I have some friends who are bloggers, writers, readers, etc - just members of the online community.

It's raising awareness of the situation in the Horn of Africa... and at home, frankly. We know there's a famine going on over there. But did you know here one, stateside, one in five children is poor/in poverty? Tragic.

We're raising money for Save the Children - which is nice because it's an international organization and has offices in a number of countries.

However, if you are unable to, or don't wish to donate, you can help out by commenting as well! If you simply leave a comment, others will donate. We have some people saying if we hit a certain number of comments they'll donate money. Others are offering $5, or $10, etc, for every 100 comments.

I'd really appreciate it if you'd go and leave a comment. You could help save a life!

Amazon Fail

So I know a number of us don't really care about the same things- but I think this is something most/all my flist can get on.

Either because you're pro GLBT, or pro free speech in the form of yes, even fiction, or you don't think it's right for amazon to limit this category.

What happened? Amazon has removed a number of books, specifically anything *amazon* deems to be "adult" material, from searches and rankings. You can find them when you search only in "books" - but not the main page. I in fact, watched an author's book disappear in front of my eyes while I searched. Granted, what the biggest issue is the removal of sales rankings.

Or you can download the toolbar, and randomly when you do searches, you'll get points. Let me highlight the word RANDOMLY. No, you won't get points for every search. Yes, a number of people have asked me.

No for serious, I do. I'm back to let you know it's reading week soon.
This semester has been nuts. Not like last one where I lost the front of the car and people got shot and died.
This one was just me being a full time law student and working 3 jobs. That's right, bitches, count 'em. Three.

Also - I'm back with a money thing. No- really, it's good. FDIC insured - and check out who started the company. It's scary. I've had mine for months now, and no problems - and believe me, I've been monitoring my credit score. LIKE A HAWK.

No, really. Maybe it was reading boonies's post - but I'm envious of the squee, so I'm making some of my own.

I recently discovered an author - an amazing author. Nalini Singh. With my usual unquenchable curiosity, I had to go find out more about her. Lo and behold, she has a blog. It also so happens that she's running a contest. And we all know how much everyone loves free things. Especially extremely poor law students who are book worms, considering. I would prefer books over food, but biologically that doesn't really work. As it is, I can't afford food anyway.

Contest! (That's Mine to Possess) Comes out soon, and I am very eager. Ms. Singh is the first author I've read in a long time whose books I read page by page. Some of her books also made me tear up. Her stories are just so well written, and the depth of emotion is impressive. Even more because its not over done and maudlin or ridiculous.

So I actually discovered this post a long time ago, but it took me this long to make a decision.
You all know I'm an avid romance reader - and my favorite romance hero is... well, one of three Susan Elizabeth Philips heroes. But if I really, really had to choose one, it would be Bobby Tom Denton. He's the hero in Heaven, Texas one of the best heroes ever. He's a golden boy, everyone's darling, but not a jerk. He gets women in droves - and why wouldn't he? He's a star pro football player, and he's hot. He's charming, funny, everyone's friend, and a closet philanthropist. But at the same time, he's flawed. He's shallow (hard to realize what women really look like when he's got the football groupies), and doesn't make emotional ties. At least not with the opposite sex. He's also a little wild -and at the point where the story begins, he has no career. A bad hit ruined his knee, so he's about to star in a major motion picture. Which, he actually has the talent to do. But Bobby Tom still needs to find a purpose for his life. For someone who has had it all, even though the world is still his playground, he's less certain of his place. I could gush on, but oh, you just have to read the book. And I love the ending. Love. It. - He breaks out of jail to go after the woman he loves. (And ok, its a small town with most of the police force on his side. Still.)

Bobby Tom Denton. Be mine. :) Or your younger unattached brother/clone. I'm not picky They shoot you for doing that.

Warning: Minor ranting ahead

First of all, does anyone speak another language? Or understand one? Does it bother you when a book is set in whichever country that may be, and the dialogue, the vocabulary is simply all wrong? Does that happen?

But, there is something I want to get off my chest/rant about. (For those of you who don't know, I'm Asian American.)

I was clicking through author's sites and book excepts as I am wont to do, and encountered - a horror. I found an author who had Asian - Chinese, specifically "themed" books. Set in ancient China. I thought "oh wow- that's interesting." Not something you see every day, but really, a wellspring of fictional wealth. After all, there are thousands and thousands of years of history and culture. Believe me, I know. Sort of. I know there were multiple times I was supposed to learn the dynasties. (This is not the bad part.)

But this author was using "Chinese." Having her characters "speak" it. And of course, they had "Chinese" names too. Notice all the quotations. I'm so irritated. So much of it was so very wrong and so very outrageous. She had characters saying things they never would have said "in real life." A princess just would not speak that way. Or, characters speaking in a way no person ever would. There was a lot of gratuitous "Chinese" thrown in as well.

I will admit, you'll have that with any language. In fact I just read a short story set in France with a lot of clunky out of place French thrown in. They were pretty much the only thing that reminded you the story took place in France. - Does this annoy anyone else?

