclaimer in there about how one of the reasons the characters in the series are so wonderful is that everyone has their own interpretations of their relationships.

Leech Child Races: Oni, Gaki, and Halfbreeds

The Oni, Gaki, and Halfbreeds (Hiruko)

History:

The oni were once hunchbacked, ogre-like beasts with little or no sentience. Legends passed down through the ages say that the Oni existed when Amaterasu arrived at Jigoku, and she saw potential in them and gave them the power of wisdom.
At first the oni went around smashing everything with wooden clubs, this time just a bit more intelligently. However, after a while, the oni's intelligence grew, and they were able to accomplish tasks such as using more advanced tools and creating language. As each generation went by the race got smarter, finally becoming a generally smart, but war-obsessed, group of people. (This is when the humans arrived).
The oni learned a lot from the foreign humans - how to create more advanced weapons, how to get along with their fellow races, and how to eat with forks and knives - though the oni soon eschewed this for the tengu custom of chopsticks.
After the human genocide during Ganymede's War, the Oni were at their prime as the most powerful race in Jigoku, and they still remain such.

The gaki are a mysterious phenomenon that has appeared ever since the oni race became wise enough to keep records, and most likely before that as well. Whenever an oni was executed for doing something "bad" (in that age, usually refusal to fight, treason, etc.), the next day, a thin, grey creature who looked much like an oni - a gaki - would wander into the same city or town where the execution had happened. The gaki would have a lot of the same mannerisms as the dead oni, but at first the oni considered it a strange thing and just allowed the gaki to move on with their lives.
Gaki preferred to breed within species, and soon there was a large gaki community in many oni cities, including Akamachi, the capitol. When a famous scholar showed his research "proving" (this is still a hot topic in the debate for gaki equality) that gaki were oni who had done something terribly wrong and had been executed, the current emperor founded the first prison, and allowed the gaki to live, on one condition - that they would be inferior to the oni in all ways.
To this day gaki are used as slave labor in the Akamachi mines, and live in their own area of the city called 'the slums'. Gaki uprisings have happened during the years, but lack of major oni support has always caused them to fail.

Hiruko, or as they much prefer to be called, halfbreeds, are the result of a oni breeding with a gaki. The term hiruko was originally coined by the unofficial ruler of the gaki during the first uprising. When a gaki mother took her infant son to the gaki ruler during the Uprising, he saw it was part oni and spit on it, calling it hiruko or "Leech Child". Nowadays hiruko is a degrading term, considered terribly offensive by the halfbreeds and even some gaki. It is similar in use to the n-word.

Religion:

The oni, gaki, and halfbreeds' religion is sort of like a duotheistic paganism, usually focused around only one god. They practice ritual once a week, usually in family groups. Ritual usually consists of a food "sacrifice" for the oni, but for the gaki it consists of giving a small amount of blood from the corner of their eye.
The oni worship Amaterasu, who is the goddess who gave them sentience. As she is the goddess of the sun, rituals usually take place during the dawn in summer and the dusk in winter.
The gaki worship Tsukiyomi, the god of the moon and the brother and enemy of Amaterasu. The gaki believe that Tsukiyomi hates the oni and the way they treat the gaki, and if that they show enough devotion, that he will come to Jigoku and set things straight.
The halfbreeds usually choose to worship the deity of the group they were brought up with, however some halfbreeds worship Amaterasu and Tsukiyomi as two halves of a whole god.

Government and Social Structure:

Oni government is a pretty traditional empire/monarchy. The emperor/empress rules with a cabinet of advisors who help them sort out different issues, though the emperor's word is final.
The gaki are under the rule of the Emperor, however the gaki have a ruler who decides things that the emperor does not regarding his race. Their ruler is elected based on a vote, and is called the Grand Yasha.
Halfbreeds usually live with the oni or the gaki, depending on who their oni parent was.

The social structure is based on honor and strength. Besides the emperor, his family and his cabinet, the highest ranked oni are the police chief and officers, which are considered the most honorable non-royal oni. Next comes those who lead the army, then pretty much everyone else.
The gaki believes that everyone but the Grand Yasha and the hiruko are on even ground, considering they are all given the same job and the same amount of rations. Mothers who are pregnant or taking care of children get to stay home from the mines, and some gaki resent this, putting them below the normally even ladder.
The halfbreeds are considered one rung on the ladder below the gaki, though the gaki tend to resent halfbreeds who live with the oni more, calling them traitors.

