My friends are so cool....

I scored a photo/press pass to go to the Detroit's Electronic Music Festival this year. I am super excited especially cause Phoenix will be doing video work on the old school industrial night and lots of my friends are participating and just visiting. Check out the list of artists. Wow! And Mutek is next week! Can't wait.

~

Also Bryan is in Time Out this week.

Freaks come out at night
MAJOR KEYS Jan Jelinek hauls his sizable supply of synths to the Bunker.

Brush with fete
“It seems like everyone freaks out about the Winter Music Conference every year,” laments the Bunker’s DJ Spinoza, referring to the big dance-music clambake held annually in Miami. “But Detroit and Montreal get very little love.” He has a valid point. The WMC is basically a hooch-soaked hoedown where you might happen to hear some cool music, and all those open bars tend to attract the always-thirsty music press. But the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (a.k.a. Movement), which takes its inspiration from the Motor City’s status as the birthplace of techno, and Montreal’s MUTEK powwow, which focuses on minimal and experimental textures, have appreciation of music—rather than the search for free ethanol—as their raisons d’être. (Check out demf.com and mutek.ca for more on the events.)

This year’s DEMF runs from Saturday 27 through Monday 29; MUTEK kicks off Wednesday 31 and runs through June 4. But Spinoza isn’t waiting around. He’s invited two of electronic music’s finest—who happen to both be playing at the festivals—to the Bunker bash on Friday 26 as a local prelude to the two confabs. The fiesta features Zip, co-owner of the influential Perlon label, who makes rubbery microhouse with Sammy Dee as Pantytec and produces solo under the Dimbiman name. He’s also a superb DJ, which is a good thing, as that’s what he’ll be doing at the Bunker on Friday 26. And Spinoza’s scored a real coup by securing the services of one of the sound’s most celebrated figures, ~scape recording artist Jan Jelinek, who works in a myriad of styles under the Gramm and Farben monikers, among others. He’ll be performing a live version of his latest album, Kosmischer Pitch, with collaborators Andrew Pekler and Hanno Leichtman. The party will surely be packed, which raises a question: Why can’t New York have something equivalent to DEMF or MUTEK? The answer, according to Spinoza, is simple. “It’s just way too expensive,” he says, “to put all these artists up in hotels here.”

©2006 Time Out New York

Whitney Biennial Opening

I walked through the (truly disappointing) Whitney Biennial with my art dealer within an hour. We went to the fancypants opening together hoping to see something exciting but the only things I liked I had seen before at galleries in the past year. What a bummer.... I am going to go back to watch all the video and film works when it is less crowded.

Marilyn Minter
Deep Throat, 2004
C-Print on Aluminum
93 x 127 cm

Here is an email I just got from Gregory:

Boy, 12, Sticks Gum on $1.5M Painting

When I was eleven I went on a school field trip to the same museum and touched Van Gogh's painting of the sailor. I mean that kind of texture just demanded my finger! It wasn't until I climbed atop of the Picasso sculpture that I was apprehended. But It was the same sculpture that had been on a TV commercial a year earlier, where all of the kids sang "you gotta have art" as they too sat atop it. Alas my commercial defense went no where with the security guards. Art should be touched goddamnit!

Helen Frankenthaler, Blue Atmosphere

Today in History

From Naomi:

January 17, 1886 - Eccentric gay British novelist Ronald Firbank was
born in London. He wore two dressing gowns at once, painted his nails,
lived in an apartment painted black, and owned only books bound in
blue leather. He was known for a series of novels peopled with the
most remarkable characters - a king with the air of a tired
pastry-cook, a choirboy with the vaguely distraught air of a kitten
that has seen visions, a musician with a voice like cheap scent,
several young gentlemen of great and insolent beauty, and an
extraordinarily large number of clergymen. He dined only on champagne
and flower petals and died malnourished.

=====================

This public service announcement brought to you by greengrocers for
the preservation of decadent poets.

Gawker’s 123 Reasons to Love New York Right Now

Given the bitter weather and the spectacularly frustrating transit strike, this week’s New York provides a much needed warm fuzzy with its “123 Reasons to Love New York Right Now” cover story. After all, we all sometimes need a reminder as to why we put up with the bullshit.

