Tutorial: yamimagic's Blending Tutorial, Part One!

Oh, god. Not another one, right? Well, boredom struck, and I simply couldn't contain myself. How shocking. Well, here goes nothing.

yamimagic's Blending Turtorial, Part One: The Bare Basics of Blend Modes

Blending modes kill (along with badly used alliteration). It's a known fact. Oh, the hours I've spent fussing with blend modes, experimenting to my heart's content, and then further, until I
can no longer take it. Experimentation is what my icon-making is primarily based on, but sometimes, that is not enough. And so, I bring you this. Keep in mind that as I write this, I am
learning as well, so kindly bear with me. Now, lets begin~!

You see that there? That's a base. Cleaned up, and prepped for icon-making~! Oh, the excitement! It's surging around me like a lightning storm! Or that might just be some very well
done CGI effects. Nevertheless, this will be the base I used to show the differences between blending styles. Get used to it. You'll be seeing a lot more of it. Also, in order to see what
some image shows, hover over the image with your mouse.

Now, there are many blend modes in use today, however, since I'm using a lowly version of Photoshop Elements 2.0, I will be sticking to the blend modes listed below. Apologies to
those working on other programs.

So, those are the ones I'll be displaying. Again, I apologize for those who are using different programs.

Now, when changing blend modes, there are certain things which must be kept in mind. Such things are where blend modes can be specified, and what color types.

Blend modes can be altered in two primary places: layers, and certain editing/painting tools.

When editing the blend modes of a layer, you set the mode in the layers palette or in the "new layer window". This specifies how colors on the active layer are seen when
combined with the layers beneath/behind it.

When using painting tools, such as the paintbrush or eraser, layer styles can be set alongside the type of brush used. However, some tools only use a portion of the blend
modes available. I am not very fond of specifying blend modes when painting, as it tends to make things all the more complicated.

The three different color types which must be considered are the blend color, the base color, and the result color. The base color is the color of the
pixel on the layer of a specific blend mode. The base color is the color beneath the layer affected by the blend mode. the result color is... Quite simply, the resulting
color.

For example:

When mixed together, the two layers come out as...

The red (#FF0000) is the base color, while the blue (#0000FF) is the blend color. The purple (#FF00FF) is the result color. Note how the hex color codes have been combined.

Fell back into an icon making kick when I started browsing for Harry Potter movie images. Mugglenet.com is my savior, in that aspect. The majority are really half-assed, and done in five-or-so minutes. Anyways...

Well, it's been a while, hasn't it? School's started, and I'm already kind of overwhelmed. I haven't had a lot of time to dedicate to the things I actually want to do. Icon-making is part of this list. However, as it's the weekend, and I had a few icons sitting on my computer, I figured it wouldn't hurt to post a few things. I'm not very happy with the majority of these, but at least it's something. I hope that once I settle into school a bit more, everything will follow, and I'll be able to get back into icon-making.

I have to stop making such small posts, and post all of my icons together. Meh. Messing with blend modes, and discovered that I really like the "color burn" option, among other things. Brushes credited in earlier post, and the images were sitting in one of my folders. If I've taken these from somewhere, I'm terribly sorry.

On another note, does anyone know how to take screen captures of dvds? I've tried to "print screen" on winDVD, interactual player, windows media player, etc. I've also tried virtual dub, but I couldn't figure out how to open the bloody file.

Mini tutorial: Making your own textures.

It summer vacation. It's early morning, and I had too much coffee for me to go back to sleep. Since I don't have anything else to do, I figured I might as well write a tutorial to keep my brain functioning. I apologize in advance for my terrible use to the English language before fully waking. :-)

I'm using Photoshop Elements to create this tutorial, but I'm fairly certain that it could be easily translated into other programs. All images are fairly large, but there are only three of them, and they have been linked to. It's my first tutorial, so please bear with me.

Making your own textures:

Personally, I try to avoid using brushes and textures made by other people. I believe creating my own textures allows myself to experiment more so than I would if I was given a certain texture. The following is a slight mini-tutorial in which I explain some ways in which I create textures.

The first step involves gathering an image, or even set of images. Using either a digital camera, or even a camera phone, you can easily take pictures of objects which could become great textures. I would avoid using the "older" cameras which require film and development, as that could be time consuming and pricey, but that's just me.As I said earlier, it's all about experimentation.

Another possibility involves searching online via search engines such as google, or yahoo for images. Any image will do, but many images are under copyrights of some sort.

Anyways, I tend to take pictures with my camera phone. As shown here, I have taken a picture of my own hand holding whatever was available: my watch. I like the effect managed by shaking the camera slightly, so I decided to stick with that.

After that, I enlarge the image. How much you enlarge the image depends on whatever you intend to use the texture for. Typically, I save images around 500 px by 500 px, so that I can crop them whenever I need to, but if you plan to use these for wallpapers or layouts, you most likely will need a large image. Keep in mind, if you will only need a small 100 x 100 texture, you can still crop the image, as I will show later.

I had enlarged the image from it's original size of 640 x 480 to 1280 x 960.

For the third step, I decided to add a rather severe motion blur to the image. The direction does not matter, so long as you remain consistent. I choose to keep things horizontal. here is a look at what I currently have (resized at 50% because it was way too big to post).

Next, you can choose what to do next. I suggest reading over the remainder of the tutorial before continuing. (Come now, some reading never killed anyone... ~___^)

If making a light texture, I adjust the contrast at this point. You may choose how much contrast you wish to add. Here is an example. Play around. From there, you can adjust the coloring, and saturation, but I will not go into depth on that subject. Perhaps another day.

If you do not like the idea of a light texture, you can play around on your own, or you can choose to keep the texture as is, and crop it. If you feel creative, you can even create your own brushes using textures, but I have yet to fully grasp that concept myself.

I typically try to save images with larger dimensions, as it lets me adjust them depending on my needs, but it is not necessary.

As I have said numerous times, everything is about your own experimentation. Go wild!
