Pipelines Part 4 - UAF Mission Architecture to Confluence Reports — Automatically

Systems engineers invest enormous effort building architecture models. A well-constructed UAF model captures mission capabilities, operational activities, services, resources, and system dependencies with precision. And yet, that value rarely reaches the people who need it most — in two distinct ways.

In Part 2, we demonstrated a digital pipeline that generated periodic reports of requirement-test case assignments and results from an existing digital thread. In this post, we take on a more difficult task to automate, creating and maintaining the digital thread itself.

Pipelines Part 2 – Gap Analysis between Requirements and Tests

Demonstrating measurable ROI from digital engineering is just as important in driving enterprise adoption as customer mandates, e.g. DoDI 5000.97. In particular, the concept of “autonomous digital labor” that can replace or reduce human effort on routine or non-creative tasks provides a clear value proposition for management buy-in.

In Parts 1-10 of this blog series, we built a digital thread for an autonomous vehicle system to demonstrate how a federation of models in different software tools can become a unified specification of the system. Parts 11-13 demonstrated how Syndeia Web Browser’s standard reports and visualizations allowed a user to access that information. In Parts 14 and 15, we started to build a custom reporting capability using direct call to the Syndeia Cloud REST API, initially through a Jupyter Notebook and then through a digital pipeline built in the Airflow platform.

The value of this information is greatest if it can be run regularly so that trends in the project can be tracked and potential problems identified early. This kind of repetitive work is familiar from the DevSecOps approach to software engineering and can be automated through the use of digital pipelines.

Syndeia has been developed as an API-first enterprise application, i.e. the full capabilities of the software are exposed through an open REST API with the understanding that the users will develop custom user experiences in addition to those provided by Intercax. In that way, the wide range of stakeholder information needs can be met without waiting for vendor releases. The best open source and commercial platforms for data science, business analytics, and visualization can be applied to the data available to Syndeia.

A key function of Digital Threads is to be able to answer questions about project status in real-time without the overhead of data collection, status reports and meetings. In this post, we discuss some of the Syndeia Web Dashboard’s reporting capabilities as applied to our Autonomous Vehicle project.