I think my problem was the author didn't really seem to know what s/he was talking about. At all. As if s/he hadn't bothered to even crack open a children's picture book on Chinese culture. And, the author was white. Hold on. Let me explain. You know the unspoken rule, how only you can make fun of your sibling/family/hometown/school/workplace - but others can't? Well, I'm feeling a little bit of that here. I don't like the superficiality of being "trendy" with no depth.

FYI sushi is not raw fish. Yes, sushi oftentimes does include raw fish, but sushi itself, does not mean raw fish. Please, do not say, "Sushi? Ew -I could never eat raw fish." Actually, I don't like sushi. (It's ok - it's a Japanese food Wink) My problem with sushi is that the rice is vinegared. In my opinion, that's a waste of rice (because too often it's done badly.)

What I'm trying to say is, I'd like an author to look a little deeper, and think a little more. Especially if they're going to be distributing what they write. People are going to read it, and yes. Some of them are going to believe it. Television is a great example.Another FYI - You don't get Mirandized as soon as you're arrested. So if you're ever validly arrested and not immediately Mirandized - your rights most likely have not been violated. Sorry.

Please, be realistic. Not all Asian guys are either kung fu masters or geeky nerds. Or gay. Or a combination. Not all Asian women are dominatrix bitches, or kung fu masters, or subservient and docile. We don't have "supah sekrit sex tricks" - well, no more or less than any other ancient culture. You don't get to wipe away history and culture and life by throwing in a lot of "duibuqi." ("I'm sorry" -don't even get me started on pinyin.)

The names were also bad. I've noticed if an author has an Asian character, oftentimes they have no problem just throwing out some random "Chinese sounding" name. Tong, Ping, and Lee, all those are popular. Lee is a last name. As is Lin, Chang, or W(o/a)ng. You don't meet Asian people named "Lin" because that'd be silly. It'd be like having a character named "Smith Smith" or "Brown Brown." The majority of Chinese names are actually quite similar to ancient Roman names. That's the best comparison I can draw. You have a praenomen, nomen, and cognomen. Names also aren't given by how they sound - they're chosen by meaning.

It's really complicated, right? But, really - it's pretty basic at the same time. I mean, it's a name. If you can't get that right, and your entire book is based in China, in ancient China, we're looking at a lot of problems.

Believe it or not, I'm really tolerant of this. I get a lot of "konnichiwa," "ahnyeonghaseyo" (sorry - I'm 99.9% certain the phonetics of that are wrong), and "ni hao" being called at me when I walk around down town. (Thank you, American's Next Top Model.) That's hello in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. (All Asians are the same, right?) Sometimes, I'll get "xie xie" too (oh, how I hate pinyin) - which doesn't even make sense, as that means "thank you." It's difficult to pronounce, I'll give you that. But once, in middle school my church was doing a cultural thing - and partnering with another church. My friends and I wore qipao - those horrible beautiful and restrictive dresses - and served food. One man said "shi shi ni" to me, and I stared at him dumbfounded. I heard him turn to his wife and say, "Oh - she doesn't speak Chinese." I fumed. I was also shocked. Had I not been so young, and if it weren't at church on a Sunday, I might have said, "Excuse me sir - did you just tell me to p*ss myself?" Because that's what he did, really. (And honestly - did he think I just didn't speak any language?)

I've had a myriad of similar experiences. But, for some reason, reading those excerpts just really got my goat. Thoughts?

As some of you know... I read romance novels. I call them brain candy. Like eye candy - just a little more thoughtful.
Most of my friends hate the romance genre. In fact, most of them [all of them?] have never read it. I don't count Nicholas Sparks. Well, I've never read anything he's written, but all these girls squealing about "The Notebook" (the movie - a lot of my friends refuse to read) and the fact that the actor was young Hercules and... well I makes me want to gag myself with a blunt wooden object. (A romance snob? Can it be?)
But yes, it can. I am.

However, all of this has a point. I would like to share with you... a contest where you can win romance novels/books! Yes, this is blatant promotion. And, I love free things. I do what I can to get it, being a ridiculously poor law student. (In fact, I think I read romance novels b/c undergrad with PolSci and Chinese, and now with all these Criminal Law classes I'm taking... I need to read books that guarantee me a happy ending with great relationships and perfect guys. Seriously.)

So I discovered my normal bank stinks. Money transfers are a sneaky underhand way to get money. But I guess they all do it.

I'm currently cranky, [my dad had me translate this letter for him... only he needs to realize I don't know Chinese, especially not missionary Chinese, especially not when I'm tired, and its my birthday, and I'm cranky, and I should be doing stuff I like not feeling like I'm being punished...]

BUT YAY. Today should be good. I hope.
I hope I haven't looked forward to it too much.

My dad also told me to mow the lawn tomorrow. I feel a little bad, but that won't be happening. It hate doing it, and also, I'm horribly allergic to it. No way will I go all blotchy and sniffly and gross to meet my friends. And I'm working the next day.
Oh yeah. I got a job. They called less than 1.5 hrs after my interview. Even though they said they were still interviewing people and would call in the next few days.
