1. I'm off until after the new year and while I'm not burned out I definitely need this because Feb-May is...going to be intense from a work perspective

2. 2018 was awful so I'm declaring 2019 the Year of Idyll and Idyll's!Husband

3. Speaking of #2, I have an app in for a job that would literally double my salary; it closes tonight so send good vibes my way

4. I have a short story that I'm going to shop around in the Spring, and I've put out feelers to people about who has connections to publishers or who has good information on how to shop things around; if you can help me out feel free to comment or message me

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
well damn

it's been a lot longer than i realized since i've been 'round this way!

husband finally moved out here in August with two of our critters. we had to rehome two others, unfortunately, because we could not find a rental that would take four animals. as it is, finding a place that would take a 50lb sheppard/rottie mix was...difficult.

i flew back to pittsburgh and drove back across country with husband and critters and it sucked. we couldn't leave the critters alone so we pushed it and did the drive in 3.5 days. it was really kind of miserable but we didn't die during it (a fear i had going into the process) so yay.

i spent all of 2015 in a department where i had no leadership (AKA Boss) and was basically the last manager standing after a series of unfortunate reorgs, and my workload was out of control and required a lot of 65 hour weeks. but i acquitted myself well and lots of kudos came my way. like, no joke, TWO people in my college (NOT EVEN in my dept) went to my exec vp for the express purpose of singing my praises. and high level folks at a government funder legit put an item on the agenda of a recent site visit to talk about me being amazing. !!!

because of all of this, the vague talk of a promotional opportunity is pretty much a guarantee, backed by my upper leadership, and omg that would mean a $17K increase woohoo.

right before holiday break, we hired staff to fill all but one open position. not gonna lie, i'm glad to have a boss again, and a manager to take on a major project i didn't have capacity for. i mean i'm still supporting a project we need to hire for but work is like 80% better.

i've met with port commissioners and gone to meetings with mayors, been invited to a convening by a major metro transit org, and testified before a state senate committee. i feel accomplished in my career path, and like an actual ADULT.

husband is still looking for work so things aren't entirely ideal but even with only one of us working we're still better off financially than we were in pittsburgh.

in 2015 i traveled for work to...san francisco, dallas, portland, baltimore, and san diego (x2),

i also went to ft lauderdale 3 times. i hate ft lauderdale, fyi. the last trip (a few weeks ago) coincided with my 40th birthday and it was actually the only BAD trip i've had since i started this job. 15 hours of sleep in 5 days, missed flights, painful meetings, terrible hotel, and the loss of my tablet on a plane. FYI, American Airlines' lost and found SUCKS ASS. i'm never seeing that tablet again, ugh.

in the last year my previous employer, which was...hrm. i had problems with the org and the leadership, let's just leave it at that. anyway, they've upheld their tradition of being terrible and complete assholes by firing people for no cause. so glad to be away. i mean, my job is 1000% harder and more stressful, but i'll take this over racist, classist and hypocritical bullshit any day.

i started classes again to keep on working towards my degree. signed up for 4 this semester (completely on line) and last night had the sad realization that 4 is too many for me to manage. will probably be dropping 1. still! keeping on the path to completion though!

to sum up...husband and critters are here, work is going excellently, and life is good!

seems like it's time for my semi-regular lj pop in!

it's been 10 months since i moved and things in cali continue to be great, especially now that i've adjusted to my new workload and have imposed limitations on myself that i've effectively expressed to, and had accepted by, upper management (who is my temp direct manager because we're down a director).

i had a really rough patch for a month where i just...was a mental/emotional mess and super lonely and just exhausted constantly. but those limitations helped, and visiting my family a few times helped. i also battled some breathing issues for a week but several breathing treatments, two inhalers, a nose spray, an allergy med, and steroids helped--apparently March thru May is a DEATHLY ALLERGY SEASON FOR ME HERE ugh.

i've been writing and knitting listening to music on infinite replay while i sleep.

i've also been missing husband BUT i will get to see him next week because i have a work trip (a conference, at which i'm presenting) out to Baltimore and he's going to drive out for a few days yay!

so, yeah, happy greatness for the most part, though i turn into a hot mess when i live on my own, i can't even. i'm a terrible adult when by myself ugh.

Since we’re so close to starting, there are a few
housekeeping details I wanted to go over.

Comm Essays

If you’ve signed up to provide an official comm essay, please note
that they’re due to me by January 15! (If you need an extension, no
worries, just let me know via email). If you’re interested in writing an official comm essay, there are still a bunch up for grabs over here.

