tutorial as requested by dointhepanic

to make the icon below...

so this tutorial is kind of a spin off of the bright colors tutorial except i used red & pink instead of red & blue gradients.

this is done on PS7.

i started with this lovely base of billie joe armstrong of green day.

i then made a gradient with the gradient tool with the radial gradient option. i used the colors #FFC1D7 & #FF5959

it makes this gradient. (i used the radial gradient because with the red being in the center, the brighter color could focus on his face more)

i duplicate the layer, put both gradient layers above the base layer. i set the middle layer (the first gradient layer) to lighten & set the third layer (the second gradient layer) to soft light.

& it looks like this.

i then duplicate the base layer, drag it above all the other layers, desaturate, & set it to soft light. then i go to filter>sharpen>sharpen. sharpen it twice.

the next thing i did was a little different than in the tutorial by catatonic1242. while i was playing around with this icon, i decided to use the gradient that they used in their icon to have a little hint of blue.

i did all the same steps up to this one only with the red & blue gradient instead. i then copy merge (shift + control + c) & paste the image onto a new layer.

i duplicate that layer & set the first one i pasted to overlay & the second to multiply.

then i create a new layer & use a brush by teh_indy in #EB9393. set to soft light.

then i added another brush by teh_indy.

except, obviously, in the icon it is white. & set to overlay.

then i added the text. the smaller text which says "ANOTHER LESSON LEARNED AND" in Minion size 6.5 in white. i put a fitted shape of color in C82C3C & set to soft light behind the text to make it more readable. the other word says "failed" in Magic Bus One size 36 in black with a white drop shadow & the whole text layer set to overlay.

& that's it!

it took a little experienting to get it right but textures & brushes & blending modes make all the difference!
