Plans to build two blocks of flats on former tennis courts in Bexleyheath are recommended for approval eight months after a decision was initially delayed.

Bexley Council's planning committee have been recommended to grant proposals for 12 new homes next to Old Manor Way, Barnehurst, arranged across two blocks.

Half of the flats are proposed to be one-bedroom, and the other half two bedroom, with a new vehicular access also planned from Old Manor Way.

The site, at the back of 1-37 Parkside, was formerly occupied by tennis courts and currently only has pedestrian access.

A total of 60 residents objected to the application following its submission in September 2022, with many raising concerns about this proposed access road due to its location "near a blind bend under a narrow railway bridge".

Residents feared extra traffic from the development would "worsen the risk of collisions" and make the pavements "unusable and unsafe".

As a result of these concerns, the planning committee did not approve the development when it was first brought before them in October last year - going against the recommendation by planning officers - and instead deferred the application.

The same recommendation has been made ahead of a planning committee meeting on Thursday (June 11), following a change to the site layout to "improve vehicle manoeuvrability".

But Bexleyheath & Crayford MP Daniel Francis said "key concerns [are] continuing to be raised" by residents around highway safety, building height and emergency access.

He has written to the chief executive of Bexley Council, Paul Thorogood, asking him to include previous comments about these concerns in the committee report, as eight of the 11 committee members are newly elected and therefore "won’t have seen the concerns I raised last October".

The planning committee are expected to make a decision on June 11 at 7pm.
