Icon tutorial two: Love Like Winter
i'm back with my second tut: vintage colour
going from:
→
or
made in Photoshop CS2; involves selective colouring and channel mixer.
IMPORTANT: this only works well with dark, desaturated images. if your base is too light and too saturated, your end result will come out too harsh and nothing like a "vintage" effect. i had this same problem with one of my alternate result icon and had to give up and find a new image to icon.
Step 1;
Take your base and crop and sharpen to your liking, then duplicate the layer [Layer > Duplicate Layer] and set it to Soft Light. Duplicate and set to screen. (You can alter this step to fit your base if this setting is too weird or hard on the image.)
Step 2;
Open a Selective Colour layer [Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Colour] and apply these settings:
Whites: +100, -100, 0, 0

Step 3;
Open a new Fill Layer [Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Colour] and fill with #A36868 at Darken, 50% opacity.

Step 4;
Selective colour again:
Red: -100, 10, 100, 0
Yellow: -100, -35, 100, 0
White: 20, 20, 20, 0
Neutral: 20, -3, 3, -10
Black: 0, 0, 0, 10

Step 5;
Selective colour again:
Red: -35, 0, -100, 0
Yellow: -100, 0, 100, 0
Cyan: 100, 0, -100, 0
Blue: 100, 0, -100, 0
Neutral: 10, -5, -10, -10
Black: 0, 0, 0, 10

Step 6;
Open a Channel Mixer layer Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Channel Mixer]:
Red: 100, 0, -4
Blue: 0, -3, 106

Step 7;
One last Selective Colour layer:
Neutral: 0, 0, 0, -10
Black: 0, 0, 0, 3

and that's it.
For some added spice, I added this circle texture (taken from here) and set it to Screen at 80% opacity (only 80% because this is such a soft toned icon, you see):

makes sense, yes?
I highly recommend playing with your settings, especially any magenta selective colour setting. You'll get a better result that way, I promise.
I love to see results by the way! ; w;