Alas, as we read the piece and grew infected with the warm glow of lust for NYC, we realized that there was a lot missing from the listicle. Sure, we love Central Park and squirrels and fancy shoes, but those things don’t really get to the heart of why we adore New York so totally and completely. In fact, we can think of 123 completely different reasons to love New York, all of which make a bit more sense to us. After the jump, Gawker’s 123 Reasons to Love New York Right Now.

1. Because we scorn the fat.

2. Because we can drink until 4 AM.

3. Because we have our drugs delivered to our doors.

4. Because all we have to do is walk down the street in order to be propositioned for sex.

5. Because we get to push tourists if we’re late for work.

6. Because we only pretend to recycle.

7. Because Tompkins Square park is still friendly to junkies.

8. Because whether you make $50k or $200k, you’re still “middle class.”

9. Because “fuck” is intrinsic to our local dialect.

10. Because there’s a Starbucks on every block.

11. Because you can get anything you want on Craigslist.

12. Because Anderson Cooper.

13. Because our restaurants are so cramped, we can hear if our neighbor is being an asshole.

14. Because you can live in the same place for 10 years and never have to see or meet your neighbors

15. Because a pink paper like the New York Observer can survive.

16. Because assistants.

17. Because everyone’s Gay.

18. Because we can make someone like Blackface Jesus into a celebrity.

19. Because sometimes it smells like maple syrup.

20. Because there’s always a secret room behind the VIP room.

21. Because we can get fake TiVo for $9.95/mo.

22. Because our tabloids are considered newspapers.

23. Because the transit strike keeps us from really working.

24. Because Jocelyn Wildenstein exists.

25. Because you can go to the East Village Baths and not get raped.

26. Because David Cross’s imposters live here.

27. Because Brooklyn is for domesticating.

28. Because i-bankers and hipsters can peacefully coexist.

29. Because there’s always a free drink available somewhere.

30. Because we know Sex and the City is a crock of shit.

31. Because we know Friends is a crock of shit.

32. Because it only takes $30 million to launch and burn a magazine.

33. Because we think Vitamin Water is a real beverage.

34. Because we never have to shovel snow (unless it’s coke).

35. Because we all know we’re actually better than Tinsley Mortimer.

36. Because “road trip” just means Ikea.

37. Because even Lenny Kravitz’s toilet gets clogged.

38. Because smoking is encouraged.

39. Because we only have one mall, and it’s not any good anyhow.

40. Because people read.

41. Because we invented PNP.

42. Because words like Otto Tootsie Plohound make sense to us.

43. Because we eat McDonald’s ironically.

44. Because ANYONE can lie to Page Six.

45. Because Jews.

46. Because you can take a dump at the Apple Store.

47. Because you can buy anything, even a stolen baby.

48. Because mani/pedis are affordable.

49. Because George Whipple.

50. Because our public opinion can turn on a dime.

51. Because real estate is a professional sport.

52. Because only black is the new black.

53. Because it’s acceptable to Shoot the Freak.

54. Because our pigeons have rabies.

55. Because you only need a Village Voice to get a chick with a dick.

68. Because anybody can be a DJ.

69. Because even if you can only play “Wish You Were Here” on the guitar, you can make a few bucks at a subway station.

70. Because Robin Byrd.

71. Because everybody knows the 1-800-Mattress song.

72. Because sometimes it’s just fun to give tourists wrong directions.

73.
Christmas

I woke up Christmas day with my kitten curled up in a little loaf of cuteness purring next to me. She is the best Christmas present I could ask for. I had a wonderful Christmas eve and day with my family. Full of good times, good moods, good food.

I came back into the city to meet up with some friends at a bar right near my house. It ended up being a raging party (it might have been the only thing happening in the village last night). The best part of the evening was hanging out with Sandy. I met her when I was 2 years old at a Montessori school in Manhattan. We were born ten days apart. Our mothers are good friends and I pretty much spent every single Halloween with her until we went off to college. Last night we shared hilarious stories about our childhood. Sandy would not stop buying me drinks. At some point I couldn't even finish them. Sandy is one of the most generous people I know, like me, she grew up pretty poor but her mom tried to give her anything she ever wanted. I had one of the best Christmas nights with friends ever. I thought that there would be a bar full of strays who hate their families, but it was just a bunch of people who actually grew up in the city and were looking for something fun to do. We drank and danced and had a blast.

Happy happies

Dearest Friends,
Merry Merries to you all! I hope you are surrounded by wonderful people and good food. May your new year be filled with love & health & happiness.