Values:

The oni value honor, bravery, honesty, and strength above all. They believe family is important but not as important as one's individuality.
The gaki believe everyone should have the same lot in life as long as they are being enslaved. Individual values and talents are often passed over in favor of how well you fit in.
Halfbreeds, once again, tend to think the way of the race that they live with.

Language:

The oni, gaki and halfbreeds all speak Makai, the universal Jigoku language, though gaki and hiruko (and even some oni) involved in the resistance speak Yashaspeak, a secret language.

Opinions of other races:

Oni:
Oni/Tsuchigumo - the oni generally see the tsuchigumo as 'evil', and any tsuchigumo passing through Akamachi will be promptly arrested and interrogated.
Oni/Tengu - the oni and the tengu are allies, as judged by a peace treaty made a long time ago. The peace between them is still upheld to this day, to the point that tengu beggars are allowed in Akamachi.
Oni/Nekomata - The oni view the nekomata as reclusive, and they try to avoid them because they think the cats hate them because of Ganymede's War.
Oni/Ningyo - The ningyo and oni are recent allies since Ganymede's War.

Gaki:
Gaki/Tsuchigumo - Similar to oni/tsuchigumo
Gaki/Tengu - the gaki resent the tengu a bit for allying with the oni, though many tengu sympathise with the gaki and try to help them out, bringing them food, watching their children and the like.
Gaki/Nekomata - Similar to oni/nekomata
Gaki/Ningyo - The gaki don't tend to feel one way or the other about the ningyo. Some don't even know they exist.

Halfbreeds:
Depends on who they were raised with.

Pop Culture:

Oni popular music uses human-made guitars, bass guitars, drums and microphones, as well as pianos and sometimes violins. It's drum and bass-driven, but is generally similar to stuff that gets played on our radios today. If I had to compare it to one of our bands, it would be Crash Kings.
Gaki music is created with the use of kirin-hide and wooden drums, maracas, and such. It sounds similar to african tribal music. Gaki music is used primarily to tell a story, as opposed to oni music, which is used to entertain.
Gaki and oni are tends to be similar - done with pigment paint and sweeping brushstrokes. Think a much brighter version of asian brush paintings.
Oni read books, though they are mostly nonfiction. The most popular genre by far however is history and historical fiction.

Other:

As far as human technology goes, the oni try to use very little automatic weaponry and such.

Gaki (and by extension halfbreeds) cannot cry when they are sad. Tears lubricate their eyes, however they will never come out in a stream unless something is stuck in the gaki's eye. This is said to be a curse put on them by Amaterasu.

Gaki almost always suffer from a addiction - a need to do something, consume a substance, or suchforth. This affliction starts after a stressful time in the gaki's life, usually when they are sent to work in the mines. If the gaki does not act on this addiction, they will suffer withdrawl symptoms appropriate to their addiction. (Halfbreeds also have addictions)

Showing your back to someone is the gaki sign of trust.

Hey everyone. So, I've decided I need a PSP so I can play P3P, the Persona remake and any other awesome games that Atlus comes out with for it. (or other companies. Whatever).

So, to play P3P, what do I need to sell. Simple! My collection of P3 anthologies! :D

Now, if you were expecting hot Akihiko/Shinjiro action, it's best you turn back now, because none of these are very sexy. They are, however, funny (even if you don't know Japanese, a lot of the gags are visual or easy to understand). They also have some good art.

I am also selling the first season of House on DVD, as well as the first DVD volumes of FLCL (2 eps) and Paranoia Agent (4 eps). In addition I'm looking to part with ~~my Akihiko figure~~ (SOLD), my Japanese P3 strategy guide, my Kakashi (Naruto) plushie, and my Suezo (Monster Rancher) plush.

As for prices, I have 18 anthologies and I'm willing to sell them for the price of $8 each... I've never sold anything like these before, but this is close to the price I paid for them a while ago, so yeah.
The plushies are $4 each, ~~Akihiko is missing some parts (the gun arms+base) so he's $12~~. House DVD set is $20, FLCL and Paranoia Agent are both $10.

Going to post this on the fanmix community (and possibly a few MOTHER series comms). As such, re-uploaded to Mediafire.
Also, I wanted to divulge something: There was originally supposed to be a one-shot fanfic that went with this, but I'm still as unsure of my fanfic-writing abilities as I was a year ago and chickened out both times. orz

So, this is my first fanmix that I'm releasing. I've made more but I thought they sucked so I didn't put them on my journal or anything.

Characters/Pairing: 9-Volt/Penny
Summary: Just me writing. Takes place when they're both older.

