So we're going to be finding out how to make this icon: Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This tutorial is for psp8 but i'm sure it's translatable for photoshop users.

[1] I started off with this image of MKA

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

I decided i wanted to use ashley in the icon So i cropped Ashleys face and resized the image to 100x100.

This is what i have now:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

[2] I'm going to sharpen up ashleys face a bit ... adjust/sharpness/unsharp mask and apply these settings ... 'radius 1.00/strength 26/clipping 0.'

[3] Now in a new window open up this Image Hosted by ImageShack.us wonderful template that was made by disappearicons.

[4] Copy and Paste your Ashley picture as a new layer over the template. Now set the Ashley layer to darken with 100% opacity. Now duplicate your 'darkened' layer and set the duplicate to soft light with 100% opacity.

Layers should look like this:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

as a result of that we have:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

[5] Time for a exclusion layer ... create a new raster layer above the ashley layers and flood fill it with #001756 Image Hosted by ImageShack.us. Set this layer to exclusion and 100% opacity.

this gives:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

we're nearly done now.

[6] I Dedcided i wanted the text 'Ashley' (how original!) on it. So create a new vector layer and write your text. I used the font 'georgia' size 5, in caps, bold and a space between each letter. The font color was #0A1856.

[7] I chose to place the text here but it was hard to make out the e and y.

[8] so i created a new layer above this. Opened up my select tool Image Hosted by ImageShack.us and selected a rectangle around the word. Then i flood filled it with #813B5E. You can't see the word anymore so lift your layer with the text on above the layer with the flood filled rectangle.

[9] I set the rectangle to 'lighten' and 100% opacity.

the layers are looking like this now:
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

and the icon: Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

[10] It's up to you if you want a border. I did. So using my select tool again i selected my border and flood filled it with #813B5E.

Final result = Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
