Capacitance is equal to the amount of charge that can be stored divided by the applied voltage, as shown in below Equation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30008\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Capacitance.png\" alt=\"Capacitance\" width=\"242\" height=\"89\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">where<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C = capacitance (F)<br \/>\nQ = amount of charge (C)<br \/>\nV = voltage (V)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The unit of capacitance is the farad (F). A farad is the capacitance that will store one coulomb of charge when one volt is applied across the plates of the capacitor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The dielectric constant (K) describes the ability of the dielectric to store electrical energy. Air is used as a reference and is given a dielectric constant of 1. Therefore, the dielectric constant is unitless. Some other dielectric materials are paper, teflon, bakelite, mica, and ceramic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The capacitance of a <a href=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/capacitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capacitor<\/a> depends on three things.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Area of conductor plates<\/li>\n<li>Separation between the plates<\/li>\n<li>Dielectric constant of insulation material<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The below Equation illustrates the formula to find the capacitance of a capacitor with two parallel plates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30010\" src=\"https:\/\/instrumentationtools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/capacitance-of-a-capacitor-with-two-parallel-plates.png\" alt=\"capacitance of a capacitor with two parallel plates\" width=\"391\" height=\"82\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">where<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C = capacitance<br \/>\nK = dielectric constant<br \/>\nA = area<br \/>\nd = distance between the plates<br \/>\n8.85 x 10<sup>-12<\/sup> = constant of proportionality<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Example 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Find the capacitance of a capacitor that stores 8 C of charge at 4 V.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>C = Q\/V<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C = 8\/4 = 2F<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Example 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the charge taken on by a 5F capacitor at 2 volts?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q = CV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Q = 5F x 2 V = 10 C<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Example 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is the capacitance if the area of a two plate mica capacitor is 0.0050 m<sup>2<\/sup> and the separation between the plates is 0.04 m?