Penny Crygor wasn't the kind of girl 9-Volt expected to end up with. He had always thought he'd meet his dream girl in the midnight release tourney for Brawl. Boy, was that a disaster. Maybe he should have played as a character he was actually familiar with, but no, he just had to get a taste of the new ones...

He covered his wet hair with a towel and curled up under his Mario blankets with The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy, taken from a bookshelf crammed with strategy guides and beat-up copies of Nintendo Power. The walls were plastered with posters of Samus, Zelda and Peach in pinup style, and a sealed copy of Earthbound lay on the ground next to a Super Nintendo. Earthbound being Penny's favorite Nintendo game, 9-Volt felt he had to play it before he even tried to ask her out. He would have played it sooner, but copies were extremely hard to come by, especially ones with the air freshener still intact.

About a half-hour later, 9-Volt put the book down on the end table next to his bed and picked up the phone. His hands shook as he dialed the area code for Diamond City. After a long pause, he quickly pushed seven more numbers, pulled his headphones off his head, and put the receiver up to his ear.

"Hello? Nine, is that you?". The voice from the other end of the phone was a familiar one; smooth and deep.
9-Volt sighed. "Yeah, Eighteen. It's me"
"Hey man, it's a little weird to call this late at night. Something wrong?", 18-Volt said.
"I guess. Remember two years ago? When Penny liked me?"
18-Volt's voice broke the silence. "Yeah?"
"Do you think she still does?", 9-Volt asked. He dug his fingers into the bedsheets, awaiting a yes or no answer.
"I don't know"

Even worse. Uncertainty. 9-Volt thanked his friend, and gently placed the phone back into the receiver. He slid his headphones back on, and the sweet melody of Metroid remixes lulled him to sleep.

This is mostly for the people I'm working with in a writer's group, but if you're interested in this, read the 'Leech Child excerpts' I posted during November. They don't really show the current state of the story, but...
Anyways, they just asked for simple, physical descriptions and maybe a little bit of background. So, no personality here. P:

Ganymede: Main character, member of a race known as the Hiruko, who are crossbreeds between two other races. Has a strong caffeine addiction. Orange skin, long horns and dark brown hair.

Madara: Ganymede's friend, and a tsuchigumo (human with the lower body of a spider). Has spotted patterns, and wears a red bandanna around his neck.

Kagami: A female gaki (a offshoot race from the oni). Ganymede's love interest. Wears elaborate robes.

Daijiro: Ganymede's younger (half-)brother, an oni (main race in the world, horned, muscular humans with red or blue skin). Gets captured by Karasu, but manages to escape and isn't seen for most of the story. (Plays a part in the sequel, most probably).

Karasu: Daijiro's captor, a tengu (birdlike humanoid). Crow-like feathers. Was engaged to Aoi until she disappeared. Has visions of the future.

Aoi: The main villian of the story. Is obsessed with her father who left her at a young age, and wants to become a god because of an ancient song verse stating that gods know no pain. Tends to be a total bitch, for lack of a better word.

Nano 2009 excerpts

A winter breeze blew through the brick city of Akamachi, causing whatever doors were open to creak. The darkness crept into every house and building, snow whirling above the heads of whoever dared to go outside. In the streets, crowds of horned people gathered, their skin colors ranging from charcoal grey to pale white. The sound of flames came from seemingly everywhere at once, shooting out of the hands of the horned people, lighting up the sadistic grins they wore. The fire quickly engulfed the few wooden buildings in the town, leaving a trail of smoke that could be seen for miles.
The crowds formed into a single group of people, gathered around the largest, most extravagant building in Akamachi, hellbent on one mission - destroying the palace and killing the empress. Emerging from the crowd was a humanoid bird, wearing a simple blue robe. He ruffled his black feathers, coming the closest a beaked creature could to a smile.
"My gaki friends", he began. "Today will be the day you overthrow your oni enslavers. Today is the day of gaki freedom, skree!"
The hundreds of gaki in the crowd began to scream and cheer. The crow-man threw up his hands and cried to the clouded moon while the gaki ran by him, breaking the main palace door open.
The invasion had begun.

