unable to screen cap

Hi, I've read through the memories on screencapping and I also checked at cap_it, but I'm still unable to screen cap. It's possible that I just don't have the right software -- the computer is a Dell running Windows XP. The player I'm trying to use is PowerDVD (when I go to properties, it does not say any particular version -- would that be version zero, then? We got the computer in August of 2003, so what we have is whatever came with it). There is no camera icon on the little menu screen. I also don't have PSP or PS, so I have tried to paste the Printscreens into Word, Powerpoint and Paint to test them, but they're not working.

The weird thing is that when I do a Printscreen and paste that into Paint (and Word and ppt, I think), it's as if the Paint window is an empty picture frame -- that is, I can drag that window anywhere on my computer screen, and the captured image stays in the same place on the computer screen. If I close PowerDVD, the captured image goes black in Paint. It's as if it's just showing what's on the computer screen, not saving the bits as a file. Is that a problem with the computer (technology hates us) or the version of PowerDVD that we have?

Thanks in advance for the help.
