Tutorial 07: Yuuko

Requested by 2baki.

How to go from to in Photoshop. Uses Selective Coloring, so probably not translatable.

1. You know the deal, prepare your base. Btw, I usually don't do anything to the image except cropping when I start, the sharpening always happens along the process. xD
However, for my icon I used this pretty Yuuko image. This tut works best when you have some blue and white in your image.

2. Let's start with an exclusion layer since I love them! Make a new layer and fill it with #3B3838 on Exclusion, 45%. It brightens up the dark areas quite a bit.

3. I adore gray layers way too much. <3 But you always lose contrast, so fix it with a Soft Light, 100% duplicate of your base.

4. We should bring out the colors more, so make a Hue/Saturation... adj. layer with these settings:

Master: 0 25 0
Reds: -2 6 0
Yellows: 0 5 0

5. Basically, this image consists of blue and white, so I wanted to make the blue lighter and add a greenish touch to let the water more look like... water. xD Open a new Selective Color... adj. layer and put in these settings:

Reds: -100 100 55 100
Yellows: 0 -20 8 0
Whites: 10 -8 0 9
Neutrals: 53 -10 4 -37

Change the opacity to 70% for this and duplicate this Selective Color layer (keep the opacity at 70%):

6. And that's it for the coloring! Now we can play with textures. Take this light texture by gravira on Lighten, 100% since Screen is too overwhelming. Rotate it as you like.

7. Light textures can do quite a deal for the effect, but not enough: take this texture by bambinainnero and set it to Multiply, 70%.

8. I love the underwater-feeling you get from this. :D But more shinies please, which you get easily with this one by bambinainnero again on Screen, 100%. I moved it a bit to the left and erased some parts:

9. Add some tiny text and you're done!

Questions? Just ask! :D

Be creative and experiment however you want, and I'd love to see your results! I'm curious what you come up with. :D

Please comment to this post since I'll most likely respond there, and you can still request tutorials for icons from this batch. :D
