Types &#038; Advantages"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Be it instrumentation, electronics, or electrical engineering, a <strong>feedback control system<\/strong> plays a very important role. As the name implies, it is a system that controls anything based on feedback. You can also call it a <strong>closed-loop control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Anything which takes feedback into consideration and then controls the output is called a feedback control system. Let us have a look at this post at its detailed working principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Feedback Control System?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>feedback control system<\/strong> basically has five components \u2013 <strong>input (set value), output (process variable), process being controlled, sensing devices, and actuating \/ control devices<\/strong>. Have a look at the below figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain this with a simple example of an <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/types-of-air-conditioning-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">air conditioner<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following things \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Temperature Setpoint set by the remote controller<\/strong> \u2013 Input<\/li><li><strong>Temperature<\/strong> \u2013 Output<\/li><li><strong>Temperature sensor<\/strong> \u2013 sensing device<\/li><li><strong>AHU<\/strong> \u2013 process being controlled<\/li><li><strong>Compressor<\/strong> \u2013 control device<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, relate this to the concept we are trying to explain. You set the temperature at 26 \u00b0C. You start the AC. On starting, it is found by the sensor that the current temperature is 32 \u00b0C. Based on this feedback, the controller inside will start the <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/rca-compressor-did-not-trip-on-suction-pressure-low-low\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compressor<\/a>. The compressor will try to bring down the temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1834\" height=\"1032\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/What-is-a-Feedback-Control-System.png\" alt=\"What is a Feedback Control System\" class=\"wp-image-57244\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Simultaneously, the sensor is continuously giving its feedback to the controller. When the current temperature has finally reached its set point, the compressor will turn off. Based on the turning-off condition, two cases can then happen \u2013 either the temperature will increase or will continue to decrease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the temperature is again found to be increasing, then the compressor will again turn on to bring it down. And, when the temperature is decreasing, then no action will be taken unless the temperature increases again. This is the basic <strong>concept of the feedback control system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is found that the calculation is mainly dependent on two main factors \u2013 <strong>required value and current value. <\/strong>The resulting difference between them is called the error. Based on this error, the controller decides how to manipulate the controlling device so that it will try to bring the error to zero after a certain stage. This is what the <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/feedback-control-principle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feedback control<\/a> system works on. It is a real-time calculation. You have to control one process, but if you know how the process is currently running, then you will be accurately able to handle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A very popular example is <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/how-to-configure-pid-in-siemens-plc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PID<\/a> (proportional integrative and derivative). PID controls the process either by digital output or analog output. The example we discussed earlier was a digital output (compressor \u2013 on or off). In the analog output, the output is varied proportionally to get more control in the system (like an actuator valve or VFD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Feedback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>Positive feedback: &#8211;<\/strong> In this type, the feedback signal is added with the input signal in the controller. It is a very least used type, as it has less control over the error.<\/li><li><strong>Negative feedback: &#8211;<\/strong> In this type, the feedback signal is subtracted from the input signal in the controller. It is the most used type, as it has great accuracy and control in the process.