Kagami sat alone by the entrance to the abandoned town, tapping her foot and looking around warily. Her contact would show eventually... or so she hoped. He was somewhat fickle with how he entered the area in their usual meetings. Showing up in front of her wasn't enough, jumping down from a tree branch or appearing in a puff of smoke seemed to be the way to go for Karasu.
A figure approached from behind the gaki woman, jumping across the roofs of the abandoned city like it was part of a child's game. The figure landed gracefully, forcefully grabbing Kagami by the shoulder. The gaki spun around, her brows furrowed.
"Goddamnit Karasu, I-". Her voice was met by a lump in her throat when she saw the cat-eared man that stood before her. He flicked his forked tail several times, making a motorlike purring noise with his throat.
"You suprised not to see Karasu here?", the catlike man said.
"Who the hell are you?", Kagami said, swallowing the lump and staring into the stranger's eyes. "I thought nekomata were dead"
The figure grinned, pointed canines showing. "You'd like to think a lot of things that aren't true. Life isn't always black and white"
"You didn't answer the question", Kagami said. "I'd like to know you are, or else I'm just going to assume you're not my friend"
"My name is Kaito. I'd like you to remember it at the last person you'll ever meet"
The forked parts of the nekomata's tail began to twitch uncontrollably, the ground rumbling in unison. The earth cracked open, two adult gaki rising up from it.
"You remember them, right?", Kaito said. "They sure remember you. In fact, they would love to repay the favor that you gave them so long ago"
"Mother? Father? You're alive?"
"Yes, those are your parents, Kagami", Kaito said.
The two gaki approached their daughter, the female gripping Kagami in an embrace.
"Mother... what are you doing?". Her mother did not answer, but began to sing an ancient gaki lullaby.
Rabbit, small rabbit, why run so fast?
The day is long gone, the day has passed
For now it is time for goodnight
And I will see you at the morning light.
The gaki woman continued to repeat the lullaby until Kagami burst into tears, kneeling on the ground, her tears wetting the dark brown earth.
"Mother... I want to go home... take me home..."
Kagami's parents looked at each other, nodding. They each gripped one of their daughter's shoulders, both of them singing the lullaby the whole time.
"Stop it, Father.. I feel weak". Kagami's breath came in deep, concentrated inhalations. Her arms began to shake, giving way to the ground below, body collapsing onto the dirt.
"Mother... Father... please, stop"
Kagami, Kagami, why run away?
You have done wrong, and now you must pay
We hope you have enjoyed your last days
For we still love you, forever and always
Kagami's eyes closed and did not open. The two gaki took their hands off her limp shoulders, the heat fading from her body even more rapidly now. Kaito, from his lofty perch on top of one of the abandoned buildings, snapped his fingers. With the passing wind, Kagami's parents dissappeared, leaving nothing but a single, dead body, mouth formed into a smile, in their wake.

Madara's face was still wet from tears rather than the torrential rain that had stopped when they got back to camp. He was kneeling on the wet grass overlooking the cliff, bawling like a child who had lost a doll.
"Those rocks down there must seem so inviting right now", Aoi said, walking up to the tsuchigumo as he contined to cry. He looked over at the tengu woman, nodding. It was all he could do.
"Why'd she have to die?", he said between sobs. "Why does ANYONE have to die?"
"Something kills them. Old age kills them. Sickness kills them. People kill them", Aoi said.
"Who killed Kagami then, huh? Nobody saw it but her. Whoever killed her... I...". Madara began to wail.
Aoi put her hand on his shoulder. "Calm down, Madara. Let's think this through. Do you remember who with Kagami right before she died?"
"Well, first there was me... then you... then Ganymede, right?"
"Bingo! So the last one to see her before she died was Ganymede"
"Yeah... then a couple minutes later we found her dead", Madara said.
"Do you understand what this means, Madara?", Aoi said. "We know for sure neither you or I could have killed her. Ganymede was the last one to see her. Therefore..."
"...He's the killer?", Madara said.
Aoi smiled, and Madara's eyes widened in fright. "This... this can't be possible! Why?", he said.
"We can't say for sure, but it's the only possible lead we have. And don't you want to see Kagami's killer put to justice?", Aoi said.
"I... I do", Madara said.
"Then there's only one possible choice", Aoi brought her face to Madara's ear. "You have to kill Ganymede"