Blog Contributions (Non Fanworks)

One of the goals of 14 Valentines is to share information and
resources on women’s issues. The comm essays mentioned above are the
lead ins for the daily topics. 14 Valentines has always generated
topical content outside of the official comm posts, as well, though.

For those who want their topical content included in the comm
activity, you simply need to link us to your content on the daily comm post. If your content is on Tumblr, you can skip the linking step simply by tagging your relevent post with 14Valentines. I
track the tag and will include—either through reblogs or link round
up—all 14 Valentines non-fanworks content.

Fanwork Contributions

A major aspect of 14 Valentines has always been fanwork creation to
promote the community and generate interest. Last year, we changed comm
requirements so that all contributions, including fanworks, be
female-centric in some manner. We’ve had some really amazing creators
contribute some wonderful fanworks over the years, and we hope that will
continue.

To better facilitate linking and archiving fanworks contributions,
I’ve created a collection on AO3 for 14 Valentines. This includes a
general 14 Valentines parent collection, and a specific subcollection for the 2013 cycle.

Fanworks posted to the 14 Valentines 2013 cycle subcollection will be
linked to on daily round up posts. This content can include anything
you wish to create that falls within the posting guidelines of AO3.

Fanwork creators who don’t have an AO3 account, or don’t wish to post
to the collection, can leave a link to their fanwork at the LiveJournal comm as a comment to the daily topic post.

Other Contributions

If you have a contribution to make that falls outside of essays or
fanworks, that’s fine! Tag them with 14Valentines on tumblr, or
provide a link in a comment at the LJ comm as a comment to the daily
post.

Links

About 14 Valentines | Comm FAQ | Ask

I will reply to confirm your claim, and ask you to provide me with your email address. You can provide it to me in a comment, via a message, or email it to me at tonguesandtales@gmail.com

Day 1 – Women and Body Image
Day 2 – Women's Physical and Mental Health
Day 3 – Women and Reproductive Rights and Motherhood
Day 4 – Women and Sexual Assault
Day 5 – Women and Domestic/Partner Violence
Day 6 – Women and Political Action
Day 7 – Women and Athletics
<strike>Day 8 – Women and Work/Employment</strike>
Day 9 – Women of Color
Day 10 – Women and Economics/Poverty
Day 11 – Women and Media
Day 12 – GLBTQ Women
Day 13 – Women and War/Peace
Day 14 – Women and Education

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to writing community essays for daily topics.

First and foremost, while we have dedicated topics related to GLBTQ Women, and Women of Color, that does not, and should not, exclude inclusion or discussion of GLBTQ women or WOC on any other day. This is significant because the experiences of WOCs and women in the GLBTQ communities can differ greatly from those of white cis straight women.

Secondly, we do not have a dedicated International topic because each topic (and each women's issue) has an international component inherent within it—that is, the scope of women's issues varies and is different depending on geography/location. Those who want to write community essays on any topic are welcome and encouraged to focus on the issue from a global perspective, or even to examine the issue in relation to a specific country.

Finally, the daily topics are broad. Please don't feel that you have to take a broad approach when contributing an essay. If you'd like to focus on a particular aspect of a topic, or focus on the experiences of a certain group of women in relation to the topic, you are welcome to.

I know a bunch of you are getting into/have gotten into Teen Wolf, but aren't on Tumblr (or don't follow me on Tumblr, whatevs), but here are some fic recs I've posted there:

Recs Part 1

Recs Part 2

Also, not mentioned there (because they're super popular and most people in the fandom have read them) but amazing are To Have Outlived the Night by Stillane, and Open the Door by Renay, both on AO3.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth. It was super fun to do!

This scene! It brings up a lot of BAMF!Stiles comments, which is interesting, because I didn't intend it to be. The goal was for it to showcase competent!Stiles, who's learned a lot over the years in order to compensate for the fact that he's not a werewolf but was in charge of them. I mean, there's a lot of talk in the fic about him being in charge in Boston, and I wanted to show the end result of all of that.

Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the Alpha smirk. Ah. So it's going to be like this, then. [Werewolves and their dominance games. The Alpha could call her wolf off, probably should, but she's not doing so because she wants Stiles to prove himself. In my headcanon for this 'verse, Stiles has come across this a lot. Werewolves are assholes. That last part isn't my headcanon, it's canon.]
Stiles whips his left arm from the sofa back and flexes his wrist. A short, sharpened hunk of ashwood flies out from under his cuff, from a spring loaded launcher designed by Allison, and heads right towards Joseph.[Admission 1: I mental blocked mountain ash for some reason. I didn't realize it until I was doing the read-through in prep for posting the next part. So I left it. And used ashwood again for continuity's sake later on. Admission 2: I totes stole that wrist thing from Angel the Series. What. It's practical and Allison could make them; she's awesome like that.]

