006: Romeo and Juliet, HP and HSM.

Hee, I need to post this before I forget, but it's definitely my favorite post, yet! I've been dying to make icons out of the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet ever since I saw it in class and fell in love with it. I loved it much, much more than the newer one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, anyway. ~~And not just because Romeo totally looks like Zac Efron.~~ ;D (And mucho props to peaceinyou for the link to the caps.)

005: Border Tutorial

Tutorial time, finally! This was requested so sorry for the long wait.

This was the original icon:

And I'll be attempting to re-create it in Adobe Photoshop 7. :)

COLORING:
(Now this isn't really a coloring tutorial, but I'm just including it. Feel free to skip down to the border part. A real coloring tutorial will be up soon.)

1. I started out with this cap from dj43 at dj_capslock. After sharpening and re-sizing (this is a great guide) I end up with this. (I usually work with the big picture and re-size after.)

2. Duplicate the base, and set that layer to Screen.
3. Create a new layer and fill it with #7196B5. Set it to Soft Light, I used 100%.
4. New layer, fill it with #FFF699. Set it to Multiply and lower the opacity. (I used 73%.)
5. New layer, fill it with #77DBFF. Set it to Color Burn, and I used 100%.
6. I wanted the blue shirt to pop, so I went to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Play around with the settings, this is a great tutorial.

(If you really wanted to know, this is what I changed in the Cyans.) And this was my layers palette in the end.

Merged visible, cropped and this was the end result:

BORDER:

Next, I sharpened and re-sized it down to 70x70. Feel free to re-size it to whatever you want, though. Make sure that the image is on a layer, not a background. The next step will not work as such if you have flattened the image. (If you did flatten the image, just duplicate it, and delete the background.)

Go to Image > Canvas Size, and change the drop down menus from percent to pixels. I made it into 80x80, so each side would have a 5 px border.

I created a new layer, and filled it with #FFFFFF. (I used #F5F5F5 in the original, though, hee.) I dragged the layer below the image, so it becomes the border. Layer > Merge visible.

Now, we need to duplicate this image, so under the History window should be three buttons. Click on the first button to make a duplicate of your current image. (Where ?)

Awesome! Well, go back to the original image and leave that duplicate alone for a bit. Select all, and then go to Layer > Layer Style > Stroke. Make sure to change Position from Outside to Inside, and then feel free to play around with the settings, ie: stroke size, color, etc. These were mine.

So, we have two images, one with a border and one without a border. Still follow? :)

Now, create a new file, 100x100. I flood filled it with #E6E6E6, but feel free to use any other color/texture/pattern.

Take the image WITHOUT the border and paste it onto the new canvas. After, take the image WITH the border and paste it. It should look something like:

Now, take a Soft default round brush, I used 13 px. You can lower the opacity, and erase bits of the border. Try different effects:

Next, I added some flower brushes (here) in different colors. I used the Burn tool (Where?), on Shadows to create some darker colors. (*Tip: If the brush you choose is too heavy by itself, go back with another flower brush, this time as an Eraser, and erase some bits!

Well, merge visible, and you're done! Hope this helps at least one person. :)

-S2 layouts do NOT use overrides. They are customized on the customize page.
-First, save the CSS document on Notepad, making sure you label it as a CSS file- make your file name something like: whatyouwanttocallit.css
-See here?-Upload the CSS document somewhere on the web, such as geocities or filehut.
-Make sure you have uploaded the images yourself. Do not hotlink. You will find the places to put the urls for the background in the very beginning of the code and the header images at the very end of it. It isn't that hard to find.
-Once you have hosted it the file, on the Customize page, (making sure you are using the S2 system) go to Step 1: Layout and select Flexible Squares. Press change.
-You can choose any theme you like. Click change.
-Then hit Edit Customizations. Under the Presentation option, (which is the default option, anyways) scroll all the way to the bottom and check the box under Use Linked Style Sheet. Then, check External stylesheet URL. Now there is a space where you can paste the URL of where your CSS Stylesheet is hosted. Save and view your journal.
-You can customize the layout even further, by fiddling with other options on the Edit Customizations page, such as showing user pictures, adding text to the sidebar, and etc. Modify your links list to add links to your sidebar. Got all that? *laugh*

Other: For this layout, there wasn't meant to be a sidebar. So, on the edit sustomizations page, under Sidebar, make sure you say NO to the "Show the sidebar?" bit. I mean, you COULD have a sidebar, it just looks really weird. :D