The creeping shadow above Ganymede's bed came closer and closer still, its eight legs shifting impaitently on the floor. The figure took the red bandanna from around its neck and carefully tightened it around the halfbreed's head, covering his eyes.
The figure brought its face close to Ganymede's neck, fangs bearing down on their target. Ganymede, in a move of instinct, slapped the face away, bolting up and removing the bandanna from his head. He fumbled with a match in the darkness for several seconds, but eventually the lamp got lit.
"Madara?", Ganymede said. His best friend was standing above his bed, fangs still extended.
"Yeah, it's me", the tsuchigumo said, with somewhat of a muffled voice because of his fangs being out. He picked up his bandanna from the floor and began to walk out of Ganymede's tent.
"Wait", Ganymede said, grabbing Madara by the shoulder. "Did you just try to kill me?"
"I guess", Madara said, pulling his fangs back into his mouth.
They stayed silent for a second, then Ganymede's fist flew towards Madara's face. The tsuchigumo was hit by the full force of the blow, knocked backwards, and left to regain his balance while Ganymede began to circle around him.
"What the FUCK is your problem?", the halfbreed screamed. He punched his friend again. Madara made no effort to dodge, and the skin around his eye began to turn bright red. "Who put you up to this? WHO?"
"Nobody", Madara said. Ganymede clawed at Madara, leaving scratch marks on his face. Madara winced, tears welling up in his eyes.
"Why did you do this, then, you son of a bitch? WHY?"
Madara began to sob as Ganymede scratched him again and again. His teeth clenched and face covered in red lines and tears, Madara whispered the three words Ganymede would remember for the rest of his life-
"I hate you"

Sudbury School Stories Intro and #1 - Carmen (Sideways Stories from Wayside School parody)

Based on the book "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" by Louis Sachar

Introduction
This stapled-paper shameless-parody "book" contains 30 stories about the students and staff at the Hudson Valley Sudbury School. But before we tell you these stories you should probably know this:
The Hudson Valley Sudbury School is not a normal school. There are no classes, no classrooms, and no periods. Kids do (almost) whatever they want with their free time.
It can be said that these stories are really fucked up. That is most likely true. But if I told the students at Sudbury stories of public schools, they would think YOU was fucked up. That is also probably true.

1: Carmen
Carmen had a brown bob hairdo and liked to sing. She was the newest staff member at the Hudson Valley Sudbury School.
"If you are bad", she said, "Instead of going to JC, I'll do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight, and turn you into pillows!" Carmen didn't hate children, but she liked pillows more.
Emmet and Otto couldn't read. They didn't know that the sign said "No food in the computer room". They brought Reeses into the computer room.
One day Carmen caught them. She danced around the room, kissed the wall, fell on the floor, and turned Emmet and Otto into pillows.
"That's not fair!", Thor said. "They can't read"
Carmen danced around the room, kissed the wall, fell on the floor, and turned Thor into a pillow.
Carmen walked away into the Blackboard room. She saw Emma spraying air freshener across the room.
'Rule 5.38, Smelly Sprays!", Carmen shouted. She danced around, kissed the wall, fell on the floor, and turned Emma into a pillow.
"That's not fair, this room smells terrible!", Jacob said. He opened a window to try and waft the smell out.
"Opening a window in the winter without PPC permission!", Carmen said. She danced around, kissed the wall, fell on the floor, and turned Jacob into a pillow.
Evan and Morgan were too scared to do anything. Soren didn't care. He hated people, but liked pillows.
For the rest of the day, all of the students behaved. Jeff was suprised there were no JC reports the next day.
But Emmet, Otto, Thor, Emma, and Jacob couldn't go home. They were pillows. They could talk to each other, but there's not much to say when you just sit around on the couch. Their parents were very worried.
The next day, Zack K and Zach R were late for school. Carmen turned them into pillows.
Onion sneezed on Soren. He was turned into a pillow.
Oak said "God bless you!" when Onion sneezed. He was turned into a pillow.
Zack L, the attendance clerk, walked into school late. He looked around at all the pillows on the couches.
"Well, it looks like Carmen bought us more pillows! How nice" He walked away to go to Hurley Ridge.
The next day, all the students had been turned into pillows. Carmen was very happy.
"Now I can decorate the school", she said.
"PILLOW FIGHT!", Collin shouted. He jumped off the couch and hit Carmen in the face. The rest of the students-turned-pillows followed suit.
"Stop, or I'll write you up!", Carmen said. But there was nothing she could do. Nobody could write up pillows.
There was only one thing she could do. She dropped to the floor, kissed the wall, danced around the room, and turned all the pillows back into students.
The next day, the students all voted Carmen off of the staff.
"That's it!", she said. "I'm turning you back into pillows!"
But all the students entered the Mirror Room just in time, and Carmen herself was turned into a pillow.
Zack L walked into the Mirror Room. "Where's Carmen?", he asked.
None of the students answered.
"Well, I'm tired. I'll sit on this pillow"
Zack L took the pillow that was really Carmen, tossed it on the floor, and sat on it.