Rum Balls

These are so yummy I had to limit myself to one a day. They are vegan and you don't have to cook them. I doubled the ingredients so that I could give them out to my friends and family. Thanks to Angela for the recipe.

Ingredients:
1 cup of Vanilla Wafers
1 cup fine granulated Sugar
1/4 cup confectioners (powdered) Sugar
1 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans (save a bit to roll them in when you are done)
2 tablespoons of Cocoa
2 tablespoons Corn Syrup
1/4 cup of dark Rum

Finely chop the pecans and vanilla wafers in a blender or food processor. Mix all ingredients together. Make small rum balls and roll them with more chopped pecans. Add more corn syrup or rum if the mix gets too dry. Dust with powdered sugar.
Enjoy!

sweetness

I am a mine of candy, a sugar plantation;
I am the sugar cane and the sugar eater.
-Rumi

I have found this honey of honeys.
Let this hive of mine be given away.
-Yunus Emre

The past two weeks have been pretty eventful. Between the sweetness of my new kitten and the endless trail of Christmas/birthday parties I feel like the sugary taste of decadence is stuck in my mouth for good. Here is a re-cap for myself. Forgive my excessively long post....

I went to see Glodfrapp with Lori and some other fine ladies, they put on a great show. I was also super excited to see Larry Tee DJing before they went on. Goldfrapp started with the song Train as with two dancers in bikinis wearing wolf masks performed on stage. It was like I was watching an Angela Carter story come to life in a modern day disco. The dancers came back later on wearing mirrorball horse heads made of cut mirrors. Amazingly erotic and playful, they sounded better than I expected them to be!

The next night was our first Kiss & Tell, were I had my DJ debut at Trash bar with Lori. I was pretty nervous, even though we were taking turns playing our sets or just alternating songs. We have such similar music taste and we seem to get along well behind the mixing board. Special thanks to Abigail, Ted, Zoh, Jamey, Bryan and the other talented Wolf + Lamb boys for coming out. I really appreciate your support.

Then on Thursday night I went to see Depeche Mode with Jamey. Bless her and her generous Christmas present for me! The last time I saw them I was 15 years old and it was for the Violator tour. I decked out in my new Marilyn black halter dress and sported my opera glasses so we could carefully look at Dave's pecks as he danced on stage. Jamey and I felt like dirty old ladies as well peered at the band on stage through my mother of pearl binoculars, we had so much fun. When they followed Personal Jesus with Enjoy the Silence I was totally blissed out. I like being overly dressed at the MSG, drinking champagne in plastic cups, among the very normal looking crowd. Depeche Mode fans have all grown up into adults, or perhaps younger people can't afford to pay for such an expensive concert! Afterwards I stopped by at Naomi's 30th birthday party and said hi to her and Zoh. Then I was off to the Depeche Mode afterparty with pretty Angela....

That weekend I has some good Christmas cheer at Emily's house where we were entertained by my kitten and played games. On Sunday I had a small tree decorating party at my mom's place and then we went to see Walk the Line. The movie was incredible, I loved every moment of it even though it made me cry several times. Later Abi and I went off to Byte in the most ridiculous x-mas inspired outfit, were I tried to dance away my bad mood.

The next day I went to Sabree's going away/birthday party. I will really miss her and I hope she does a great job at her new photojournalist job in New Orleans. It was a good thing that I went to her party cause I got to meet the owner of the bar and subsequently I got a paying dj gig! Last Friday my second try was much better, I actually seemed to know what I was doing. I kept them kids dancing (often with songs I know many of the people in the crowd had never heard of) till 4am when I topped off the night with some good old Mary Poppins which made them all go off the hook. People seemed to have a great time. I was a bit sad that only a few of my close friends came by even though the place was totally crowded. WTF I got 8 independent requests for Madonna songs, and some other terrible requests for songs I would never even think of playing. I asked one person if they were specifically trying to get me to clear the room? Thank god Abigail was there to entertain/ward off the annoying boys as I stayed busy picking songs.

Don't want to forget our full moon dinner party to celebrate Lori's birthday. We topped off the evening by seeing the luminous new version King Kong with over a dozen friends.

I had two different cookie baking parties here in my tiny kitchen. The one last night was really fun. Angela and I made about 12 dozen batches of Vegan Chocolate-Chocolate Chip cookies and Rum Balls. Flaming Fire Patrick came by to entertain us and do some taste testing. We hung out till morning talking and and watching the news as the confirmation of the Transit Strike broke.

