Film Info:

I've been trying to find film for cheap. Specially Polaroid 600 so far the cheapest in-store is Wal-Mart at $15. But packs of Polaroid 600 are cheaper on Amazon.com. Wal-mart also sells 110 film around $1.25 - $2.00 (Yes I still own 110 film cameras). But to get your 110 film processed it has to be sent out, and pretty soon so will 35mm. I imagine a lot of photo processing places are turning into digital processing places specially those in pharmacy and grocery stores. And some specialty film processing stores are going out of business. While a lot of us still like to use film whether all the time or some of the time we are loosing the basics of film. Like rotary negatives film is slowly going out of style. If people promoted to this generation's teens who like taking myspace shots with Polaroids while wearing big sunglasses and owl necklaces the history of film would be preserved. Yes we can get some of the same looks of film with photoshop but it's hardly ever the same and some people either make you pay or won't give up their secrets to how they got their digital photos to look like 35mm. We must preserve the production, usage, and development film and film cameras. Please don't give up on film.

Yes, I did it again and changed my username. I'm now dictionarian.

I know I haven't posted any graphics recently. My DSL modem went out a while back and I've been focusing a lot on getting my GED. But hopefully before Wednesday I'll make a post.

There will be some over haul done, mostly adding new stuff.
I will be posting a Photography Help post. It's already written and on solonbixler but putting it here is best for easier access to lj users and myself.
It features how to(s) and places to buy film as well as official sites of camera makers.

There will be more resources added. I've actually created some of my own textures, but it's mainly large scans, I will get around to making different sizes and putting them in zips. They will be added to imfraudulent's DeviantArt account. There are already a couple textures added so go check them out. :)

The tutorial list is pretty big, maybe too big to load properly for some dial-up users. I'm thinking maybe making separate posts for Easy, Medium, Hard, and Misc(textures, animation, ect...) will make it easier. However if anyone has some suggestions on this or anything else featured in this post please feel free to comment.

Hopefully I can bring the icons and other resources out of the clutter it's in before I head back to school on Wednesday.

♪ Selective Coloring

9 steps and 3 examples.

The first step is standard, if you read my previous tut you can skip the first part.

Step 1: Make your base.
Open your image. I used a picture of Quinne from her "" set from Suicide Girls. I copied the image and pasted it in a 100x100 pixel 72 dpi new document. I then shrunk it, clicking the chain button;; to keep the image constrained as I used the boxes;; that appear in the corner of the image to shrink/warp it. Then when I got what I want, I clicked the check mark;;. I duplicated the image once and sharpened (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen) it. **I changed the opacity to 40%-60% and merged the duplicate to the image so it would not be over sharpened. Now you got a base.

Step 2: Duplicate Base
Set to: Screen
Opacity: 50%
This layer is brighten the base up. If your base is already bright enough it would be best to skip this step. If your base is extra dark you might need to keep the opacity at 100% and maybe even duplicate the screen layer again and change the opacity to get what you want.

Step 3: Color Fill
Fill: #eee0cc
Set to: Soft Light
Opacity: 100%
Create a new layer and fill it with a light yellow color (eee0cc.)
This layer brightens and helps with the manipulation of colors in selective coloring.

Step 4: Selective Color 1
The yellow blends in with the base's colors. So with selective coloring we change the blended colors to make them more red with reds and more blue with cyans/blues. We also remove a little bit of the yellow.
Settings:

Step 5: Selective Color 2
This Selective Color layer deepens the reds and bluse and removes a little more yellow.
Settings:

Step 6: Hue/Saturation
This is just to bump up the colors.
Settings: Master; Saturation: +20

OPTIONAL:

Step 7: New layer
Create a new layer either by the button at the bottom of the Layers pallet or by going to the menu "Layer > New > Layer." You can also use the key shortcut "Shift + Ctrl + N"
In the new layer hold down "Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E keys and then let go. It will basically copy-merge the layers below the new layer.
You can copy merge in a new layer with the menu: you have to "Ctrl + A" or menu "Select > All." Then go to "Edit > Copy Merged" then paste ("Ctrl + V" or "Edit > Paste") in new layer.
Either way you go, this copy-merge layer will be used to create the blur around the edges.

Step 8: Blured/Spun Edges
Filter: Radial Blur
Menu Location: Filter > Blur > Radial Blur
Amount: 10
Blur Method: Spin
Quality: Good
Leave the little graft alone, keep it center. Though you can mess with the position of the spin it looks less wonky if left centered.
There's really nothing much to say when it comes to this. It's an effect, something that should be learned, specially since it's good use at making textures and it can add to the icon. But be careful because it can also take away from the icon.

Step 9: Erasing Center
Brush: 100px Soft
On the Radial Blur layer erase the center and in areas you want revealed. I just wanted a little blur so most of the layer got erased.

Finished!
Other Examples:

Any brush or textures you want to add go ahead. It's all you. ;) You will have to be careful with them, choose colors that won't clash with image, change opacities, and layer modes. Just experiment, don't always be set on one single layer mode.

