It depends on the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/peripheral-inputs-and-outputs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PLC<\/a> you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-test-and-process-modes\">Test and Process Modes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s find out where these functions are residing in the PLC software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open TIA PORTAL. Go to \u201cDevice and Network\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1253\" height=\"705\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Siemens-PLC-Device-and-Network.png\" alt=\"Siemens PLC Device and Network\" class=\"wp-image-50488\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, select the CPU and go to the \u201cproperties tab\u201d. This is a safety CPU which contains operating mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, in the \u201cgeneral\u201d tab section you can find \u201coperating mode\u201d as you can see in the below window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1253\" height=\"705\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Siemens-Test-Mode.png\" alt=\"Siemens Test Mode\" class=\"wp-image-50489\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside operating mode, you can find two options<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Process mode<br>2. Test mode<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selection by default comes in test mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-test-mode\">Test Mode:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see in the above window that selection is at by default test mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In test mode you can perform test functions means you can <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/monitor-and-modify-variables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modify and monitor<\/a> variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the test function, you can perform every function without any restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it requires greater scan time. So, if a user program is in test mode then it must have a larger scan time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you find trouble using modify and monitoring that means selection is made to process mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-process-mode\">Process Mode:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see in the below window that selection is now made to Process mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1376\" height=\"774\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Siemens-Process-Mode.png\" alt=\"Siemens Process Mode\" class=\"wp-image-50490\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, you can change the <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationforum.com\/t\/interval-time-within-a-cycle-using-ladder-logic\/8619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cycle time<\/a>. You can set a cycle time between 5 and 65535 ms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It restricts modify and monitor function to reduce cycle time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Step by step programming execution can\u2019t be performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No call condition is permitted to make sure that scan time can\u2019t exceed the set cycle time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It won\u2019t allow changes to be made in the programming
