Problems with Curves

My Photoshop has officially became a pain in the butt! Every time I try to use curves in icons, all it does is turn them gray, I went about 2 days not even able to open it up and then it started to work again, but I get this problem every time I try to use curves. Do any of you know how to fix it, or is it just on the wrong setting ??