**ADDITIONAL NOTES:
1. You don't have to duplicate your base and click 'sharpen' and change the opacity of the base so what sharpening there is isn't too much/over done. On Photoshop CS2, you just click sharpen then go to Edit > Fade or Shift + Ctrl + F and then just move the slider to get the right amount of sharpening you want. Be careful of over sharpening, it's the leader in crummy icons next to over usage of selective coloring, color layers, and textures... in the same icon. :3

2. Step 8 used to be step 3. After the screen layer I created a new layer then copy merged. I left it alone and then worked on coloring. When I was done with coloring and went on the the Radial Blur step by going back to the copy merged layer and applying that effect. Then I erased. So if you download the PSD you will see how the radial blur layer is below the coloring.

Step 1: Make your base.
Open your image. I used a picture of Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie that I had found here. I copied the image and pasted it in a 100x100 pixel 72 dpi new document. I then resized it, clicking the chain button;; to keep the image constrained as I used the boxes;; that appear in the corner of the image to resize it. Then when I got what I want, I clicked the check mark;;. I duplicated the image once and sharpened (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen) it. **I changed the opacity to 40%-60% and merged the duplicate to the image so it would not be over sharpened. Now you got a base.

Step 2: Color Fill
Fill: #390c15
Set to: Exclusion
Opacity: 100%
This layer creates the bluish tint to lighter colors that is so popular amongst icons today. It also creates a brownish to purplish tint to darker colors. It was a good way to get rid of the original cross-processing color that the original image had. The fill layer gives me a clean slate to build upon.

Step 3: Curves
The curves layer is used to brighten and give contrast to the image. As well as changing the colors a bit. I didn't want too much blue or too much purple/brown. So I messed with the colors a bit using curves. The RGB for contrast, darken the dark areas with the bottom left dot, brightened the bright areas with center dot, you get the picture it's under the settings.
Red; the center dot was to cut down on the red, which makes purple and brown. The bottom left dot was to darken the red in darker areas. Later I found that the bottom left dot in 'Red' adds green/takes away from the red.
Green; the center dot was to also get rid of some red so it was moved up a smudge. The bottom left dot was to darken the green which makes a red/purple color in those shadowy areas. I know we just tried getting rid of that in the 'red' why add it in the green. At the time I didn't know but without taking away from the 'red' and using the green to add red back we wouldn't have a good depth where Chris's chin and guitar meet.
Blue; the center dot adds blue; it keeps the bottom left dot making the image look all yellow. Another reason to cut down on them reds a better red to blue ratio, as we all know red + blue = purple.
The bottom left dot makes more yellow in it's setting on blue. I could go without it and get a better looking cross-processing effect, but I didn't want that. I wanted some, some-what natural color. So moving the slider to the left I got darker and more yellow in my image.

You may have to adjust each dot for your image. Sometimes the darker colors of the images may end up black with these settings. You still want to see that the darker colors have a brown or purple tint to them just not as much as with a bare exclusion layer.
Note: The way I work I only click once in the middle of the line then input numbers to change its placement. I then I move the bottom left dot to the right, which darkens colors and creates contrast. So the second numbers are the bottom left dot.

Step 4: Selective Color
Used to heighten the colors in the image mostly the reds and yellows and the blue tint. You might have to change the settings on each slider to your image. In 'Reds' what red I added I wanted some yellow in it, so when I took away yellow in 'Yellows' I wouldn't take a lot away. The taking away of yellows makes a pinkish color which is close to purple thus keeping the purple constant. What little green there is in the image I wanted to keep by using 'Green' in selective coloring. If your image has green it might end up looking bright and ugly so if you do have green you might want to change these sliders. 'Cyans' and 'Blues,' you might want to ignore unless you got a lot of blue in your icon. By default I try and enhance what little blue is in all of my bases using 'Blues' and 'Cyans.' To add a little pink to Chris's lips I messed with Magentas, I admit it's kind of girlie but I think it works for him. I had washed away a lot of the blue tint, which is what I was going for at first but I realized it would look a little better if I added some blue tint using 'Whites.' This is something you can easily go overboard with is the whites. It's nice to remove some red from the face using it and adding a little more blue but be careful or an all blue image be your fate. Bumping the cyan up on 'Neutrals' is another good way to get rid of excess red. And the 'blacks' to darken Chris's shoulder just a tiny bit. Other wise it's a good way to darken shadows and dark colors as well.

Note On Nude Icon Subjects
A userpic contains graphic nudity, sexual, violent, or otherwise objectionable content cannot be placed as a default icon. If it is a default icon you will be asked to replace it with a different icon that does not contain objectionable content.

So in other words you may use nudie icons but it cannont be your defualt icon.

Post 8 icons you made a long, long time ago.
Remake the 8 icons using the same picture ~~and the same text~~ as you used in the old icon.
Post the 8 remade icons next to the old ones

I didn't use the same text in a few because it just didn't work well with text.

