Introducing: The Imperfect Designer
Navigating creativity and self-care

Hello there!
I’m Blair Fraser, and I’m thrilled, and mildly anxious to finally start something that’s been brewing for a while—The Imperfect Designer, a publication where we explore what it really means to live and work creatively while staying true to ourselves.
You see, after over 13 years in the design world, I've realized something important: perfection is overrated. In fact, it can be downright harmful. I’m a product designer, a workshop facilitator, a problem solver. But, like many of you, I’m not perfect. I’ve battled self-doubt, wrestled with perfectionism, and struggled to find balance between the demands of a creative career, family life, and personal well-being. It’s tough!
I’m just an everyday designer—someone who loves to create, but who also has a full life outside of work. I’m here to remind you that it’s okay to be imperfect, that struggling with self-doubt, uncertainty, and any other challenging thoughts is quite normal, and that we can all do better together when we embrace this shared humanity.
Why am I doing this?
Because I believe there’s a deep need for more honesty and vulnerability in the creative world. We’re constantly expected to hustle, to produce flawless work, and to be at the top of our game 24/7. But that doesn’t leave room for failure, for the messy parts of life that shape us into the people and professionals we are. The truth is, most of us don’t fit into the polished, curated version of the design world that’s so often portrayed. And that’s okay.
I want to create a space where real conversations happen—where we explore the highs and lows of creative work, where mental health is prioritized, and where it’s safe to be imperfect. Whether you’re a designer, an artist, or a crative of any kind, this is for you. It’s not about how to design better, but about how to be better, how to navigate the messy parts of life while pursuing our creative aspirations.
What will you find here?
Honest stories and insights from my own journey of navigating burnout, imposter syndrome, and the constant balancing act between work and life.
Practical tips on how to maintain mental health, deal with creative blocks, and embrace imperfection in both your work and personal life.
Interviews with creatives who share their experiences and advice.
Conversations around real struggles—whether it’s dealing with perfectionism, battling self-doubt, or finding the courage to take creative risks.
Workshops and resources to help both individuals and teams build creative confidence, set boundaries, and find their way back to balance.
This isn’t just another productivity-driven design blog or a “how-to” guide. It’s a space to reflect, recharge, and grow together. To challenge the 1% culture that dominates the design industry and open up conversations about what it really takes to build a fulfilling, sustainable creative career for you.
Why should you follow along?
If you’ve ever felt like you’re not measuring up to the top 1% of designers, if you’re overwhelmed by the constant pressure to be perfect, or if you’re simply looking for a place to be real—then I invite you to join me on this journey. This space is about creating a community where we can share struggles, relate to one another, and find ideas to help each other grow.
I want you to feel like you’re not alone in this. And more than that, I want you to feel empowered to take care of yourself while you pursue your creative work.
So, if you're tired of trying to live up to unrealistic expectations (possibly set by yourself), or if you’re looking for a supportive community of creatives who get it—The Imperfect Designer is for you.