The Rayner Legacy Gen 1.1

So, I felt like starting a Sims 2 legacy. D8 I kinda failed, considering I couldn't have the walls up (for some reason, I can't see ANYTHING with the walls up...) and I only have the Nightlife xpac.
This is my first legacy, so forgive me if I do anything wrong D8
I dropped down a basic house, made our lovely founder and ploppled him into the world of Sims. Let's see how he does...

First thing he does is be dissappointed about the nipple-light on his wall.

...Seriously, they're just lights...

I think all my sims have some kind of gnome fetish... All the ones that write in their diaries write about gnomes.

The farmlands buzzed by through the large glass windows of the U-Haul truck. In the passenger seat, a girl lay asleep, long auburn hair strewn across the back of her cushioned seat. An older-looking woman was at the wheel of the truck, brown eyes drooping as they grew closer to their destination. Her hands fiddled with the dial as the volume on the radio was turned up.
"Good Afternoon, Atlantic County!", a sing-songy voice said. The girl in the passenger seat opened her blue eyes slowly as the weather forecast for the next day came over the truck's speakers.
"Mom, do you always have to wake me up like that?", she said. The girl yawned, and her mom chuckled.
"Fiona, this is how I always wake you up"
"Leave me alone", Fiona mumbled. She attempted to cover her face with her long hair, while her mother laughed again.
"You're going to have to wake up soon, anyways. We're almost there"
Fiona looked up through the side window and saw a faded green sign - Welcome to Egg Harbor Township. She rubbed her freckled cheeks as the suburbs came into view.
"So, this is where we're going to live?"
"Yes. Our house is on Timber Drive", her mom said as the van turned into a small suburban development - Great Pines South.
Houses painted in various shades of brown and blacktop driveways surrounded by pine trees appeared on all sides of the small orange U-Haul truck. It made another turn, this time onto a street marked 'Dead End'.
"Is this our street?", Fiona asked. Her mother nodded as the truck pulled into a driveway with several larger trucks already there.
"We're here", her mom said. She stopped the truck, unbuckled and stepped out. Fiona did the same, watching as people dressed in brown suits moved their furniture into their new home.
"Excuse me, miss", a man's voice said. Fiona's mother turned around. A man in a black button-down shirt handed her a piece of paper on a clipboard and a pen. "Sign here, please"
Fiona's mother scribbled her name on the line on the bottom of the paper. Fiona smiled. She knew that signature anywhere - it looked like gibberish, but it really said 'Joan Taylor'.
"Thank you, ma'am", the man said. He grabbed the clipboard and pen and walked away, motioning for Fiona and her mother to follow.
"This is your new home", the man said, smiling. He gestured to the beige house in front of them. There were stone steps leading up to the door, and Joan walked up to the white entrance and asked the man for the housekey. He obliged, and she opened the door.
"It's beautiful", she said. The red carpet and white paint looked brand new, as if they had just been put in that day. She walked inside. "Fiona, come see the house"
"In a minute, mom", she called back. Fiona was busy at the side yard, looking at a large spot where no grass seemed to be growing. She kneeled down and drew a smiley face into the dirt.
"Hey! What're you doing digging up my grave!?", a man's voice shouted. Fiona looked up in alarm, seeing an old, bearded man holding a shovel looking down at her.
"N-nothing, sir", Fiona stuttered. "I didn't know that was where you were buried. Please, forgive me"
"Why should I?", the man yelled back. "I don't go around digging where you're buried, do I!?"
"Sir, I think you're confused. I'm not a-"
The man brought his shovel down with such force that Fiona shrunk back, even if she knew it couldn't hurt her. She then noticed the man staring at her, and pretended to faint.
"Serves her right", the bearded man said. He faded from view, and Fiona opened her eyes. Blowing her blunt bangs out of her face, she saw a boy around her age looking down at her.
"What were you doing?"
"Nothing", Fiona said, shivering. It was November, and the sun was starting to set. Fiona was surprised it wasn't snowing.
"No, I mean, who were you talking to?", the boy asked. Fiona looked up at the boy, who stroked the black bangs covering one eye out of the way so he could see better.
"Nobody"
"Why are you laying on the ground, then?"
Fiona was at a loss for words. She had been able to explain talking to spirits before, but fainting because of one?
She heard her mom calling her again. "I'll tell you later", Fiona said. The boy looked at her, puzzled, then turned away, his jacket blowing in the cold breeze.