Tutorial: Do more for Black and Whites

+ Blending options for text.
+ Curves but there's additional notes on how to get same effect without curves. :D
It's pretty easy but the blending options or drop shadow you're going to have to look into for your program if using a different program.

This tutorial is mostly made of textures. Wanting to use color textures over a black and white base image is my ultimate goal of the icon and this tutorial.
The first step is standard, if you read my previous tut you can skip the first part.

Step 1: Make your base.
Open your image. I used a color picture of Amy Winehouse that I had found here. I copied the image and pasted it in a 100x100 pixel 72 dpi new document. I then resized it, clicking the chain button;; to keep the image constrained as I used the boxes;; that appear in the corner of the image to resize it. Then when I got what I want, I clicked the check mark;;. I duplicated the image three times and merged it because when you resize instead of crop you get faded edges. **I duplicated the image only once this time and sharpended (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen) it. I changed the opacity possibly to 40% and merged the duplicate to the image. Now you got the base.

Step 2: Color Fill
Fill: #000000
Set to: Color
Opacity: 100%
This is to turn the image black and white. You can go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate to get the same effect but I'm not used to actually looking for it in the menu bar so I use a layer.

Step 3: Curves
1 Click; input: 128 output: 135
Bottom left corner dot: input: 25 output: 0

Here's what it looks like if your confused: CURVES

According to your base you will want to adjust the settings. It's really to add contrast, and darken things a bit.
To get the same effect without curves try Brightness/Contrast with contrast set at +13. It's almost the same, there might be a slight variable. Your light colors tend to end up a bit more lighter, if they are too bright, put the brightness setting in the -/minus range.

Step 4: Texture 1
By: iiokua
Set to: Screen
Opacity: 100%
Open texture and go Select > All or Ctrl + a, and then go to Edit > Copy or Ctrl + c. Go to your icon your working on and go Edit > Paste or Ctrl + v. It should appear as a new layer above the layer you had last selected.
There's really not much to change and add about this other than it's a light texture and depending on the texture itself or where it's covering will the opacity be changed. And even then there's really no limit to the texture. You can rotate to fit your image and it doesn't have to be like the one by iiokua. It can be those little gold/brown lights. Just mess around and experiment. I don't want you guys to make this icon exactly, just use it as a reference.

Step 5: Texture 2 -> Texture 2 Blured
By: colorfilter
Set: Overlay
Opacity: 100%
Like before copy texture and paste it in the icon file.
You can get creative with gradients or other textures but I wanted to experiment so I opened a texture and pasted it in my icon file, then went Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, setting the blur at 2.7 I think, and then clicked okay. You can change the blur settings to blur a little or a lot, depending on what you want and the textures... texture. O.o

Step 6: Color Fill
Fill: #666666
Set: Softlight
Opacity: 100%
The last texture made it a bit bright and I didn't want to set the fill to color burn because then it would be too dark. So I set it at softlight making the blacks a little darker. Opacity and even it's use will depend on how bright or dim the texture will be.

Step 7: Texture 3
By: hxcfairy/fangirl_loves
Set: Screen
Opacity: 100%
Just like any texture before, copy from the original and past into the icon file.
This was just added to give a little "POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!" and I need more color to cover the bottom portion because it was looking quite empty. Also, it is an excuse for using a texture made by my dear friend and affiliate hxcfairy. I'm her fangirl. :3

Step 8: Text
Font: Farewell
Size: 12px
I typed "back to black" all lowercase. Uppercase can get in the way and make things look a little gaudy/cheap. I then clicked on one of the boxes;; that appear at the corner of the text. Much like when we made the base. Then used the rotate field that appeared on the transform bar to type in how far I wanted to rotate the text counter-clockwise, which was -17.1. I clicked the check mark;; to OK it.
Then in my layers menu I right clicked my text layer and in the menu that pops up I choose blending options. When the blending options pop-up choose drop shawdow.
For some reason I changed the drop shadow's color setting from multiply to color burn I don't remeber why, but you could probably get away with either one.
Opacity: 75% (Or same)
Distance: 2
Spread: 20
Size: 3
Everything else stays as it was. Unless there are something that are different from how I got it here's the screenshot of the settings just in case.

Finished!

Any brush or texture you want to add go ahead. It's all you. ;) You will have to be careful with them, choose colors that won't clash with image, change opacities, and layer modes. Just experiment, don't always be set on one single layer mode, go through them all.

**ADDITIONAL NOTES:
1. You don't have to duplicate your base and click 'sharpen' and change the opacity of the base so the sharpen isn't too much. On Photoshop CS2, you just click sharpen then go to Edit > Fade or Shift + Ctrl + F and then just move the slider to get the right amount of sharpening you want. Be careful of over sharpening, it's the leader in crummy icons next to over usage of selective coloring, color layers, and textures... in the same icon. :3
