PSP7 - Somewhat flowery colours.

To this:

1. I cropped and resized this lovely picture of Liu Yi Fei to use as my icon base. No adjustments were done to it apart from one quick sharpening.

2. Deciding that there was too much space on the icon that wasn't needed, I used my rectangular selection tool and made a wide rectangle down one side. I then pressed down shift, and made another selection the same width horizontally. I pressed delete.

(The border's there to show this.)
3. I duplicated the base and desaturated it, setting the layer to screen at 70 opacity.

4. I duplicated the screen layer, setting it to soft light this time at 40 opacity. A subtle difference.

5. I made a layer below the screen layer, filling it with a dark blue (in this case, #002644.) I set the layer to difference. It gave off a reddish hue, and by the same logic, using a dark red would give off a blue hue.

6. Another raster layer, between the screen and soft light layers. This time, a dark green to white gradient layer set to overlay.

7. Oh yes, another layer, this time ABOVE the Soft Light layer. I used a gradient made by
crumblingwalls. This was set to exclusion at 20 opacity.

8. Just to give it some more 'oomph,' I added another gradient layer (still by
crumblingwalls) and set it to overlay.

9. I figured it was time to add some text, so it didn't look too plain. Using Times New Roman, size 4, kerning 400, I typed in 'xiao long nu' and positioned it. (This is on a new layer, by the way.)

10. Because it was looking a bit blue, I used yet another gradient to restore the warm tones. Hard Light, at 30 opacity.

11. Now, the once white bar-like-thing along the sides are now colourful. I don't like this, I've decided. So, using the magic wand tool, I selected the base layer on the layer palette and clicked once on the sidebar.
I went back to the top of the layer palette, and made a new layer. I chose a light pink from the image and filled in the selection with that.

12. To finish it off, I made a Channel Mixer layer with monochrome checked, and set it to Soft Light at full opacity.
Finito.