Danny doesn't need to look back to know to duck, which he does gracefully. [← this line is a little clumsier than I'd like. Really, I wanted to show that they've got synergy, that they've done this before, and I ended up having to come out and say that he knew to duck. Every other way I tried to phrase it didn't really convey that Danny was doing it deliberately and made it seem like a lucky thing that he ducked, or that Stiles threw it after he ducked.] Joseph roars again, using his sleeved covered forearm to knock the projectile off target. He staggers back immediately after, hands going to his face to paw at his eyes, which are streaming from the diluted aconite solution Stiles slipped out of his right cuff and flung at him. [Booyah! Stiles did the old one-two maneuver there. You gotta be on top of shit when it comes to werewolves because they are fast. Stiles knows this, so he actually throws the aconite only a second or so after launching the projectile. I didn't go into specifics here, but I mention a liquid-filled plastic packet later in relation to neutralizing the aconite; that's basically the same set up he used to deliver it. I leave it up to the reader to decide if he threw it hard enough/the plastic is thin enough to erupt on contact, or if Stiles punctured it a bit with a nail prior to throwing it. I do that a lot in this fic, letting readers fill in details that aren't really all that important and would clutter up the narrative to include (that's a fancy way of saying handwaaaaaaaave.)]

Stiles says Danny's name, and with a quick pounce, Danny takes Joseph to the floor, [Yeah, I think I managed the synergy better here.] pinning him on his back, one hand set firmly on his forehead to keep his head down, and the other holding his wrists pressed to the floor over his head. He's got a leg thrown over the tops of Joseph's thighs to keep him from kicking up.

Stiles stands up slowly and walks over to them, cracking his neck along the way. [I have A LOT of headcanon for this verse. Metric tons of it, actually. The neck cracking thing? Stiles got that from Derek. It started as a deliberate affectation back in the day, something of Derek's he adopted when he was a human in charge of wolves, dealing with other wolves, and having to come up with ways to display dominance and confidence. After a while, it became second nature to Stiles, something that comes out when he goes into that mindset of dominant!human. It's actually going to show up again in the last chapter.] He plants one foot against Joseph's throat and then crouches down. Joseph twists and growls, feet scrabbling against the floor, jaws snapping at the air. Danny's containing most of Joseph's movements, so Stiles doesn't have to struggle to keep his balance in the awkward position.[More headcanon—early on in Boston, something bad happens. I'm not sure what because the what is not important. The important part is that Stiles calls Derek and word vomits the situation and is freaking the fuck out, having no idea what to do. And Derek says, “They need to see you as dominant enough to be in charge of Danny and Lydia; to deserve to be negotiated with on equal footing.” Which leads Stiles to ranting about how he isn't strong enough to pin a werewolf to the floor and make it call him daddy. But Derek, who has learned to both werewolf and alpha averagely at this point (he's at a solid C), tells him he doesn't have to pin the werewolf; as long as the werewolf gets pinned and it's because of Stiles, it counts. Or something to that effect and way less obvious—this is headcanon not fleshed out fic writey stuff. So Stiles sits down and figures out a way to get a werewolf pinned and be responsible for it, while also showing that he's in charge. Then him, Lydia and Danny practice it over and over, and put it into effect.