Going to brave the cold and run all my work errands now by foot, which is what I usually do.

Everyone I love likes to bite.

Are You a Hipster?

hahhahaha....
sad but true

Gawker Quiz: Are You a Hipster? (Valid Only 12/05)
READ MORE: hipsters, nightlife, quiz

Sure, there are plenty of those “Are you a hipster?” quizzes out there, but isn’t there an obvious problem with all of them? After all, the scene — like a baby with the brown-apple splatters — is always changing, which instantly dates such quizzes and renders them useless. Think about it: does anybody still hang out at Enid’s or think Pianos is hipster ground zero? Of course not. Have you ever even heard of Pianos? Probably just in passing, when you hear old folks reminisce about the good ol’ days of 2003.

So how does a young New Yorker know right this minute if they are a hipster or not? Simple: by taking our spanking-new quiz. After the jump, Blue States Lose mastermind Joey Arak guides you down the path to self-discovery.

Give yourself 1 point for each question you answer yes, or for each statement you agree with. Just like Cosmo, add up your points and check your results at the end.

1) Have you ever commented on Brooklyn Vegan?

2) Without looking it up, can you fill in the blanks in this sentence:
The Dark Room is on _______ between _______ and _______, but why are you going there? That place sucks now.

3) Sure you’ve been to the Tribeca Grand before, but do you remember the name of the Saturday night party that, until recently, called the basement home?

4) You’ve seen David Cross and [enter favorite Stroke here] at a bar, but you didn’t make a big deal out of it, right? After all, they’re just dudes hanging out.

5) In the past six months, have you been to two Fader-sponsored parties? (anybody can luck into one).

6) The ratio of free Sparks or Red Stripe that you’ve consumed to the number of Sparks or Red Stripe you’ve actually paid for is 2:1 or greater.

7) Do you know who Gavin McInnes, Michael T and Todd P are? (Give yourself 1 point for each.)

8) Have you been in a photo, even in the background of a photo, published on The Cobrasnake or Last Night’s Party?

9) Do you know the name of the doorman at Misshapes and Motherfucker?

10) Do you know any of the details about why Death From Above had to change their name to Death From Above 1979?

11) Do you know what Cornerstone is?

12) Have you ever received anything for free — anything at all — from Cornerstone?

13) Do you work for Cornerstone?

14) Can you identify the fake UK buzz band in this group: Arctic Monkeys, Tiny Riot, Test-Icicles, Art Brut?

15) Do you know the procedure for gaining entry into the Alife Rivington Club and Nom de Guerre?

16) Famed graffiti artist Neckface designed T-shirts for a Williamsburg tattoo parlor that’s in the back of an art gallery on Berry and North 9th. Can you name the tattoo parlor?

17) During the summer season that somewhat recently concluded, guys: did you wear a T-shirt with a blazer? Girls: did you wear a pair of
cowboy boots that you had bought before July?

18) Did you DJ at a party/bar/club in 2005?

19) While having a conversation with someone in a bar, has the topic ever turned to how much you both hate Ultragrrrl, even though you both agreed on “how nice she is in person?”

20) Rejoice, the used clothing/record store now located in Williamsburg, was chased out of the Lower East Side because of surging rents. Do you know what LES street it used to be located on?

21) During CMJ three months ago, did you attend two separate parties DJ’d by Steve Aoki … in the same day?

22) Do the following letters mean anything to you: LVHRD?

23) Were you invited to the Subways show at the Northsix tonight by +1?

Results key:

0-4 points: You are a Normal Person. You can probably enjoy a solid hour of Top-40 radio without once considering slashing your wrists. You can talk to your mom about movies you both enjoy. You love hanging out with co-workers, especially when it’s something fun like Happy Hour in Murray Hill. You don’t think there’s anything wrong with living in Queens. You are mentally at peace at all times.

5-9 points: You are Culturally Aware. You understand what “indie rock” is, and you can walk by the Angelika or Sunshine and recognize some of the titles playing, but you always say “Oh! I want to see that!” and never do. You think the OC mix CDs are a great way to discover new bands. You’ve started blowing off some get-togethers with friends for the occasional show at Webster Hall and Irving Plaza. Still, though, you’re not quite sure why it’s cool to like LCD Soundsystem but bad to like The Bravery. You’re walking a fine line right now, and you could go either way.

