Coloring techniques learned from this tutorial.

First off, start with your base. Mine is of Olivia Wilde, Alex, from The OC.

Duplicate the base layer then saturate the image by going to Colors >> Adjust >> Hue/Saturation/Lightness, or Shift + H. Set saturation to -100. Your image should now be black and white. Press ok.

After that, darken your image. Go to Colors >> Adjust >> Brightness/Contrast or Shift + B. Set brightness to -63 and contrast to 17. Press ok. You should now have something like this:

Set the blend mode to screen. Now:

Next you'll want a new layer for a blue exclusion. I used this blue:

#1B1C4B

And set the layer blend mode to exclusion. Duplicate that layer. My image now looks like this:

Alright, now, duplicate your base layer again and drag it to the top of the palette. Saturate the image again (Shift + H) and set -100 once again. This time, when you darken the image (Shift + B) set brightness to 23 and contrast to 17. Press ok. This is what I have:

Set that layer blend mode to soft light so the image looks similar to:

The image was too washed out for what I wanted so this is what I did: Duplicated the base layer again and dragged it to the top, set the layer blend mode to soft light.

Still not what I wanted, I wanted the colors to stand out a little more in her hair and lips so to fix this I: Duplicated the base layer and dragged it to the top, then saturated it (Shift + H) to -20. Getting this:

When that blend mode was set to soft light it looked like this:

Your palette should now look like this:

Alright, now the fun part ;) Using this gradient:

I made a new layer and set it to multiply. So now my Alex icon looks like this:

Now I wanted text but, because of the lines on the background of the photo, the text wasn't readable. So, I made a new layer to make a small white background for the text. Using the line tool (Draw), width set at 12pt, I made a small square from the side of the icon to a little over her hair, where I wanted the text to go. I set that layer to soft light and ended up with this:

Now for text. Text is usually something more preferential but I'll go through how I made the text I chose. I made a new layer. Using the eyedropper tool, I picked a dark color from the background: #252434. Then, with the text tool, I used the font Franklin Gothic Demi at 10pt and in all capitals typed ALEX. Make sure you have "Floating" marked and "antialias" checked under 'create as.' I pressed ok and moved the text over the white box until I liked the position. I set the layer to multiply and got this:

And finally, a border! I used this border on a new layer:

I don't know who made it but if you do please tell me so I can credit! I set the blend mode to multiply and my final result:

Tada! You're done. I save as Portable Network Graphics (AKA .png) because I find it's the closest to the original and most places support the file type. No one likes an accidentally pixel-y icon.

Alright that's it, please comment and tell me how this tutorial worked out, or to show me the icons you made with it (I love that) or any suggestions (constructive criticism please).