This is the time honed and smooth version (the less smooth version included Stiles getting bucked off, which is why Danny makes sure to contain the movements now, hahaha), and despite the fact that the heavy lifting is done by Danny, it puts Stiles firmly in control: earlier, Stiles tells Danny not to shift, and Danny immediately listens; Stiles is the one to instruct Danny to take Joseph down to the floor; Danny pins Joseph, not in a way to assert his own dominance over Joseph, but in a way that leaves Stiles free to do so.]
Looking down at Joseph, Stiles pulls his lips back from his teeth and snarls as best he can in Joseph's face, unblinking and hard-eyed. Joseph growls back at him, so Stiles leans more and more of his weight on his right foot, the one on Joseph's throat, until Joseph eventually can't get enough air to make a sound. [Right. I figure there still needs to be some physical domination going on, and this is how Stiles does it. Joseph pinned by Danny, but it's Stiles' foot on his throat; it's Stiles cutting off his air; it's Stiles who is staring him down. Also, I like the idea of Stiles mimicking wolf behavior by way of snarls and teeth baring. He's speaking their language to make his point.] Still, Joseph meets his eyes for a another minute or so, until he realizes that neither Stiles nor Danny have any intention of moving. Stiles watches the panic seep into his gaze and knows that, if he had a wolf's sense of smell, he'd be able to smell the acrid stench of fear wafting off of Joseph. [I wrote this well before Stiles' therapy monologue about breathing/drowning, so this doesn't reference that. But, there is a bit of parallel rationale going on. I don't care if it'll kill you or not (or even if it's your kink), having your air cut off is frightening on a primitive, instinctual level. In the original S1 only verse headcanon, Sitles knows this mostly by way of his own panic attacks and witnessing Scott's asthma attacks. In my slightly adjusted headcanon that takes into account what S2 events actually fit within the schema of this fic, it can also relate back to the breathing/drowning monologue.]

But Stiles doesn't need werewolf abilities to notice Joseph's inevitable submission. It's textbook: he lowers his eyes and turns his head to bare his throat. [I don't think submission is always so blatant for werewolves because it doesn't have to be. Here, though, I wanted to show Joseph reacting very strongly to what's happening, to what Stiles is doing. I wanted him to give a significant demonstration of submission. I mean, he could have just stopped struggling and nodded or something. The reasons for the strong reaciton are twofold: one, to show that Stiles really knows what he's doing, and two, to hint at Joseph's relative lack of experience in situations like that. The Boulder pack, as mentioned later, is insular. It's hinted here that either Joseph or his sister are next in line as Alpha. He's at the top in his Pack, and so being dominated like this is probably a new and panic making scenario for him.] Stiles remains still for several long drawn out moments, then shifts his weight off of Joseph's throat in graduated increments.

[The next part, not included here, has Stiles neutralizing the aconite. Another deliberate act. He injures, he dominates, he accepts submission, and then he fixes the damage. Fixing the damage is important. He learned that from Derek, too, but only just before they all left Beacon Hills for college, because that's the first time Derek really learned to put it into practice (he was at a D+ then).]

No, really, I have so much headcanon for this 'verse it's not even funny.

x. Ugh. You guys. Teen Wolf has taken over my brain. WIP has 62K words posted, and I've apparently decided to create my own genre/kink and call it PG13 Touch Porn. Also, despite the fact that every time I try to purposefully write h/c I fail epically, I managed to unknowingly fill my WIP with it.

I don't know who I am anymore!

x. In RL news, I was quoted and mentioned in a news article about a work event. That means I'm famous.
x. I have yet to receive my fin aid award letter from my uni, so I have yet to register for classes. I am concerned by this delay. :\

x. My Teen Wolf WIP is at 48K words, and will probably finish out at 78K words.

x. We experimented with Crock Pot lasagna today and it was...not entirely successful. I mean, it's edible? But the top noodles are crunchy, the middle ones are bloated, and the cheese has disappeared.

x. Is there a list of fandom cliches anywhere?
Hi Hi

Hi! I've been on Tumblr a lot, and writing, and dealing with some sinus issues. I miss you, LJ/DW!

Let's see what's happened lately...

x. We had a housewarming party, and it was attended by family and friends whom we adore!

x. We went to a baseball game, and it was my first in Pittsburgh and it was awesome!

x. We hit up a food festival for noms, woohoo!

x. I got to meet one of Husband's man!crushes, the mayor of a local community, hah!

x. My fandom went off the rails on Thursday and I got to see it happen live in Tumblr!

x. We did more painting, which I still hate with a passion, but our living room looks slamming!

x. I got a mini-detail on my car, which needed it badly, and drip guards for the windows, yeah baby!

x. I developed a new and wonderful allergy to our standard laundry detergent; that kind of sucked. :(

x. OUR HOUSE DID NOT BURN DOWN! (the bar is forever set low, my friends)

x. Also, in a month I get Vi and Bunners time, live in person, booyah!

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
nightmares

Two nights ago I had a dream in which I was werewolf-soul-bonded to Justin Bieber.

...first of all, WTACTUALF?!?

Second of all, I was less concerned with the Justin Bieber aspect of it than I was with the fact that someone could read my thoughts/emotions. I actually had a nervous breakdown over this in the dream, and went to a therapist!!

My psyche, let me show you it. :(

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
Entertaining guests FTW!

x. We had our first barbecue in our house yesterday! Granted, there were only two guests, and one of them showed up 2.5 hours late (and the barbecue was FOR HIM), but I think it went well.