10-14 points: You are a Hipster. You seek out the latest and greatest music, and you might have a blog. You go to shows at Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom and Northsix several times a month, and most of your friends are hipsters, too. You have little in common with most co-workers or fellow students. You’ve gazed longingly at the Misshapes photo gallery and considered it — maybe you’ve even gone once or twice — but guest lists and Happy Ending after-parties are still a foreign concept, even though you’d love to be a part of it. You’ve stopped hanging out above 14th Street.

15-19 points: You are a Self-Loathing Hipster. You may not have “the look,” but it’s time to come out of the closet as a hipster. You’ve resisted this before, and you probably hate hipsters more than a little bit, but in the back of your mind you know it’s true. You’re already over M.I.A., the Go! Team and Maximo Park. You always know where to go. You’ll go to hipster’d out venues such as Supreme Trading or the Delancey to have a good laugh, but you also can’t dream of hanging out on a Friday or Saturday night at a place that doesn’t play cool music. Special DJ sets and parties at Hiro and Tribeca Grand bore you, but for some reason you’ll always find yourself there. It’s a love-hate thing. You’ve written about your complaints with the scene on your blog.

20-24 points: You are an Unabashed Hipster. Odds are you can’t even concentrate on this because the Bloc Party remix CD is playing through your Mac so loud. And you’re proud of it! You work in music/media/art/fashion/promotion, but the day job doesn’t stop you from going out 4-5 nights a week. You won’t touch it unless it’s an open bar. Either you’re a DJ or you’re in a band. Several of your shirts have no sleeves. For the most part, you’ve stopped eating.

25 points: You are the Hipster Messiah. Generations of hipsters have sung your praises and awaited your arrival so that you could show them precisely how it should be done. You are an immortal. Everybody in the scene has not only heard of you, but would probably recognize you even though they have never met you. Then they would softly whisper to a friend, “That’s such-and-such.” You aren’t even invited to anything because it’s just a given that you know about it and you’ll be there. You work with bands and artists, but only the ones you feel like taking on. You’re not a DJ, per se, but sometimes they’ll ask you to play your favorite records just for shits and giggles. You own more than one headband. When Maureen Callahan needs a quote for a Post article, she calls you. You consider “Bronques” a close friend. You should kill yourself.

stolen from here

no wave videos tonight

anyone want to join me?

Friday, December 9 at 9 PM
No Wave Video Night
Special Screening
721 Broadway, 8th Floor Animation Area
(take the North elevators on the right as you enter)

"I define No Wave as an (anti-)aesthetic demarcation and not
necessarily an idiomatic one—that is to say that I think No Wave had
(or has) more to do with a nihilistic, but sometimes totally sardonic
outlook than a certain cliched guitar sound or drumbeat, as many
would have you think. Simply put, the term could be utilized to
define any negatively charged music destroying or disemboweling the
tradition of Rock music and its platitudes through intentional noise,
abstraction or atavism." - Weasel Walter

Weasel Walter, of the Flying Luttenbachers, XBXRX, and Lake of
Dracula infamy, will present a night of rare No Wave videos from his
exclusive collection. Featuring live performances by The Contortions,
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, DNA, Suicide, and other downtown
luminaries, this selection offers a revealing glimpse into the short-
lived but highly influential genre Brian Eno documented on his
seminal compilation No New York.

Work to be screened (interspersed with live commentary):

The Contortions - Live NYC, 1978, 10 min
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks - Live at Max's Kansas City, NYC, 1978,
10 min
The Contortions - Live NYC, early 1979, 4 min
The Contortions - Live at Max's Kansas City, NYC, fall 1979, 5 min
DNA - Live NYC, circa 1981, 10 min
DNA - In the Studio, Location Unknown, 6 min
Friction - video clip, 1979, 4 min
Von Lmo - Live at Max's Kansas City, NYC, circa 1979, 5 min
Lounge Lizards - Live NYC, circa 1979, 4 min
8 Eyed Spy - Live at Mabuhay Gardens, SF, spring 1980 10 min
Bush Tetras - In the Studio, circa 1980, 4 min
Suicide - Live NYC, circa 1980, 6 min
Raybeats - Live clip with synched music, circa 1981, 3 min

Total Running Time: 81 min
