For the past 15 years, I have been using photography as a tool for a wide range of projects centered on cultural infrastructures and the built world. These endeavors involved careful planning, were often years in the making, and had precise conceptual and technical parameters. Many images from these undertakings found their way into books, journals, and exhibitions.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Alongside this work I have always ‘just’ been taking photographs. Sometimes images were made to test the viability of a potential project, sometimes they acted as visual mnemonics but, perhaps most frequently, I simply liked what was in front of me. Ambiguity and chance naturally excluded these spontaneous images from those other exacting and thematic projects.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Occasionally, some of these anomalous images found their way to my Instagram account, but I’m tired of the dopamine jags, the endless ‘dead see scrolling’, and the unsolicited content on that platform. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
So, I started a photo-based newsletter using Substack. It's called The Received Image, . &#60;br /&#62;
Here's how it works:&#60;br /&#62;

Once you sign up (it's free and you can cancel anytime, anonymously) a few images mined from my archive will be emailed to you on an occassional basis. No grand theme or pronouncements, simply images which I think you might like to find in your inbox — an appropriate gesture given the language of early photography. For, as Kaja Silverman has noted, before the 1880’s, the verb most commonly used to describe the act of making a photographic image was not to take, but to receive.&#60;br /&#62;

		<description>Le Phare, 16mm transferred to DCP/ProRes, 13:20 mins, 2012&#60;img src="https://payload150.cargocollective.com/1/10/345801/5308070/fdl_o.jpg" alt="fr" /&#62;Unlike the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building, Montreal's iconic urban landmark is horizontal and spectral, not vertical and solid. Le phare is a filmic portrait of this nocturnal marker, a spinning beacon that has been raking four long beams of light across the city's environs since 1972. The nightly presence of the beacon's intense, rotating rays is reassuring for many, and yet also oddly perplexing: the illuminating machine does not providereconnoitering for aviation; it is not synced to act as a time-keeping device; nor does it commemorate a specific historic moment or personage. Indeed, the lights have no practical function or particular memorializing role whatsoever. The beacon serves only as an evanescent, immaterial monument to itself. Peu après l’invention de la photographie, au 19e siècle, certains exploitaient déjà ses mystères techniques. Au moyen de la double exposition et autres techniques utilisées en chambre noire, les photographes portraitistes créaient l’illusion que le ou la défunte accompagnait leurs sujets.  À la fin d’une répétition ou à la tombée du rideau après une représentation théâtrale, le régisseur exécute un dernier rituel avant la fermeture des portes : le positionne- ment de la sentinelle sur scène. La raison pratique derrière ce geste est d’assurer la sécurité de quiconque a besoin d’accéder à la scène dans une salle qui serait autrement plongée dans l’obscurité. La sentinelle délimite le pourtour de la scène, évitant les chutes dans la fosse d’orchestre ou dans la salle vide. La tradition veut que la sentinelle soit allumée pour tenir compagnie, pendant la nuit, aux fantômes qui hantent le théâtre. Il semblerait que, quand toutes les lumières sont éteintes, les fantômes se pensent abandonnés et qu’ils créent alors des difficultés sur scène.&#60;br /&#62;

My Among Clouds course was run at die Angewandte /University of Applied Arts in Vienna this month. The class concluded with a two day visit to Sonnblick in the Austrian alps, the highest, permanently staffed climate observation station in Europe.&#60;br /&#62;

The first image, by the French painter Pierre-Antoine Demachy (1723 -1807), depicts one of the earliest known renditions of a mock-up. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Built for the Parisian église Ste-Geneviève in 1764, the mock-up consisted of canvas erected over a wooden structure — foreshadowing Mies van der Rohe's mock-up (image 2) for the Kröller-Müller house museum (ca. 1912). Like Mies, Demachy also painted the actual canvas which formed the surface of the mock-up, though the painter had an advantage over the architect. Demachy was commissioned to complete this painting, a commemoration of the laying of the corner stone for the church, and by extension, of his own mock-up. Mies had be be content with some (not very good) photographs as documentation.&#60;br /&#62;

When a performance or a rehearsal ends, a stage manager engages in one final ritual before a theatre can shut down for the night: the illumination of the ghost light. &#60;br /&#62;
A bare lightbulb, affixed to a simple stand, delineates the treacherous stage edge from an otherwise dark theatre. According to superstition, this act also prevents mischievous behaviour on the part of any resident phantoms. In the time of coronavirus, the role of the ghost light was recast. More than a pragmatic safety measure, or a paranormal prophylactic, the ghost light came to as a symbol of resistance.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
To make these images, I spent the better part of a day alone in 17 of Montreal’s shuttered theatres between April and November of 2020.  Nothing but my phone playing songs on repeat, rows of empty seats, and a single low-wattage bulb on a stand kept me company.  It was a humbling and destabilizing experience. Things that at first had the impression of being far away, moved closer. Indistinct shapes gained definition. And, after a while, even the absent audiences, cast, and crew acquired something akin to a presence. </description>