There were hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta salad, and BEER!

The best part? THE GUYS WENT HOME! Yes, they left! They did not crash out on my sofa after drinking until 3AM, then get up and cause a ruckus in the morning. They left. Reason 1,220 why we moved closer to everyone. \o/

Today is for writing, and putting away ALL of the clothes. And I mean that literally, hah. The great rewash is done and now I get to find homes for everything.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
finally friday

You guys, I have had a long, rough, hard week! (BUT! My house hasn't burned down, so it's all golden.) I am wrecked, and failed at napping. Me! Failing at napping! You might want to watch the rivers for blood, or whatever, because the apocalypse might be nigh.

However! The Great Laundry Project of 2012 is almost done. And! It is Friend L's birthday tomorrow, so we're having him and Friend M (and possibly Friend B) over for some barbecue & beer.

Of course, Friend M is getting his new house in order, so in all likelihood, most of us are probably going to be wrecked and fall sleep after two drinks out of sheer exhaustion. Still, I'm looking forward to it.

For tonight, however, the plan is to partake of relaxing refreshments and unwind.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
Forever and a day

x. Take it from me folks, never, ever decide to just wash every single item of clothing you own. It takes a LONG TIME. (We're doing it because we smoked in the condo, but aren't doing that here, and we don't want to put smokey clothes in our closets/dressers).

x. I have a work function starting at 7PM tonight, and then on Friday I have to spend a few hours wandering around a fair field (not for a fun fair) in 85+ plus temperatures for another work thing. Urgh, I say!

x. We're DONE with buying things for the house for the time being (with the exception of some paint). Whew. My threshold for spending is in the rearview mirror, and I had a minor freakout attempting to buy a coffee table, so I'm glad we've officially decided this. Hah.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
UGH ACK

x. Washer line situation not fixed. Husband and one of the Dads is down there now, so the house smells of solder. :/

One day, friends, one day I will get to use the washing machine I purchased, and the new dryer that won't set my house on fire. Perhaps.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
TWO WEEKS!

x. We have been in our house for 2 weeks!

x. It hasn't burned down!! *fist pump* (This will be my point of reference for all of forever.)

x. We are getting things set up and organized, though we are having issues with the knobs for the water pipe that connects to our washer. It will, hopefully, be sorted out this weekend, and will likely include soldering. Because, no joke, I got laughed at when I brought the super old knob to a faucet/plumbing store and asked if they had replacements for it. Snerk.

x. I watched bunnies frolic in the back yard today. It was epic.

x. Today is a grooming day. I have waxed, and my hair is currently coated in dye, and then it's facial time. Also, there will be leg shaving. Yay!

x. The cats have all settled and are very happy with the new abode. It's nice not to have to figure out where they're hiding.

x. We ordered a new bedframe but I am still mourning the old one, which is still in pieces in the garage.

x. I am very much looking forward to summer tv! Warehouse 13! Teen Wolf! Alphas!

x. Also! I somehow missed the news that Jim Parsons (Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory) came out. Good for him! :)

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
I've been posting my happy place Teen Wolf fic over at AO3 as a WIP. Nothing's gotten less complicated after all this time.

(alternate summary: the one where Stiles is a high school history teacher, Derek is an accidental avant garde metal working artist, Jackson is Mayor, Danny is an IT guru, Lydia is a mathematician, Allison is Sheriff, and Papa Stilinski is married to Chris Argent.)

Currently at ~28K posted words.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
recovering

x. I took a three hour long post-adrenaline rush nap earlier, once I was convinced the second dryer wouldn't spontaneously catch fire like the first.

x. My standards for daily life have now changed, as whenever Husband checks in with me (he had class, then a tentatively scheduled thing I told him to keep) to see how I'm doing, I'm all, "Well, I haven't DIAF \o/." Or, "The house hasn't burned down!"

x. I'm thinking of asking the appliance place for a stove, since we need a new one but were going to put it off for a bit because I've gone past my spending threshold--see the present day effects of my childhood of poverty in action, huzzah! Anyway, I DESERVE A STOVE FOR MY TRAUMA!!!

x. I actually have to do laundry tomorrow, but I'm making sure Husband is around and the extinguishers are close by. I will face the trauma, damn it!

x. Also: you're all amazing and I love you and thank you all for your comments and your gratitude that we're okay. It means a lot.

This entry was originally posted at Dreamwidth.
